Title: I play games...and sometimes I write about them. (Anarchy Reigns!)
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 30 March, 2014, 07:42:00 pm
In which I create a topic for chronicling my thoughts on the games I might happen to be playing at whatever time.

On that note...

Floydeo my boydeo, you'd best have BBCP by Monday.

Because I sure will.

Choices are the devil.

Especially when the choices come between you and me and my foot and your ass.

You should know that by now.

DISRUPTOR

I'll likely get the eventual "here's all the DLC content" package since Kokonoe is my most wanted newcomer along with Azrael.

Haven't been able to get to a computer to load up DSII yet.

Don't spoil me. I'mma make this a playthrough topic for it.

At least until Tuesday, when I'll have to find a way to split up my time between this and smacking Floyd around.

So just recently I beat the HD Okami remaster they put out on PS3.

Took me about 50-odd hours to 100% it, and a whole lot of that time was spent getting all the collectibles (all those **** beads!) and the various challenges associated with them (oh sweet Jestus those Devil Gate trials why didn't I wait until endgame for all of them instead of just the very last one, which by the way had three sword-spamming hamhock bearded motherfuckers).

Funnily enough, I used Reflectors as my main weapons pretty much the entirety of the game, since Rosaries did **** damage and Swords always lagged behind in itemization as well as being **** awkward with all the charge mechanics.

Asura's Wrath is basically an anime, and I think that's why I like it so much.

I mean, if it were built on/for better hardware I might not get all these frame drops that annoy me, but the game itself I enjoy. It's so **** stylish.

I just fought Augus in an epic duel whilst Mars, the Bringer of War played in the background.

That was just holy shit levels of hype.

I mean, Blade Mode Augus is a bitch and a half to deal with, but that episode was so sweet I was almost bouncing in my seat.

Episode 11.5 is weirdly beautiful.

I mean, there's stunning animation and use of color, but the designs just have to be deliberately off-model, and the way they animate faces in it is just...

Bizarre.

Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 13 June, 2014, 08:46:06 pm
Alright, I like how Episode 12's writing goes, but the gameplay of most of the part is one of the more boring ways that Asura's Wrath can play, and it's not even a very good example at that.

Definitely no Augus fight.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 13 June, 2014, 10:39:30 pm
Chapters 13 and 14 were really kinda hard.

I mean, I know I don't do too well in shooty bits anyways, but it seems like Yasha is so much more squishy than Asura, and the fact that the later chapters are the harder ones doesn't help a bit.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 13 June, 2014, 11:43:57 pm
Okay, that bit in Chapter 15 with Sergei ranting and his weird glowing blood mouth while Asura's holding him up by the head and his body is ragdolling all over the place?

That was a piece of magnificent direction, even if it did seem to contain all of the Sergei closeups.

And then Asura just drops him and curbstomps him.

Aaaaaah, this game's sense of style just keeps getting to me.

Jegus **** though, Episode 15 is no joke. I mean, doing it all in one run requires a level of mastery and sheer patience bordering on the godly.

Of course, I speak so after I did it. Now I just need to S rank it on Hard...

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Marie Rose on 14 June, 2014, 01:37:53 am
You're planning to S rank it all on Hard?

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 14 June, 2014, 02:36:04 am
Yyyyup. Already more than halfway there, what with having just got the S rank on chapter 15 (it's apparently one of the hardest ones) as well as every chapter prior to it.

Seriously though, you need to be pretty damn near perfect with your counters and be rather lucky with your specials to get the S.

Post by: Marie Rose on 14 June, 2014, 03:49:44 pm

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 23 June, 2014, 08:33:29 pm
So I finally finished the main portion of the game a couple of days ago.

It took me until yesterday to get that last S rank for Chapter 3; Vritra is a bitch, but is actually much easier once you've run it a few times to get the patterns and weakness timing down. Actually, that last bit is something I find happens a lot in Asura's Wrath. There are so many many many enemies who will have super armor on their attacks and tiny windows of vulnerability where you can stun them and then launch them into combos and damage for gauge. And I've come up with this little mantra (heh) in my head for doing episodes. The first time is for learning the thing, the second is for refining your strategies, and the third is for actually clearing the damn thing. This of course does not account for having to restart on account of dying, which happens a lot on Hard since it's literally the last chapters and all enemies hit like a truck.

That said, I'm well into the last bit of the DLC (which is basically another chapter) I've completed Episodes 19, 20, and 21, where I've S ranked 19 and 20, but I suspect I still have some revision to do on 21 (seriously, fuck you Yasha and your teleporting bullshit) before I can finally S rank it. After that will be...episodes 22/23/24, I guess?

Heh, a 24 episode anime.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Marie Rose on 23 June, 2014, 09:30:53 pm
Never saw most of the DLC stuff myself

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 23 June, 2014, 09:54:14 pm
There's basically three bits.

Two interstitial anime episodes (they get .5s appended to them) that are interesting to watch but...that's about it, and the big Nirvana DLC which is basically the final chapter of the game.

That must have been a kick in the nuts when it was first released, what with the DLC not actually being out yet...

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 24 June, 2014, 12:38:58 pm
So...uh, turns out there were no episodes 23 or 24. Episode 22 was the very last one (and what a long one it was!)

In other, entirely unrelated news, turns out I beat and S ranked all of the game on hard, leaving me with only some random trophies for running the game on different difficulties and with various handicaps if I want to complete the set.

In the spirit of honesty, I'll just say I probably won't.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Marie Rose on 24 June, 2014, 02:03:29 pm
You might as well if the hard part is already over

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them.
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 24 June, 2014, 07:07:51 pm
I suppose I could, but half the point of playing this game was so I could watch it while I was playing, and it's not exactly a short game either. Just skipping through everything all over again for some random trophies really doesn't appeal to me all that much.

Especially when I could spend that time playing other games that I could write about here.

BTW, finished all those trophies just 'cause I could and am moving on to other games now.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them. (Enchanted Arms time!)
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 01 July, 2014, 12:14:43 am
So yeah I've decided I'm going to play through (and most likely 100%, given my compulsions) Enchanted Arms, an old as hell JRPG by, surprise surprise, From Software. Yes, the guys who made all the Souls games.

Most of the reason I'm playing it is honestly that it was my first JRPG on this generation of consoles (I had it for 360 a fuck-off long time ago), I never actually got around to finishing it at that time, and I saw it in the used games bin for ridiculously cheap.

And boy oh boy does the age of this thing show. If it's not the dated designs, sub-par graphics, laughably execrable English voiceover (although oddly enough there's an option for somewhat decent Japanese voices) or the obvious throw-in console gimmicks (shake your SixaxisTM controller for MOAR POWAH!!), it's made obvious by the fact that not only does it have random encounters, it has an encounter rate set so high you can barely move your character for 10 seconds without being interrupted by some random battle.

And it's not even like most of the random battles are interesting! They're literally an exercise in trying to blow up all of your enemies before they can get a shot off, because allowing them to get a turn means at the end of the battle you lose points from a meter used to gauge your endurance. Random battles are literally supposed to grind you down in this game! It's preposterous!

And that's just not even getting into everything else about the design.

So yes, I'm playing this game, and I've already gotten through the introductory bits with the obligatory doomed hometown. I'm now at the bit with the spunky, troubled tsundere and her all-too accommodating bodyguard/babysitter with the cool pauldrons and stupid hat.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them. (Enchanted Arms time!)
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 02 July, 2014, 02:32:47 pm
So that's another couple of dungeons and a few more bosses now.

Story's still fairly predictable (although I'm already mostly spoiled on it despite not actually remembering all that much all that clearly) but at least the battles are getting a little harder.

Still grindy as all fuck, and as far I can tell designed to be that way.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them. (Enchanted Arms time!)

So I beat up the fire dragon demon guy, and am now in sandy vagina city listening to this annoying kid party member's ever so sad backstory.

Also, all my characters are swole as fuck with this stat-buying shit the game lets you abuse.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them. (Enchanted Arms time!)
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 14 July, 2014, 02:16:42 am
And I'm basically in the endgame right before all the final boss fights right now.

Which of course means that I did a bunch of shit after the last time I updated. Most this involved finishing up sandy vagina city, then immediately moving on to loljapan city where I had to deal with a bunch of obstructionist fuckyfucks and their incompetent creeper of a boss. This of course necessitated my finding ninjas kidnapping the token tsundere love interest and leading me on the wildest goose chase until I finally beat all of them up and jesus christ what is it with this game and splitting the party. But yeah I went and fought things and fought bosses and dealt with this pretty cool guy in a pretty cool outfit and he gave me new skills and then I used the skills to kill a big dumb samurai tank boss!

And then there was more talking and walking around and talking and a couple bossfights with a guy who seems to hate shirts and I'm cleaning up all the sidequests for phat lewts.

So I'm like halfway through the big bonus dungeon that's so uber hard it's even harder than the rest of everything else in the game.

And man is it a slog.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them. (Enchanted Arms time!)
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 16 July, 2014, 04:41:04 pm
So after approximately all of the grueling grind through this bonus dungeon, I finally arrived at the super-duper-ultra-omega bonus final boss and beat him.

...

I guess it's time to go beat the game now.

Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 16 July, 2014, 06:24:40 pm
Aaaand that's that game beat.

I probably liked it more 7 years ago, when it would have been new.

Now though, it's just kind of a grind fest without much in the way of actual difficulty.

I'm playing through the campaign mode of Anarchy Reigns on Hard. And I do mean Hard.

Still, I like this game, if only for the over-the-top aesthetic and the fact that it has the Blacker Baron and Mathilda.

Currently on Black Side Stage 4.

So I beat Anarchy Reigns a long time ago. Coulda had a better story mode. Defo coulda had a better online mode.

So I've been playing Valkyria Chronicles...pretty much beat that, still have yet to 100% (rassem frassem NG+)

And I've also started up FFXIII again, since I never finished it.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them. (Anarchy Reigns!)
Post by: Ƨɒlƚy on 13 February, 2015, 03:31:38 pm
I've played it before, so I do have some developed opinions on it.

First of all, most of the characters at the beginning are annoying pieces of ****, save Sazh.

Second, while the fast pace of action in the fights does make for tension, it also means that you have to use autobattle practically all the time, which can lead to the game feeling like you're doing nothing but pressing x and switching paradigms over and over again.

Third would be map design, but everybody and their kid brother has already gone over that. I'll just point out that I find the linearity distracts from all the immensely impressive visuals and vistas, because you get locked into feeling like you should only be heading forward and not paying attention to anything else. Tunnel vision, basically.

Title: Re: I play games...and sometimes I write about them. (Anarchy Reigns!)
Post by: Fuuka Yamagishi on 13 February, 2015, 03:49:53 pm
yeah, most of the characters are pretty obnoxious. Sazh is good, I liked Snow personally, and Hope gets massively better.

I don't recall using Autobattle that frequently, but then again it's been forever since I played it. I recall hitting a wall at a certain point in the game where I had rethink how I fought, otherwise I'd get destroyed every time.

Map design, yeah I can understand that. The game really is beautiful to look at, but it does a good job of making sure you don't pay too close attention.

Despite all the problems it has, It's actually one of my favorite FF games for some reason. Maybe because I've only ever beat three of them, so my opinion is probably a little slanted, but still.

You know, sometimes I forget I even have topics?

Anyways, been playing Evolve some after it went F2P.

It's...definitely a beta, and the bugs abound. That said, I do like playing as the monsters. It's much more tense and self-reliant than playing as the hunters, where it always seems like it's trivial to catch the monster, but victory is dependent on everybody else not **** up.

A long time ago I promised myself I'd finish, XCOM: EW on Impossible.

A few days ago, I decided to keep that promise.

...

Jesus **** have I been save scumming. XCOM's infamous starting difficulty is the real deal, as you almost always lose runs within the first two months, when you haven't yet got your economy and security network off the ground.

Still, I'm motoring along fairly well, and am just about to finish the first big objective in the Alien Base. Not before I unlock all the plasma weapons I can, of course, but it's looming.

It's a combination of them being the most common mid-level enemy throughout the game, the fact that their plasma rifles will fuck you up and they're hellisly accurate with them, their ridiculous mobility, and the fact that they're always scattered fucking everywhere.

I've got the most ridiculous backlog impossible, but sometimes I actually manage to make my way through it.

This is one of those times. I've been playing Xenogears, and have finally managed to hit the infamous second disc. While it's true that the plot and narration certainly shifts into ultra-high Gear (lol), what actually strikes me about it is the way that the gameplay drops off of the face of the planet. Oh, this boss fight? Nah, he does no damage to you. Oh, this boss fight? Nah, you can oneshot him. And it's narration narration narration all the time.

I can't help but think that this tendency actually began at the end of the whole Shevat portion of the story though (and don't get me started on the execrable melodrama nestled comfortably within the Solaris portion)

Alright, so I probably should have said this about the time that Nortune turned into a megazord that used a submarine as a beam cannon, but I think whoever made Xenogears was watching the wrong mecha shows.

Yes, you put mecha in your game. No, putting a four-minute-long sequence of the Elements forming Voltron was not a good idea.

Just like the first one, Second also has a bunch of FarmVille-type content that runs while you have the game in sleep mode, so the sooner you get on it, the better.

3DS is borked, need to get it looked at. In the meantime, I finished Xenogears and wrote a little about it.

So I just finished a playthrough of Xenogears that I started whothefuckknowshowlongago.

On the whole, an...interesting game. Decidedly a product of its times, definitely ambitious, but objectively a buggy, rushed mess. And donít get me started on my issues with the ending.

Was mildly amused to see that Production I.G. had done the anime cutscenes, though. Thought that style was familiar.

So yeah, I can see why some people look back on it with nostalgia goggles. But as somebody looking at it from a different lens, all I can really think of is just how much could have and should have been changed.

my favorite part of xenogears was how they bit off more than they could chew and had to massively rush that game in the end, and then the designers went on to do the exact same thing with xenosaga lol
