Because they go to Rivendell...and also the ones in Mirkwood

Rivendell wasn't a major part of the Hobbit though.

They did go there, though

But that's no reason for elf chicks in the trailer

Or in the movie, for that matter.

It's not like Jackson didn't take creative license with the main trilogy, and that turned out pretty well. I'm not about to get my panties in a bunch just because Galadriel's going to make a cameo.

Case in point, Orlando Bloom is also billed in the cast list. Legolas was never mentioned by name in the book, but it's certainly feasible that he could have been there while they go through Mirkwood.

Other exciting things, Stephen Fry as the master of Laketown, and (rumored) BRIAN BLESSED as King Dain.

Also, the guy who's voicing Smaug is also listed as "the Necromancer," so that should be fun.

Stephen Fry and Brian Blessed would be worth it.

Alas, it won't be so. Dain will apparently be played by Billy Connolly, which could be pretty awesome too.

I'm surprised by the number of actors I recognise in this movie, though, as opposed to LOTR where I didn't know anyone.

So apparently it's now being split into a trilogy, not just two films. An Unexpected Journey this year, The Desolation of Smaug in 2013, and There and Back Again in 2014.

Went to the movie theater. Back again.

Three hours. Of me in my seat. Staring at New Zealand. Again.

Well played, Peter Jackson...

...Also, the Goblin King is a Vogon.

went and saw it in the 48 fps format.  Was not disappointed, but it can be kind of jarring during the action sequences.

Yeah, I was undecided on it. Thought it looked odd in a few places. I'd like to see it in just regular old whatever fps.
I enjoyed the movie, though.

Thorin was too boss in this.

I don't know if it makes a difference seeing it in 3D (I didn't), but I didn't see any real problems with the framerate or CGI. I have a whole new respect for Dwarves, though.

I like how they re-used some of the themes from LotR, although I did think it was odd that for the moment where Thorin is charging towards Azog they chose to use the theme (or a similar one) for the Ringwraiths in Fellowship.

48 FPS LOOKED LIKE SHIT. SOAP OPERA.

I don't know if I saw it in 48 FPS, but I saw it in 3D and the only problems I had were with some of the action scenes seeming to have a lot of motion blur.

Then again, I wear glasses, so 3D's already a problem for me.
