Title: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 20 April, 2009, 07:38:50 pm
This is the topic where I'll talk about all of the anime/manga that I've recently read/seen. Of course, seeing as how it's me, this will mostly be about manga.

Firstly, I've just recently finished reading my way through all of the extant scanlations of Berserk. To put it simply, Berserk is the most GORY, ****ED UP, AND EPIC manga that I have read up to this moment. You think you've seen ****ed up worlds? You haven't read Berserk. You think you know characters who have bad **** happen to them? You haven't read Berserk. You think you've seen BFS's? You haven't read Berserk. You think that the combat in your favorite piece is gory and brutal? You haven't read Berserk. Not to mention, it has some of THE best manga artwork I have EVER SEEN. Worth. The. Time.

And, just today, I read the latest chapter of Kuroshi-tsuji. Black Butler to you non-weeaboos. Now, I've been following this manga for a while, and I rather like it. However, this last chapter has not only managed to confirm some of my deepest suspicions about the nature of Ciel's backstory, it's actually set up the reveal of the nature of his servants that I've been expecting for some time now. And it is AWESOME.

~Salty

My cousin is obsessed with Berserk. I plan on reading the manga and watching the anime sometime. Isn't it really deep?

I'll put it this way. The anime covers about....half of the manga. And the manga is more than 200 chapters long. Deep....I'll leave that judgment up to you. However, it's very much a mature manga.

And, now for something new. I just caught up on a manga that piqued my interest a while ago, by the name of Franken Fran. The basic premise is that of Fran Madaraki, who quite resembles Frankenstein's Monster. She is a medical doctor, dedicated to saving peoples lives and fufilling their wishes. However, while she values life, she doesn't exactly comprehend the whole "quality of life" thing. As such, her results can be....messy. Not for the weak of stomach.

*Punts Manic*

No, it doesn't.

...

AND now for something completely different.

I would like to introduce you to two new mangas for you to enjoy.

First up is Kekkaishi, a shounen manga about a boy from a clan of Kekkai (barrier) users, as well as his female counterpart, and their quest to protect Karasumori, their school/shrine. Jam-packed with good storytelling, interesting characters, and lots of fighting (it's suprising what they can do with barriers, I tell ya), not to mention an expansive backstory, this manga has run for over 250 chapters at last notice. And yes, it's a good shounen series.

And the other one is Zetman, a rather dark and gory Seinen manga. It follows the story of two children, Jin Kanzaki and Kouga Amagi, who just happen to be complete opposites, and their respective journeys to become heroes in their own way. Of course, since this is a Seinen manga, all does not go well. Filled with personal trauma, gratuitous death and dismemberment, and lectures about why you suck at the drop of the hat, there's barely enough room for the transforming artificial human fights. Oh, and did I mention that said transfoming creatures have an appetite for death and destruction? They do.

Yes, that is, in fact, the anime/manga I have been talking about. And as to what I was referring to before, about the nature of the Ciel's servants? Well, let me give you a little background before I give you the link that I have just recently acquired.

Now, the Phantomhive family (that would be Ciel) has five servants. One is the butler, Sebastian. He is not involved in this chapter, but he's VERY present in the rest of the manga, and he's already awesome.

As for the others:
  • There is Tanaka, a rather Japanese servant, who happens to be Ciel's former butler, and is now mostly seen sipping tea and laughing, for no explained reason.
  • There is Finni, a rather androgynous young boy who happens to be employed as a gardener, but, unfortunately, doesn't seem to know the first thing about gardening. He normally ends up killing all of the vegetation around him for one reason or another.
  • Then there is the maid, Mey Lin. She dresses in a rather stereotypical French maid outfit, and seems to be have very bad eyesight, for all that she wears thick glasses (Meganekko, yum!) Unfortunately for her chosen position, she's rather clumsy and usually ends up breaking everything.
  • And finally, there is Bard, the chef. Most chefs at least know how to cook. Not so, cries Bard. His exploits include an attempt to use a flamethrower to roast turkey. You can guess how that goes.

And then, there is this. http://www.onemanga.com/Kuroshitsuji/32/29/
Read on from that point until you run out, and you will see pure AWESOME.

More to come later.

Some of these actually sound really appealing. Especially that Berserk you're talking about.

I haven't viewed any anime or read any manga in a long time.. although I do have a lot more free time nowadays. Maybe it's time to start again.
Oh, they are, they are.

So I just finished watching Kaze no Stigma. A decent series, but not as good as I'd heard it was. Also, the pointlessly angsty tsundere was just annoying, no matter how she may be the main character.

Hm, I guess I should finish reading that...

Didn't look like it'd be anything mind-blowingly awesome, though.

My god, I've let this thing die. Guess I might as well post some new content. It's sure deserves at least that much.

So, I've recently been watching the English dub of Yumeria! Now, it's a typical harem anime, if a bit mixed with shounen, though that part's the least interesting part about it. The best part, at least in my own humble opinion, is how incredibly freakin' INSANE most of the main characters are, and how much lulz it brings to me. I swear, I laugh more watching 30 minutes in each episode than I usually do in a couple of days. Of course, I haven't finished it yet, but it's so good that I really don't want to.

Wait, what?

Also, Ushio and Tora. You should read it or watch the anime. It doesn't look very good, but it's at least rewarding to watch it for the sheer comedy of the main character's interactions.

And I don't even want to get started on JJBA...

There's a manga I read once called Ayu Mayu. >_>
It's about this guy whose parents recently died or something and then he finds a couple of girls and one of them is his sister. I can't remember the outcome though...

Art being bad isn't a problem for me... A lot of things I read don't look that great. So, I'll throw it into my list.

I find myself quite liking Luck Stealer. It's a pity that there are so few chapters out, but it seems that it's finally starting an arc.

On another note, I just finished reading Hollow Fields. It's a cutesy-type art style, very moe and such, but I quite liked the subject matter, short though it was. You'd like it, DB.

Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 15 January, 2010, 07:52:32 pm
Heh heh heh.

So, recently. This is probably going to be a bit long, my droogies, so viddy well.

I greatly enjoy Soul Eater. As such, this latest chapter makes me feel all warm inside. First we have ACTION, and I finally figured out that Justin was a guillotine. There were probably hints before that, but I never saw it. Besides the ending of the last chapter. And then there's a little arc warning, what with the jealousy and the witches. And finally, my favorite four pages of the chapter. With INVERSE DAT ASS guy and DtK. He's so hilarious.

Now, some manga you'll probably never have heard of. Psyren, and Ushio to Tora. Ushio to Tora has been around for quite a while, but only recently have there been scanlations released for it, so I'm happy, especially since it was an anime that I encountered and enjoyed in my childhood.

Psyren, on the otherhand, is relatively new. It's got over a hundred chapters, so it logically must be over two years old now. Sure doesn't feel that way. Blah blah blah it's shounen. But good shounen. I suppose the best way to describe it would be that it's like Bleach. But back when Bleach was good, without all the focus on the massive amounts of Soul Reapers and neglect of Ichigo's cadre. And it doesn't have a Captain Broken, either. But mostly, what I like about it is that it's a story that deals with time travel. And it's awesome. The dating could've used a bit of work, but it's fiction so eh.

Oh yeah, somebody finally finished up some (low-quality) scan/lations of several of the .hack mangas, and the ending of the s.CRY.ed one. So I was happy. Mostly because manga s.CRY.ed is totally different from the anime. It feels more like JJBA. But with camp. Lots and lots of deliciously hilarious camp.

Also, I would so buy this.

lol, awesome.

And I'm pretty sure Justin used his Guillotine powers before... Back when they were fighting the golem thing and chainsaw-man.

And you know, I think I've heard of both of those manga... >_>

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 15 January, 2010, 08:00:36 pm
He used his powers before. They looked kind of like razor blades coming out of his forearms. Not very indicative of a guillotine, in my mind. Not like all the chains and blocks and pendulum blades in this chapter.

And I said obscure. You probably heard of Ushio and Tora because I recommended it to you. Psyren's getting more popular, but it's still fairly low-profile.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Fuuka Yamagishi on 15 January, 2010, 08:15:39 pm
Eh, whatever.

I just for some reason always thought that Justin was a Guillotine... Maybe someone mentioned it? I can't remember anymore.

Mmmmm, I'm really starting to like Bloody Cross.

There's even new Drifters and Psyren. So good stuff. Especially Drifters. Kohta Hirano is the man, even if his plots (or the scanlators) are hard to make sense of.

Or so you claim.

Anyways, I just finished the latest updates of Project:Arms. Now, since I'd only caught on to the manga right before I started reading it, and it's nearing the end of it's storyline, that means I had to marathon about 20 volumes or so. I managed it in about 2...3 days. More like just 2. Very interesting read. I like the art style too.

And now I'm catching up on the latest Muyho and Roji chapters. Quite good.

TODAY HAS BEEN A GOOD DAY FOR MANGA

FIRST SOME MORE USHIO AND TORA

THEN THE RETURN OF VERITAS, WHICH IS **** AWESOMESWEETNESS

AND NOW THERE'S EVEN D.GRAY-MAN, WITHOUT IT'S CUSTOMARY CONFUSING-AS-**** CLUTTERED VISUALS

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 05 February, 2010, 07:16:24 pm
So I claim, and you have yet to refute.

Today is a good day for manga.

Ushio to Tora. Goddam. Was totally not expecting that. Guess that finally provides a good plot reason for Ushio being such a **** pimp. I expect more awesome. Especially from Ushio as he is now.

I'm going to come out and admit this. I love Hajimeto no Aku. Yeah, it's shoujo and perhaps moe, but...dammit, it makes me laugh and such far too much to not be good.

More Hyde and Closer, Rappi Rangai, and Defense Devil. Mmmm.

And we finally get a flashback where Shigwen admits it. 'Bout damn time.

Huh. More Kanokon. Might as well start reading that again. Then again, might not.

Also, I really need to pick up MiXiM again. I like Noboyuki Anzai's work too much. I owe it to myself.

Apparently they're making one. I saw a trailer for it. Looked pretty cool.

And Kanokon is...ecchi. With a little bit of harem and shounen thrown in for good measure. But mostly ecchi.

you have yet to refute.

Unless you've read past ch.78, then you're just being Salty.
Oh, so we ARE on the same page. I was just checkin' by pissing you off.

Now for more manga review.

Zero: Circle of Flow, huh? Dammit, the plot in these thing always confuses me. And it's not helped much by this shitty scanlation.

Psyren...a slow chappy. Meh, at least it looks like it'll be coming to a climax of this arc fairly soon.

More lulzy Hajimete no Aku. Especially that second-to-last scene or so. Hilarity.

Awesome Ushio to Tora. Awesome. Shigure's name is now officially Helidad. Because that was awesome and he's awesome too.

Amusing Medaka Box. Sode-chan is so delightfully evil. It's like if I were a manga character. Only female. And with an ahoge. And some crazily rich and powerful grandfathernope, got that. And crazy yet-to-be-defined powers.

More Freezing. Yum.

And finally, more Jojo's. Oh god, now the religious symbolism finally kicks into high gear. And something of a Persona 3 reference, to my eyes.

Whew. Project Arms has finally been finished and posted. And I just finished reading it.

I only have one thing to say.

Dee. ****. Am.

This thing should be required reading for anybody who ever seriously wants to get into the manga and anime scene. The art is excellent, the story (though it fails at technobabble sometimes) is engaging, and...dammit, this thing is a classic of manga. I love it so hard. I actually almost had an emotion at the ending scene.

Also, Ryo's dad is officially THE most badass character in the manga. And he's a minor character at that! He's just so damn badass that is shine's through.

Ah, Dogs. One of those series where I simply wish that it had a better translation team, though that one guy does the best that he can. Props to him, but I still wish I had more Luki and Noki.

Cavalier of the Abyss, and finally continuity! Wonder how long it's been since Immortal Regis. No matter, what I'm more concerned with is this thing finally getting a decent translator who can make sense of the text, and...old characters, with old motivations.

More Samidare, hmhmhmmmm...

Damn this is one long flashback in HandxRed...I'm wondering what's up with the release schedule...

Chapter 78's finally out, and I now have proof that Spring's an asshat. Also lolsawyer. Much more lolsawyer than ever before.

And in Stan Lee's new comic starring a guy who looks exactly like Stan Lee would if he were in manga and totally not old or anything as the villain, WE'VE ENTERED AN INFINITE RECURSION OF TIME!

Meh, evil team with ridiculous nicknames. Still wondering what's up with Kabuto though.

Ah, more romantic entanglements with alternate identities that are incredibly see-through. Such a good manga, even though it might count as moe trash.

Ushio, Tora, and a new arc already. With TIME TRAVEL! Ah, will the tropes never cease?

And the clincher, vehicle-based Natsu! I do like Fireball!Natsu, though Lucy being completely useless yet again kind of dashed my hopes.

Oh, and the shark was wearing a white tunic. And speaking English.

While she was in a speeding pickup truck. On a crumbling bridge.

And then then the shark reached escape velocity.

Needless to say, my day is complete.

Haha.... Me without moe....

You know there was a time I didn't watch anime about 2 and a half years ago....

The thing is it was the moe stuff that got me into it.... I mean the first anime I watched was Haruhi.... Well I did watch anime before that but that was like the usual stuff like Dragonball Z, Cardcaptor Sakura and Yu-Gi-Oh.... Stuff like that you'd watch as a kid....

But yeah the real deal started with Haruhi.... By the way I just watched the film.... But I'll leave that for my topic....

Best single chapter of this manga yet.

So as you might have been able to guess from my profile change, I've been watching Casshern Sins for the past few days. It's a 24-episode series, so it's taken me a bit to watch it, what with not being Bizzle and all.

So it's an incredibly dark and depressing series with lots of death and...actually rather beautiful visuals. It's very much a slowly paced anime, with the focus mostly on conversation instead of action. Think .hack//SIGN, but with themes both shared and divergent. Really, a rather strange anime. I recommend it highly, especially to you, Maniac and Bizzle.

And now I'm watching Orphen. It's actually not bad. It's got a nice art style, though it's still very 90s and the dub's not half bad. (By which I mean they've got Spike Spencer and the writing actually seems witty.) But what I like best is the music. It's very...eclectic. One of the first pieces of background music sounded like what you get when somebody half-heartedly remixes an RPG track with an electric guitar. It was **** hilarious.

So I just finished watching Gun X Sword.

Okay, so it's a great series. But not for the first half. Honestly, after the first half, I was pretty damn sure that it was at least an okay series and probably a good one. And this continued up until about...oh, Episode 19, I suppose. For the most part, it just felt a bit scatterbrained, and didn't really do enough with the characters it had, especially the villains. But once it was down to Michael, Fasalina, and the Claw, it somehow kicked into high gear. Ray joined the team, the villains who got highlighted weren't one-dimensional portaits like The Amazing Oedipus Boy and his Incredibly Annoying Twin Sidekicks, the action got better, the animation got better, characters finally sped up and completed their evolutions, and (Let's be honest) Team El Dorado got almost as much screentime as they needed, what with them being the best part of the series and all.

All in all, I was satisfied with the ending, Ray's peaceful death included, although tbqf, I felt Van's last minute powerup was kind of an asspull. But I have to admit, I left this series laughing and having enjoyed it (The stinger was funny, too).

8/10

Huh, turns out you havent reached the point where this manga becomes more centered on battles.

That happens around chapter 90-100, but I guess you've lost interest now...

I myself never read the begining chapters, but rather watched the anime adaption until I ran out of episodes.

New Jojolion. I **** love this gag manga. Poor Joshuu.

Also, Norisuke is a **** psycho.

Plot time!

Also also. This is without a doubt the weirdest bunch of character designs Araki's ever come up with. I can't tell if those balls are Norisuke's hair or just some crazy hat. Plus the maid in the military cap, with star tights. And Joshuu's haircut is lame as all ****. So's the older sister's. It's just so...surreal.

And I decided to start with Vandread. And Karas. No real reason, just things that I'd never actually seen.

So Karas. Kinda light on the story. Still, cool action sequences (though the whole plane/tank/human thing is rather silly in my mind)

Vandread. Blah blah harem blah blah robots blah blah oh my god this CG is so OLD

Wellp, got done watching Toonami. Still as cool as I remembered it. Now for the shows that it more-or-less premiered for the american broadcast audience.

Deadman Wonderland. First episode was alright, actually had a bit that expanded on the manga and gave a slightly less implausible reason for Ganta getting locked up. Speaking of Ganta, he has a bitch voice. Which I guess makes sense, since the world seems to have decided that he's its bitch. And that won't be changing for at least a few episodes.

Casshern Sins? Still as good as I remember. Which is to say it's awesome but for the fucking faces always invoking the uncanny valley. Also, Ringo's voice sets off punt-alarms in my head.

Did Claymore ever get good? I read like 6 volumes before giving up since the monster design was so bad and the art so boring and the story so whatever.

Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 01 May, 2014, 10:22:14 pm
It's probably just personal taste, but I've always enjoyed Yagi's art.

Also, it started going a lot faster once Awakened Beings were introduced, but the fact that it's a monthly manga has kept the pace of updates glacial.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: ganonfloyd on 01 May, 2014, 10:29:39 pm
I mean, I guess the art's not bad, but I found it to be pretty bare a lot, at least in the earlier chapters. Most of the characters looking the same probably didn't help.

I do recall thinking Teresa was rad at least.

Jegus crap I've let this topic hang for a long time.

Anyways, I'm keeping an eye on the anime adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul since I'm fond of the manga. Aaaand I just found Prisma Ilya on Hulu, so I'm probably going to watch that for the hell of it.

At the moment, TG has a knack for compressing the manga chapters while cutting Touka out of scenes, and Ilya's artstyle is just ever so much rounder and softer whilst also displaying that wonderful Ufotable knack for pretty pretty eyes.

And having excellent action scenes...

P.S. Man, this flexible rod is way too happy to be offering girls the chance to be Magical Girls. Such Kyubey vibes, wow.

and tricking them into making a contracto

much evil stick

Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 21 July, 2014, 05:25:37 pm
Ah yes, Episode six (still watching Prisma Illya).

It was every bit as epic as I was expecting it to be.

As a note, most of what I like about this show is either dialogue comedy (mostly involving Rin, Luvia, and the stupid sticks) or the action.

...alright, it's mostly the action. I suppose I'm just that guy here for the action (and not for the lolis)

EDIT: MEIDOS! and apparently Illya agrees.

Watching Kekkai Sensen (blud bluckawhoodabuttle or whatever the pleb name is for all you plebs).

Animation's alright, art and character design's better, and I enjoy the story well enough, but the real draw of this show is the chaos so endemic to it and the fact that it has fucking amazing music.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 08 December, 2015, 05:06:08 pm
So I...uh, finished watching Hamatora.

Hm.

Don't know quite how to put this, but...wow, that was incredibly shitty. I liked the first few episodes well enough, but once they got past the episodes that actually introduced characters the main plot arc was bad, the episodes were infested with random crap that wouldn't cut it in a bad gag anime, the back stories were terrible and terribly tied into the events, the last few episodes it got really murderdeathblood heavy out of nowhere, and the ending was just the stupidest ****.

And that's leaving aside all the terrible visual effects and animation.

I don't think I've ever been this disappointed by an anime...ever.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 22 December, 2015, 02:03:10 am
So in order to get over having watched Hamatora, I've been watching Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet and the new Gundam.

First, Gargantia. I haven't yet finished it, but I'm on the twelfth episode and to be perfectly honest I don't feel like I need to finish watching it to know what happens. Evil former boss man attacks fleet of people he likes, they fight, he wins (probably after his mech sacrifices itself), maybe all the other random idiots (the dumb blond, the great Titty Pirate) chip in to help, and yet another Gen Urobuchi series that started well ends with a whimper.

A pity, really. I like Ledo, and the major twist made, if not perfect sense, then at least enough sense that the subtle and then blatant foreshadowing tied into it into one long back chain of realization.

...aaaaat which point we get a robotic monologue to dismiss it and the emotional climax of the series is quickly discarded to focus on creepy cultists and Ledo rejecting the aping of his former culture in favor of this new place he's grown to like and view without the apathy that formerly characterized him.

And that would be a great plot arc! In the middle of a longer show. At this point, after the major revelation? It just kind of falls flat, especially when it's used for what they're trying to force into being the climax. Also, three episodes is just not long enough to introduce and then solve this whole plot.

As for the new Gundam? I really like that the opening theme and the main character duo, but if this is supposed to be a twelve episode anime they're really mucking with the pacing. I'm 5 episodes in and they've already wasted two mucking about with various emotions and world building instead of getting on with the plot and moving forward. It's still in the middle of resolving the first plot introduced. By the time this gets to Earth the series is going to practically be over, no time for twists whatsoever.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 13 April, 2016, 08:59:48 pm
So turns out that Gundam series was 24 episodes and there were no twists whatsoever. Still, was kind of nice.

Also, I have found something entitled Cyborg 009 vs. Devilman and now I can't not watch it. Will report back.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 13 April, 2016, 09:09:37 pm
It starts with two badass scenes and an opening by JAM Project.

So far so good.

First episode ends with the title characters punching each other's arms off and an ending theme by, again, JAM Project. Plot's thinner than paper, but I'll take it in return for the action and music.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 13 April, 2016, 10:04:30 pm
Episode two was mostly a whole lot of nothing besides setup for the third episode, but there was at least some sweet cyborg action to tide me over.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 13 April, 2016, 10:52:28 pm
So, third and presumably last episode. Still more paper-thin plot nonsense, but there's a ton of action and the big bad evil final boss dude has a pretty sweet design, so I'll go ahead and declare it a worthwhile use of my hour and a half.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 14 April, 2016, 05:00:06 pm
Well there's certainly some Devilman to be found. Most of the real meat is found in the Cyborg stuff, as Devilman himself doesn't get much screen time and most stuff from Devilman is mook shit.

He at least gets some sweet lines though.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 21 April, 2016, 11:45:14 pm
So I guess I'm watching Ajin now.

...You know, I really, really like the manga. But the ****-ass CG they use for the character models in this just detracts from everything but the fight scenes and the black ghosts, who actually have a sweet motion pattern animation going on.

Does have a nice flow of action going on and is a decent adaptation, though. Call it 6/10 right now for me.

Just posting this before Maniac comes raging in about the tweest in the latest One Piece chapter.

I agree. This twist is bad, bad, bad. Not foreshadowed, not original, far too silly. But I'm going to ignore it, because Sanji and Dogtooth are actually pretty cool this chapter.

Title: Re: What Salty does in his spare time.
Post by: Maniac on 13 April, 2017, 05:13:15 am
i subscribe to a community that spoils chapters early and occasionally indulge in it. and did so for this one

like, it's dumb, but it feels like damage control for something equally as dumb so i dunno lol. can't really get too angry about it, even if these kinds of zero-sum twists feel like they're just wasting time

also what i thought would play out was that pudding would just be irredeemable and evil and shit and sanji would break his oath to never hit women because she's enough of a douche to warrant it. which would actually be worse than what really happened, so

Based on work I've done on mobile games, it was probably split between numerous people who had no context for anything they were translating. That obviously doesn't excuse that line or a bunch of other egregious things, but the way that companies set up projects for mobile games makes it near impossible for them to come out well.

there's a few too many loose ends for the series to really end in a comfortable spot here, but with furuta dead and ken most likely getting killed off for good (i sure fucking hope so, at least), there isn't a whole lot of coherent structure to build the further adventures of, i dunno, hide and urie on since all of the remaining villains, while personal and heinous, don't really have any discernable long-term ambitions or goals besides being evil. i guess they could do a time skip and suddenly uta is the evil god-emperor of the world or something, i dunno

but what do i know. i just imagine that when :re ends, I probably won't be satisfied

eta until furuta meets up with uta and donato and goes "lol and ui actually believed me roflmao" because that's horseshit
