Title: Hawk's Eyrie (Now offering free tech support.)
Post by: Hawk_v3 on 26 June, 2009, 05:49:48 pm
Yup. This'll most likely be dead in... oh, give it a day, I reckon.

Anyhoo.

Me and Social Events

So, I went to the college leaver's prom tonight. (I'm English, remember. My College==American High School)

I knew, oh, all of five people who went there. Out of a hundred and fifty, or so. This is off to a good start. Sit down, eat food (free), go and buy drink. It just so happens that the cheapest drink available is Coke at 1.50 a glass... Crap. So, blow about a tenner on Coke for the evening. Great. Eating into my rather limited budget. Alcohol is on sale, and I am allowed it, but at roughly 5 a pint, screw that.

Mingling with strangers:
Let's just make it clear. I hate talking to strangers. Doesn't matter the situation, unless I'm introduced to someone, my end of the conversation trails off to a mumble. So, I'm wandering around, looking like a friendless social reject, (Ok, I can't really deny that one given the above...) and generally making a fool of myself by standing around with a drink, looking like the scenery.

Dancing:

Oh, dear.

Next thing, some utter stranger grabs me by the arm, and asks me to dance. "Score!", your average person might think. I don't like acting like a fool, even if others are doing it without at least a pint. Add to that the stranger thing, and the fact that I have never danced in my life. "Mumblemumblecan'tdance", extract arm from said person's grip, and continue twice over the course of the evening.

Well, that was fun.</sarcasm>

Me and making an utter prat of myself

I just got a new mobo and a processor, also today. A nice shiny Intel quad core, socket 775. I completely blow the *IT wise kid* thing out of the water by telling Tech Support that all the pins are missing off the bottom of the chip, and it is therefore useless, can I have a replacement, thankyouverymuch. Now, I'm used to using AMD processors, whch do have pins on the bottom... 775's don't. So, I'm now waiting to get a very sarcastic email back. And I am dreading it. Mostly 'cos I have to reply "Sorry, I'm a ****, nevermind, mark it of as an I-D-10-T error."

*facedesk*

Sounds like most of the parties I go to. Except I latch onto the people I know like a leech, in order to not look like a social reject. Which I am, but try not to look like.

And look on the bright side. Someone WANTED to dance with you. I've never been asked to dance. Ever.

Well, at least I'm not the only one then.

I nearly did that.

I'm not entirely convinced she was being serious.

Computers.

*censor bleep for a minute* ARSEY ****ING COMPUTERS!

My God! How hard is it to boot from a HDD? Apparently very much so. My new board hates IDE drives. And all my precious, irreplaceable stuff is on the one drive it *will* boot off. Pity that I need to *wipe* that drive in order to put Windoze on it. Oh, and this would happen *before* the day of a LAN party.

*hates overexpensive computer parts, not having the money to get another drive it likes, not having a job, and Bill Gates*

Lol

It started a while back with my dad's laptop, then my older brother's, then my older sister's, mine crashed a few weeks back and had to reinstall everything. The church computer I use had the graphics card die, then a couple months later the hard drive died, and just recently my mom's old laptop died, but we saw that one coming.

*uses Phoenix Down on topic*

Phoenix: *bodily slaps Hawk* And next time you nick a piece of my down, I'll cremate you!

*gets back up from the floor, rubs his beak*
So, good -*glances at clock*- evening people.

Firstly, HAWK HAS A JOB!!! *dances unashamedly* ^v^ At this moment, I could almost dance with another girl I'm so happy.

Bad news. It's a 7:30AM wake up time, and Hawk has screwed his bodyclock over so badly he now falls asleep at two in the morning...

Secondly, Hawk has had a major disagreement with Art. He hates his hands because they won't draw what his mind can imagine. He hates his drawings, because they look crap, further reinforcing his crappyness and unwillingness to draw. So, I'm starting from scratch. Drawing apples, still life, people *spits* that kind of stuff.

And that's about it for today.

Mr. Art is a fickle fiend. One needs practice to get better, yet will be discouraged when they cannot immediately draw what they imagine. I'm in the same boat right now... ^ ^''

What job do you have?

And... pissed? At whom / with what?

I can send you the link to two sites for hobbyists, to make your own for about £30-£40 a tagger. Minimum, but cheaper than £400-£500 from manufacturers.

And yeah. You said you wanna change a PC GPU(Graphics Processing Unit), so I'll give you a guided tour of mine. I'll do the pictures after I've had my tea. I'll point out things of use and knowledge, give some advice I picked up, and tell you what the difference between PCI-E and AGP is, in case your PC uses AGP. It probably won't, but better safe than sorry.

So, first off. Checking if your PC is onboard graphics or another card.

(http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad304/Hawk_v3/GPUfromoutside.jpg)

If your monitor cable goes into the region of the upgrade bays (the slots above and below the cable) then you have a GPU.

If it goes into the region above (the plate with slots on the left hand side of my fan), then it's onboard.

~~~
I'm going to presume you haven't bought a card yet, have a GPU already in the PC and would suggest you don't buy a new card until you know if your PC is PCI-E or AGP. You also want to buy a better card than the one you have, so make sure you know what you have.
~~~

I'll now tell you how to check what type your machine supports and will walk you through actually changing the card.

To check your type, download and run http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) which will examine your mainboard as well as your CPU. We're not interested in the CPU, so click on the mainboard tab and under Graphic Interface>Version *should* say whether it's AGP or PCI-E. I'd confirm, but I'm on the laptop, so it's not picking it up.
###

You will most likely need a *non-magnetic* screwdriver. I cannot stress that enough. If it picks up a screw by magnetism, then it can foul up the insides of your PC.

Next, is opening the case. Unplug the PC after turning the power off at the switch at the back of the PC. Lay it on it's side, and unscrew the cover, which is normally held on by two screws at the back edge where the cover slides on. While doing the following, try to keep touching the metal frame of the PC to ground yourself. Most definetly when you start, at least.

(http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad304/Hawk_v3/PC.jpg)

There's the typical insides of a PC. Admittedly a gaming PC, but yeah.

(http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad304/Hawk_v3/GPUinplace.jpg)

This is the other side of the upgrade slots. The only card in there is my GPU, and it typically sits about there in most PCs.

To take it out, there will normally be two things stopping you from removing it. A screw here;

(http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad304/Hawk_v3/Screw.jpg)

And a clip under the card, here;

(http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad304/Hawk_v3/GPUclip.jpg)

The screw needs to be removed (don't drop it) and the clip needs to be pulled down towards the bottom of the case while the card is gently pulled up. It may need a little bit of effort, but *should not* be forced. There tend to be capacitors around them. *Do NOT damage the capacitors.*

The card itself looks like this:
(http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad304/Hawk_v3/GPUcard.jpg)
Don't touch the copper contacts.

And the slot is:
(http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad304/Hawk_v3/GPUslot.jpg)

... *head kerplodes*

I was hoping it would be a bit simpler then that...

Anyways, question, isn't there a way to tell what kind of card you already have just looking through your computer?  Like if you use the Diagnostic tool?  I am looking at some info here, which I can post if you want.

I also have a card that I didn't buy(my friend gave me his computer when he moved, though it doesn't have a hard drive; it however has a pretty good card that he payed 600 American dollars for).  I have no idea what kind it is... will I be able to tell by looking at it?

Ad is there any chance I might be able to screw my computer up during this process?

Title: Re: Hawk's Eyrie (Now offering free tech support.)
Post by: Hawk_v3 on 07 October, 2009, 03:56:04 pm
Post what you have.

The card should have serial numbers and other stuff on a sticker on it.

You can find out the type from the serial, usually.

And you're delving into a computer. It's possible to wreck it, yes. You'd have to do something silly, though.

You have a PCI-E card.

What's the one you're putting in it?

Spilling something in the case, forcing a part so it breaks, not switching off the power and removing the plug.

I have no idea, it is currently in a different computer...

I'm contemplating leaving it in that computer, and just buying a hard drive for that computer.  It's already a gaming computer(my friend built it himself).

Question: I don't know if you can tell, but with that card, culd I say use an SNES emulator?

And what is a PCI-E card?  Is that good?

That'd probably be easier.

Yes.

And yes.

Oh wait, so let me confirm this;

I already have a good card, and it can run an SNES emulator?  What about a GBA emulator?  PSX?

Sorry if I am being annoying with my questions...

Title: Re: Hawk's Eyrie (Now offering free tech support.)
Post by: Hawk_v3 on 07 October, 2009, 04:18:47 pm
The PCI-E bit is irrelevant, but it should run that emulator no problem.

Your card is ok, but a bit old. It's likely that his is better.

Title: Re: Hawk's Eyrie (Now offering free tech support.)
Post by: Dusty Starr on 07 October, 2009, 04:21:28 pm
Which emulator?  Or all three?

Yeah, I am sure his is better as well... from what I recall, this wasn't really meant to be a gaming computer.  Meh, I will make sure my laptop can handle games...

Title: Re: Hawk's Eyrie (Now offering free tech support.)
Post by: Hawk_v3 on 07 October, 2009, 04:23:37 pm
Should run any of them. I'm not alllowed to help you to run or set up emulators, but the SMF ToS, just so you know.

*chuckles* PC is better than a laptop for gaming.

Title: Re: Hawk's Eyrie (Now offering free tech support.)
Post by: Dusty Starr on 07 October, 2009, 04:25:53 pm
What do you mean?  Emulators are not illegal.  How you get the ROM/ISO/whatever is or isn't.

Why you laugh at me?  I'm not smart on these things. :(

And about the only game that isn't on an emulator I would play would be Fallout 1/2, which are pretty old, and I think I could even play them on this one... maybe.

Title: Re: Hawk's Eyrie (Now offering free tech support.)
Post by: Hawk_v3 on 07 October, 2009, 04:29:54 pm
Sorry, I'm not laughing at you. I promise.

I purely meant if you get a machine to play games on they tend to produce heat. Laptops are built to be almost as compact as possible, and suck at losing heat. Towers are much better at it.

Emulators and/or roms may not be illegal, but if I talk about them this forum may be shut down.

Quite simply, I can help you with anything except running or problems with any kind of ****/illegal/questionably legal stuff. Google will help you there. I will not discuss this any further.

Thanks, I probably will come to you for that.  But first I need to buy one... and they don't come cheep, do they?

Also, I'm going to have to kick my friend who told me I wouldn't be able to use an emulator with this computer/card.
