Title: Pushing Buttons (DB) (Who even knows anymore)
Post by: Fuuka Yamagishi on 24 May, 2014, 04:03:06 am
Gaming progress blogs are the cool thing now.

So, I have been playing Demon's Souls recently. My brother's had it for a while, but he got fed up with it and quit. Not sure how long I've put into the game so far, but I'm already way ahead of where he was. Picked a soldier to start with, and it seems to be suiting me well. I just beat Flamelurker on my first try (as well as first run through 2-2) using a flame resist ring, a flame shield, and sticky white stuff for my spear. I felt quite accomplished, considering how many times i've died on all the other levels...

I'm enjoying the game so far. The hardest part is really just figuring out how your character moves, how the enemies attack, how to counter them, and which weapons are more effective on which enemies... the rest is not screwing up and walking off the edge (like i do sometimes...) Though I always forget I have a button that just lets me jump backwards... That would've saved my life a lot.

Up next? Probably 4-3. Get one of those archdemon souls. Going with that one because I hear 3-2's boss is annoying, I hate 5, and 2-3 still sounds intimidating...

*souls*

*lands face first into topic*

If you can do Flamelurker you have nothing to fear from 2-3. Also are you gonna play Dark?

i was doing gaming progress blogs before they were cool

I think I might've resurrected an old fad or something. I can't remember many gaming topics besides youefs until early on this year.

That was the intent, yeah. I was thinking, "I wanna try Dark Souls" but then was like "I don't have any money"
So i'm playing this for now

I think I might've resurrected an old fad or something. I can't remember many gaming topics besides youefs until early on this year.

that's what i do

i feed like a parasite off the popular things

anyway, busy all day today so no progress ):

gonna annihilate 2-3 since it should apparently be no problem for me and then probably 4-3, then work on the others. I hear 5-2 is obnoxious...

What's your build?

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB)
Post by: Fuuka Yamagishi on 25 May, 2014, 12:46:15 am
Soldier, mostly focusing on Strength, Endurance and Vitality. (or whatever the HP boosting stat is). A little Dex thrown in so I can use bows too. I mostly use a long sword and a winged spear, though my mace has come in handy against the skeletons and things that are in general weak to blunt.

Correct build.

Killing the Flamelurker on your first try is really impressive. Kudos.

that's my number 1 skill in life

playing videogames

In other news, I have defeated the storm king or whatever. Not really a hard fight, just obnoxious mostly. Had issues hitting him with the sword. The Dragon God was an absolute cakewalk once I figured out where to go.

maneaters kicked my posterior regions in several consequent attempts to defeat them, as expected

i resorted to killing one through the fog with a bow before entering the room >_>
They're dead now though, and i don't have to go through that stupid level anymore

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB)
Post by: Fuuka Yamagishi on 26 May, 2014, 10:30:45 pm
you mean

best level

it's like

it's not that the enemies are hard

it's just like, i keep falling off the edge or getting cheap shotted

Didn't know you could do that

yeah, if you stand on the far right side of the doorway you can shoot arrows into there

Been playing Bravely Default on and off currently as well. I enjoy it a lot, but can't seem to find time to play it. Mostly because whenever I'm home I'm on the computer or playing Demon's Souls...

Anyway, I just got the knight asterisk thing, so I'm not very far at all. The fight with that boss was super obnoxious though. My black mage ran out of MP right at the beginning of the fight, against a guy who's got high physical defense... It took a while, but I finally chipped him down to nothing. Edea is now a knight.

Also, trying to fix my issues with C&C95. The issues of trying to get almost 20 year old games to work on a modern system...

Life break has ceased, resuming Dark Souls.

Slowly adjusting to the differences from Demon's Souls, The axe, oddly enough, has become my weapon of choice.

It's so... metal

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB)
Post by: Marie Rose on 14 June, 2014, 01:36:05 am
I used a basic axe for a long time

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB)
Post by: Fuuka Yamagishi on 17 June, 2014, 12:06:10 am
it is boss

hmm

problem is, if i have it equipped with my current setup, it throws me just above the threshold for having the fast roll

of course this means an endurance stat dump is coming

I have conquered the Bell Gargoyles with assistance from Solaire and... that other knight I found. Kinda made that one a cakewalk... 3 on 2 isn't exactly fair, even when they are large stone demons.

Jeez the Titanite demon was a pain. It's just like there's not really any place to hit him then get away safely, except those stairs. Took me several tries though. How can something that's missing a head and a leg be so obnoxiously accurate and fast?

Also went into Darkroot garden a little before heading down to the other bell. Face-Munching Tree Demons, Meet: Axe. No wonder the ents hated axes. Got the hang of the stone knights pretty easy too. Just get behind them, suck up the occasional hit with a shield and then whack them from behind. Also, once I figured how to dodge the butterfly boss it was lol. Dive then spam firebombs. pretty sure someone somewhere mistook the carnage for a terrorist attack.

Most deaths are now caused by impatience as opposed to incompetence with the system.

Also, I really love kicking enemies off ledges. I feel so cool...

She is, but if *sperlers* you don't summoner her against the Butterfly you can't summoner her against The Four Kings, who can be a pain in the dick.

Dark Souls: prepare your anus edition

Stupid rat gangs and their poison, dead in seconds with no chance of fighting back. didn't get cursed again though, which is nice

I guess tending toward the lighter armor setups means I have to use it a little more often, parrying, rolling jumping backwards, all that.

I hate running slow.

Summary of progress today:

Lautrec owned. What a punk. Indeed Fire was a great help in that fight.

Ornstein and Smough have been slaughtered, thanks to Solaire. PRAISE THE SUN

lol amazing chest ahead

Puttered around for a while after getting the lordvessel. Teleporting between bonfires is very nice.

Ash lake looks awesome. Not much else needs to be said about that.

lol ceaseless discharge, falling like a punk
gotta say though, one of the more visually intimidating bosses.

felt epic slaughtering taurus demons one by one, considering how much difficulty i had with the first one in the game (lol me)

Oh hey that graveyard. I should probably go there now. one shottin' skeletons, pro style (i got massacred here in the beginning of the game).

The catacombs. First place I am actually feeling anxious about walking into... That shade of brown and darkness, I guess. that and this is where that NOPE gif is from.

Also, clocking in at about 45+ hours, and I don't think I'm that close to beating the game.

Dark Souls Status: Completed

Geez I know that this game is not known for its direct storytelling, but geez, some of the minor bosses got more cinematics than the final boss... and that ending? Maybe the shortest ending I've seen to any kind of RPG... Also, Gwyn was super easy, especially with Solaire around.

But hey I did it. Now, on to Dark Souls 2, once I get it...

Don't care what the haters say, Skyward Sword is one of my most favorite Zelda games.

Also Hero mode makes the game like, 20x better to play by removing hearts.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but that was during the crazed rush of playing it for hours on end and doing nothing else when it released. I need to replay it and see how it stands up.

Stats are finally actually decent, got (most of) the Drangleic Set (the Drangleic sword is satisfying my BKS needs)

Beat the Dragonrider without dying, surprisingly (to me)

Conquered the Lost Bastille, THREE ENEMY BOSS FIGHTS URGH
bellclaire helped a lot though (what a cute name for a ghost)

oh boy, suicide mummies

Almost everyone beats the Dragonrider without dying, the guy's a joke.

Suicide mummies are probably within top 5 of enemies I don't like.

Well, Finally killed that stupid chariot thing. Wasn't the chariot that gave me problems, but those skeletons raaagh
finally just decided to buy out the cat lady of all her alluring skulls and used almost all of them to distract the skeletons >_>

The Skeleton Lords battle on the other hand, was a one-sided beat down on my side. Kinda disappointing, really. I even went into the battle with only one Estus Flask use left, and like one lifegem available.

Aiming for playing Kingdom Hearts in the meantime, assuming I can find the copy of it...

Likely the original, as that's what my sister has and I am stealing her copy

Though I might borrow another friend's, which would be the HD ReMix.

I'm fairly sure you've always had more posts than me, but I digress. I'm around this site in an active capacity right now because of something random vicariously said to me in chat tonight, likely unknowingly but still.

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB) (Persona 4 kinda)
Post by: Fuuka Yamagishi on 26 January, 2015, 01:15:40 am
huh, i see why i haven't updated this

anyway, i finished KH1, have yet to delve into KH2, just not feeling it yet.

I've technically started on Persona 4, but I've been distracted by VNs and associated feels

i am become weeaboo

Having finished Hoshizora no Memoria (which I loved), I'm going back to finish the other routes in Katawa Shoujo. Lilly's route = feels
unfortunately i'm pretty sure the best routes are behind me

Also played Planetarian, which is excellent, and I recommend it.

Well, after dying horribly to a knight miniboss, I have successfully come back to destroy him mercilessly.

Then I got owned by a random encounter. buh

I have to say, trying to balance life and adventuring is really stressful... I want to just charge in and rescue now, not mess around playing soccer... Socializing can wait!

Fair warning, P3 has the AI control your teammates, and the game ends if the MC falls in battle.

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB) (Persona 3 & Tales of Hearts R)
Post by: Fuuka Yamagishi on 04 March, 2015, 11:46:34 pm
Yeah, I'm actually already several hours into it. You lost if the MC fell in P4 as well, so that's nothing new.

Getting used to the AI controlling the others is the more difficult task however. It's baffling to me, since it's turn-based RPG.

Also yeah this game is already tougher than P4. either that or i need to grind moar

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB) (Persona 3 & Tales of Hearts R)
Post by: ganonfloyd on 05 March, 2015, 03:39:16 pm
p3 better since it doesn't take seven years to actually start and the battles require you to think

Finished P4A like a week ago or something

Pretty satisfactory conclusion to both P4 and P3, P3 in particular. Adachi's story was nice, I... don't think he's as terrible as he acted now?

and now the hype train is endless for P5 and SMTxFE, gonna play SMT4 after MM3D, also probably gonna pick up Persona Q sometime soon as well

MAJORA'S MASK 3D (AKA every zelda fanboy's wet dream)

I always liked Majora's Mask. I'm not gonna be one of those guys who yells "BEST ZELDA EVAR", but I always found it enjoyable, and this remake really doesn't disappoint so far. I think my favorite change so far is the way the bosses have changed. Sure the eye thing might be a little weird, but the way you are forced to actually use some items is pretty cool.

Right now I'm about to enter the Stone Temple Tower, completing the Anju & Kafei quest while conquering Ikana Castle and the joker skeletons within. I like how the mask that turns the nightmare fuelish redeads into hilarious dancing corpses is the mask you get immediately before entering the main place they reside.

yeah, there's a weird amount of platforming for a game that's not really designed around that idea

waifus + self-aware parody pretty much, makes fun of JRPG tropes, references any anime and video game thing possible and also boobs
The whole thing is basically a non-too-serious look at the politics of the video game industry

the first two games are amusing enough, but the story is pretty lacking. it boils down to "piracy is bad okay"
But the third game's story actually isn't too bad, as it's set in a world that's basically right after the video game crash of 1983

i wonder if a game in the future will cover the "ethics in gaming journalism" topic that is super popular these days
seems like a topic Neptunia would have fun with

the closest thing a JRPG comedy plot would get to that is tackling the PC issue in japan (kinda like that shimoneta anime that aired last season), which has an entirely different implication there than it does in the west. or i dunno, maybe NISA will take a card from FUNi and put a ga- I mean, a la-li-lu-le-lo joke in some translation somewhere

So, having finished (and quite enjoyed) Undertale, I'm playing Tales of Zestiria primarily right now.

I will say I haven't felt as drawn into this one as I have other Tales games, but I still find it quite enjoyable. So far Sorey's not the most interesting protagonist, but the side characters are funny enough. Particularly Rose and Edna.

Also I updated that old Backloggery thing with a bunch of new stuff and am thinking of keeping it updated, so here's the link:

Not the chibi stuff, lazy and lowres as it is.

The faces on the full characters look like Nomura took a look at his Kingsom Hearts work and said to himself "Let's make these faces even more childish and void of features! And for good measure let's just make the heads super huge compared to the necks and bodies!"

if you've watched some videos of how the games work and play and think they look boring, you'll prolly find no redeeming value to them

tales seems like the kind of thing that clicks perfectly for a very specific kind of gamer, with very little overlap with any other audience aside from the RPG-starved kids who only owned a gamecube back in 2004 that enjoyed the bajeezus out of symphonia and proceeded to never play another title in the series.

not that hard to be that last one, considering the serious quality and console divergence the Tales games have had

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB) (Tales of Zestiria & Bloodborne)
Post by: Maniac on 22 December, 2015, 03:42:59 pm
i guess it gets confusing. i've just noticed quite a few people who put a ton of significance into symphonia without having played another game, and like, pretty much every 6th-7th gen console except the xbox has a tales game, and of those, only wii doesn't have one at a level of competence on par with that of symphonia (and that's the only one that isn't self-contained, too).

i've always thought of symphonia as one of those games i loved back when i was 11 because i loved vaguely anime shit and only played like, 5 j-rpgs at most up to that point, and then was unable to bring myself to replay it. kind of like star ocean 3 lol

Tales is a pretty niche game series, for those who like shonen anime and active battles. I find the games to be fun personally, and I enjoy the stories presented. Probably because i'm a boring weeb.

If you're not into jrpgs, you'll probably not like them. The stories have been taking darker turns recently though. For all its bright graphics, Zestiria has subplots about murder and lots of children dying.

If you ask me, Vesperia is probably my favorite tales game. The protagonist is one who probably would appeal to more western tastes (even if he does have the "pretty boy" look), and it's plot doesn't require you to take notes to understand. Plus it's on 360, and most people have those.

Tales of Hearts R is another good choice, if you have a Vita. (nobody has a Vita) You get to play as hentai-kun and the greatest Tales waifu

Worst tales game to start off with? Tales of Legendia. That game is weird. It's pretty good though.

Phantasia tho. I have to give it credit for being the first Tales game, but i barely remember the plot and the battle system is frustrating as hell. "Let's stop every five seconds to watch Claus summon Sylph again" Arche is pretty good tho, and Mint is adorable.

*continues rambling in the distance*

The thing that's always frustrated me about the Tales games (besides the console divergence) is that they decide to solve the divergence problem with Japan-only updated rereleases.

yeah, like releasing vesperia on PS3 with new story, and an entire new character

then again, they did that with Tales of Hearts R, and we got the remake instead of the original

tales has always had some darker elements in the background -- like, you'd prolly have more trouble counting the games that don't have genocide of some sort going on. of course, every game kinda has the weird thing going where some sick or tragic **** might happen towards the side, but the characters are always consummately goofy, quirky and anime and it ends up producing this really weird, almost uncomfortable amount of dissonance between the cast and some of the stuff they do or get involved in.

And also creepy human experimentation, slavery, massacres, generations of manipulation...

Honestly, Symphonia is a pretty dark once you look past the visuals and the characters personalities. I mean, it's still a shounen at heart, but the world it's set in isn't exactly the brightest vision of humanity out there.

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB) (Tales of Zestiria & Bloodborne)

abyss was pretty creepy in regards to the entire replica thing and how they factored into the main villain's plans. of course, that game had a super quirky party who always seemed completely at odds with how gross and dark that world is, but considering that every party member was some different variety of a complete asshole from the rest, i guess that wasn't the weirdest bit to it.

vesperia had some amazingly awful, moustache twirling villains like the guy who fed tons of people, including children, to the beasts in his dungeon for fun. even the token lame, super-effeminate, liam o'brien-voiced villain was pretty amazingly awful. that one was kind of weird in how dour and dark its protagonist was, yet how goofy and quirky literally everyone else in the party was (god damn loli pirate)

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB) (Tales of Zestiria & Bloodborne)
Post by: Fuuka Yamagishi on 22 December, 2015, 11:32:09 pm
Abyss is pretty great. I love the way the story is presented through the main character's perspective. Though it's not a good game to start with because the protagonist is really grating, especially to begin with. Jade Curtiss might be the top tales character ever.

I can't remember a lot about Legendia right now, but I do remember that it involved a WMD that was fueled by people and people trying to instigate wars by using it.

I need to replay some of these games and just write down everything terrible that happens in them...

If you truly believe it will help you enjoy the games, then you should go ahead and do it. I'm of the opinion it'll take a lot of time and that breaking the flow of the game for the sake of writing things down will work in the opposite direction, but I'm not you.

Story's not bad, even if it's pretty much a copy of Chrono Trigger, and I enjoyed the characters.

The main negative thing I'd have to say about it is the references can get a little out of hand sometimes

some painful missteps aside, i'm pretty okay with birthright in a "this is a really generic, bare-boned, completely un-nuanced story with nothing actually going for it" kind of way. i guess conquest is more nonstandard so i guess maybe it gets points for that, but it's such an unspeakable trainwreck about how it goes about itself.

Alfred and Valtr are the other guys. Did you ever find a lady wearing a plague doctor mask?

I missed her my first time playing. I don't know why they couldn't have placed her in more noticeable location, because the path to her is really out of the way and hidden.

I think I found her almost by accident. I guess there's by no means any reason for them to make it easy to find people, though.

I'm pretty sure it's too late if you didn't initiate her side quest in her first encounter, unless something else happens there that I'm unaware of.

You don't actually have to see her at the first place, but if you miss her at the Tomb then it's too late.

I think the proof that you're overleveled is that you keep getting summoned to fight a different boss than the one you put a summon sign down for

Yeah, Dancer. It's funny because my setup is horribly inadequate for taking on the Dancer, I get owned in seconds while doing little damage.

She's really not meant to be taken on that early. Honestly, I have no idea why hosts go down to all the Vordt summons to fish up someone to help with her, that generally just puts the host at a disadvantage.

Also this is the first game I've really tried to use the co-op stuff, and it makes me regret not doing it in other games, because it's a blast, and useful too

Multiplayer in Souls games, at least co-op stuff, is pretty underappreciated I'd say. But maybe not, given that it's what keeps some people playing the games for years and years.

Title: Re: Pushing Buttons (DB) (Who even knows anymore)
Post by: Maniac on 10 May, 2016, 10:14:59 pm
Eh, a lot of people get exposure to these games by seeing silly multiplayer videos or excerpts. I have real life friends who I explicitly know don't care about these games regularly send me silly troll-y PvP videos anyway, at any rate.

Back in my underclassman days, when Dark Souls 1 had been out for long enough that you didn't just get an unrelenting stream of co-op sessions if you put a sign down in Anor Londo, I used to use co-op as a means to pace studying and homework. On average, about 5 minutes would elapse between sessions, and most sessions would take 5 minutes as well. During co-op, I'd have time to mull over whatever problem I had last challenged before the session began. It was actually quite an effective strategy that got some pretty good results, but I could never replicate it in the other two games.

well i mean your playing a game about japanese pop idols, so that's probably embarrassing enough

for real though, i haven't noticed anything that's obviously censored, then again I haven't looked into the japanese version at all really

i mean, there's a lot of sexual outfits

and one character implicitly solicited another for sex

apparently Atlus handled the localization of the game, and the changes they made were pretty much just to make it more enjoyable to a western audience, "what is normal in one region could be considered thoughtless in another" or something like that

they said something along the lines of "nothing we changed infringes on the original intent of our creation" or something like that

now i'm just thinking of how they changed a couple of things in the previous games. like how the support for ken in P3P apparently came off as pretty creepy in japanese, so they watered it down a lot in the english dub. wonder if that would have stirred some **** if P3P came out this year instead of like, 5 years ago

I ride the train to work every day so I can get further in casual portable runthroughs than I normally would on consoles (I have like no patience for console games anymore unless its something I'm super into.) Its easy to zone out and get lost/grind when you're stuck on a train for like a cumulative hour a day.

finished TMS #FE at 98 hours, that move by the final boss wasn't as bad as I recalled the first time through, just had to protect myself better

I'd say it's a pretty good game. It's writing isn't perhaps the greatest, but it's still pretty good, especially given the ridiculous premise

I'd recommend it, as long as you can tolerate ANIME, j-pop, and persona-like elements of gameplay

Was the 98 hours with you doing as much as you can or is the game just super long?

It consisted of me going out of the way to complete all the non-repeatable requests and side stories (though not completing the side stories is a bad idea, they give you good stuff)

There was a part of it that was me grinding for a little bit because I got a little too hasty and skipped fights, ending up underleveled. Also grinding for skills that are not really mandatory, but still nice to have.

And there are a few hours that were me leaving the game on while taking a shower or eating food or something

i'm a lazy bastard is the thing

i suppose i can try for more regular updates to this thread

I've been playing through the Dark Forces series on steam. So far I've finished Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, and Mysteries of the Sith. Never registered with me just how obtuse these old videogames can be, but overall I've enjoyed my time with them. On Jedi Outcast now, and for some reason I'm just not feeling it as much. I didn't play that one as much when I was younger, so maybe the lack of nostalgia is the key factor here.

Also finished Broforce yesterday. Never before have I ever felt so proud to be an American. Definitely one of the more fun indie games I've played.

Nice, probably the best one.

in 3 i was so bad at the final boss that every pikmin i had that wasn't a rock pikmin was killed in the fight so i presume this means when my space guys left the rock pikmin took over the niche space and became massively overpopulated, eventually destroying the entire ecosystem
