Ultimate Paradise

In an effort to get me to get back here daily/more often, here's a game topic! Its also a way to keep me somewhat sane while the work and class combo wears away at me.

SFV came out and I've only gotten a chance to play it once but I dig the feel. I'm not sure if I like it more than IV yet from a mechanics perspective, but I dig the V-Trigger and actions a lot. I'm excited to play more of it. Its also served as a way to show me that I'm pretty much divorced from what's considered good or important in a game anymore because the lack of modes for full price thing didn't bother me in the slightest. I get why people are mad and I'm not even saying they're wrong for feeling like its not worth the money, I just don't even remotely care.

I completed the Souls and Pals playthrough recently to prepare for Dark Souls III, including lots of thrilling co-op with Youef and Random where they helped me beat the game with my hilariously shitty build. I look forward to when the game drops in Japan so I can scour every possible piece of boss information since I can't wait much longer. That's been about it console wise. Its been all handheld and a little old PC games. I'm at the very end of Paper Jam, and while its got a bit of unneeded padding I dug it a lot, mostly on the strength of its battle system and boss fights. Conquest is good so far. All of these games are basically just holding me over until the release of an old ass Game Boy game that has me unreasonably excited and for SMT IV Final to not come out.

man, i noticed how sketchy juri was when she debuted. lots of people were going "oh man, first korean character in SFV" and I could only think "she's an insane sadomasochist and she's korean. yeah, real cute, capcom."

I haven't played with him yet but I do think he's supposed to be Chinese. He's listed as Unknown in terms of birthplace though so who knows.

Current roster of mains for SF is Karin, Bison, Cammy and Charlie. I want to see Bison is my best, but I've honestly only played my friend and a few stray online battles with Karin, so it might just be my friend is really bad and predicting which Bison move I'm going to do and he gets flustered.

Going directly from the endgame of Conquest to the beginning of Birthright sure did give me whiplash.

MORE IMPORTANTLY Red Version is out on 3DS and I am using a team of Pokemon assigned to me from a friend. I will never not love this game. Only three of the six have been assembled but so far Dodrio is the star and tearing things to shreds. Primeape ain't bad but misses all the goddamn time and Graveller needs to be traded to unlock true radness.

Beat Birthright last night. Was fine, although I preferred Conquest a lot more, mostly because a few of the maps are now ingrained into my subconscious and also because the Nohr dudes and ladies were generally better. There weren't any Takumis on that side. Started Revelation but may take some time before delving into that one just to keep from burning out. Super Mario World needs me afterall.

And now for what you guys REALLY came here for; arbitrary musings on slasher films and rankings! I watched the first four Friday the 13th films this weekend for reasons even I am unsure of. Maybe it was to fix a huge gap in my knowledge. I love me some horror but up until this point I had never seen a full Friday the 13th film. My relationship with the series is odd in that I was introduced to it not through the movies or even games, toys, comics etc but through (I kid you not) fanfiction a babysitter of mine wrote when I was like five or six. So maybe I always tied it together mentally with fanfiction and thus avoided it. I also had my first summer camp at the place the first movie was filmed and had a miserable time, although I wasn't axe murdered so there's that. I suppose I considered it my duty as a New Jersian to watch the films.

What really interested me was the fact that much of the knowledge people have of the series clouds what it actually is. Everyone knows Jason Voorhees is the hockey mask machete guy, but it takes like four films for him to get to that point and even then he doesn't really become "Jason Voorhees unstoppable superkiller" until the sixth one. I like to think that adds to the series since at its heart its really a movie series about campfire legends coming true, so having the films and whats in them be passed down and changed in the telling is a nice little wacky coincidence. None of them are great except for Final Chapter (II is close but the TWELVE MINUTE STOCK FOOTAGE AND OPENING and bad ending bring it down) but only III was "man this is a drag why am I watching this" bad. I'll continue on this cinematic quest in due time but this weekend is all about The Good  The Bad and The Ugly on the big screen and eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee i can't wait

Do you have any interest in that new Friday the 13th game that got kickstarted? I heard Adam Sessler talking about it on a podcast I listen to, and it sounds like it's being made by some real fans of the series. I know it's one of those asymmetric multiplayer games, but it still sounded pretty cool as a theory.

I think there's a really cool game there. I haven't followed it closely but I remember hearing the announcement that it got the license, so I'll definitely be waiting to see what they do once it gets closer to release. I probably would prefer a non-multiplayer game but that also makes sense given the material.

I don't have the file on me to check exactly but I'm pretty sure Leo, Camilla and Keaton were the tops. They certainly were my go to units, especially near the end where Camilla suicide missions gave me the win in a lot of the later maps.

Dread Fighter Arthur does sound like something that was sorely lacking in my life.

Haven't started Revelation yet. I've been mostly playing Super Mario World and doing miserably. I kind of wish you all could see me play 2D platformers and understand what a comedy of errors it is. I think I have like two castles left and then Bowser. Hoping my loser friend gets Pokemon soon so I can start back up on that adventure. And most importantly, we're closing in on one month left until Dark Souls III. It will be the longest month of my life.

I've been on a big Exorcist kick recently. My brother had never seen the first one somehow so we watched it a few weeks ago and its still sticking with me (I've seen it before of course.) Its a movie I completely dreaded when I was younger, and I'm glad I did because there's so much I wouldn't have gotten out of it. I want to track down the sequel because I'm told its one of the worst films ever made and the trailers seem to support this. Look at this shit;

That being said, I just watched Exorcist III for the first time and it gets the Floyd Seal of Horror Approval. Patton yelling at people, Brad Dourif being FUCKING AMAZING and one of the legitimately most terrifying scenes I've ever seen in a movie. If it didn't have a completely tacked on and nonsense ending it would almost be on equal footing with the first one.

I watched The Exorcist when I was 10 and was afraid I would get possessed for pretty much a whole year after that.

I literally dreaded it when I was younger. I was a huge coward up until like 15 or 16 so even the mere mention of someone watching that movie was enough to scare me away.

Spent National Mario Day the only way I know how; not doing a final paper and beating Super Mario World after multiple excruciating attempts at doing so.

I promised a friend to play with him so I'm getting it on Xbox first but I am almsot assuredly getting it for PS4 down the road for random and youef co-op so in due time Mattress, in due time.

In order to prepare myself for Dark III, I took to another game of great difficulty for me that I've never beaten and started up a Zelda II file. The last time I tried playing was on 3DS and I could not for the life of me get past Death Mountain so I only beat one palace. Like, I was completely broken by this game. I can beat Dracula's Curse with enough patience but this did it for me. I bought an actual NES copy a few months ago since I have nothing better to do but waste money on games I figured having an actual physical copy would be a good incentive to try and beat it.

I'll be damned if it isn't working. I've beaten three palaces and am almost max level for each stat, mostly because I was grinding incessantly to try and be ready for Death Mountain and Spectacle Rock. I've found that if it wasn't for the fact that the game has a life system with only four, non-permanent ways to raise your life count, I'd like it a hell of a lot more. Like, top ten Zelda experience. Its fucking tough but there's something about the combat I really dig, especially after you get the Downward Thrust. It'll never happen since we got two 2D Zeldas on one system and that's a rare gift, but I'd love a ALBW style sequel/spiritual successor that lacks a life system and maybe jazzes up the bosses a bit (I do love you still though Horsehead, if only because your name is Horsehead.)

Last night I went to see The Good, the Bad and the Ugly again at a theater that does weekly showings of classic movies. I went on Sunday by myself but my brother wanted to go since he was unable to on Sunday. I'll never turn down a chance to watch TGTB&TU. When we got there, an older gentleman also arrived and started talking about how much he loved it, aspect ratios, transfers and other stuff. I usually hear a lot of this from the film group I go to in Philly (the ones that do horror movie marathons and other similar things) but it was really weird because it was like looking at myself in maybe 30 or 40 years. I can imagine I'll be going to the 50th anniversary showing of Jurassic Park and talking to teenagers/20 year olds about it in the same wacky way.

Okay so bad new character aside what's important here is that a leak from awhile ago is all but confirmed as legit or semi legit, consider this new character was on it. This is both good news because there's some cool characters and some of the descriptions of the new characters sound good and also bad because it means the best KoF character is not on it, but more good than bad.

The "run outside a palisade while Lizalfos throw rocks at you with different speeds and trajectories while also fighting Lizalfos on the ground" section is enough to make me weep. The unicorn head looking things are like Medusa Heads from the original Castlevania if they had projectiles and were quicker and more unpredictable.

This game hates me.

Yeah. Salt is one of those games where you probably don't even feel flattered that it's copying you and instead you feel offended. It's almost as if they didn't have the creative capacity to do anything of their own merit (so far) and that's just the honest truth.

Zelda II is sapping my will to live so instead its Daredevil time. I banged out five episodes. Its good so far although I have generally preferred the first season. Part of this is because I've never liked the Punisher, even though his portrayal here is really good (especially one scene in season 4.) It reminds me I should try to watch Jessica Jones at some point too but that show didn't grab me right away like Daredevil did, so it might be good to wait until I'm less busy for that.

The Daredevil is watched and the Zelda II is beaten. I feel like I need to go smoke a cigarette* or something to calm my nerves because the final dungeon in a nerve wracking experience.

How was DD?

Overall still good. I personally found it less even than the first season. The first two episodes were just kind of there and the last one felt weirdly rushed after a really good 12th episode that wrapped a lot up. That said when its good its probably better than season 1. I don't really like the Punisher that much but the show had probably the best version of the character, the Elektra stuff was mostly really good and the hints at where the show will go from here if there's a third season (I suspect there will be) have me excited.

Nice. I don't think I'll binge it, but I will probably watch it soon enough.

New sand guy looks great. The "drop a bunch of sand on top of people and "throw sand in their face" moves look delightful.

I can't help but think about how many cool games never saw the light of day or finished development that are lost to time. There's probably some serious top tier level games that are boxed away somewhere and lost to company mergers and such.

Earthbound on the 3DS is nice since I've never been able to sit down and play it on the Wii U. Its keeping me sane until roughly 6pm tomorrow, but I don't know if I'll be able to make it through work without backstabbing someone. I already have my build pretty much planned and ready. The time is nigh.

Finally beat Pontiff Sulyvahn today after weeping and failing miserably multiple times. I will probably never fight that boss solo again.

Just got through Dancer of the Boreal Valley after probably an hour or so of trying, now its just general environments.

now i'm reminded of the time I derped up and spent 10 minutes dying to the same greatsword knight in Lothric Castle. Those guys are jerks. Think I had a harder time killing any one of them than I did with most bosses lol

Haven't had a chance to play past this weekend, but I'm currently on The Nameless King, who is either really tough or I'm just in awe every time I fight him so I screw up. Haven't thrown myself at him much yet but he's already the Ludwig of the game and I mean that in the best possible way. My buddy recent;y picked it up and will likely want to coop, so that may slow my "beat the game right away" quest but I'm cool with that. Only one Lord remains as of right now.

In portable news I got Bravely Second. At first I wasn't feeling it, mostly because I couldn't remember if Default started quickly or not but this one seemed to be a much slower crawl. Now that I have some jobs available I'm getting more drawn into it so ideally the story stuff will fall off so I can go back to crushing things with some idiotic job combo.

After experiencing Bloodborne levels of existential "I can't do this what am I doing with my life" dread I was able to finally slay The Nameless King. I fought the first form so many times I was routinely perfecting it before getting the swordspear shoved up my ass in the second round. Before doing that I also ran through Lothric Castle rather than fight anything and beat Dragonslayer Armor, which I quite enjoyed. I've done a few rounds with the Princes but no such luck yet, but I'm hoping to beat the game this weekend maybe although probably not.

i added up all of my boss deaths and the number of times i died to the Nameless King exceeded the number of times i died to every boss prior combined

yeah that seems like a reasonable assumption for me as well, i feel like it took about a fifth of my total game's run time so far to beat it

I have beaten Dark Souls III. I felt the love I felt for the first game flowing through my veins once again in the final stretch. I think that, overall, I found the game a bit too difficult for my liking, but this might be simply because I don't have as much time to play console games anymore so to spend a lot of the 36 hour run time feeling frustrated made it feel worse than it was. This problem aside, it was a delightful game, and I earnestly hope that DLC aside they're done with the Souls formula; the ending felt so final and fitting that even another Bloodborne or Nanosouls or something would be a bit "hrm" to me even though I'd doubtlessly buy it.

Given how much this game sold, there will undoubtedly be another Souls game. I just hope they take a break from it and do something else. I'd like to see something new from From.

It's about time for another Armored Core game, I guess.

I dunno, it seems like From just cannot get its shit together to the same degree for anything that isn't Dark Souls. For however hard it is, it does have a linear progression model insofar as it's all about "play well to win" rather than how Armored Core has a quadratic model where it combines a similar level of difficulty with "wrestle through all of these parts and hope you make something good out of them such that you can play well in the first place". Even Miyazaki can't salvage that -- he directed Armored Core 4 and 4 Answer, the shittiest games in the series lol. And I kind of think they understand that. They'll stick to the model or revamp existing, similar products to function in the same manner as Dark Souls. I just hope they spend some time on whatever they make next.

I think it's about time for another Lost Kingdoms game.

The news of the Wii U's imminent demise and the new Zelda getting the TP treatment spurned me to play Wind Waker HD. I've had had it since I got the console but haven't played it yet, and so far all I've done is use the message in a bottle thing to send terrible doodles of minor comic characters to unsuspecting victims. I have TP HD as well so I'll play that afterward to be ready for whatever the Wii U version of the game (always go with the original version, Gamecube TP is the true version Wii version can beat it) ends up being.

Moved through the second dungeon of Wind Waker. One thing I never noticed is the music in the Forest Haven has little callbacks to OoT songs and it made me smile. Its taken a little time for me to get used to the Wii U controls. I've played Wind Waker too much in the past so I keep fucking up the different controls and the camera and such.

I can't over do how much i dig the Tingle Bottles though. My favorite part of the Wind Waker was always the overworld and finding the islands and filling out the chart, so having these little messages floating out there just adds to that. And you get these often babbling incoherent messages so I picture this crazed dying sailor tossing messages out. Its almost like the messages in Souls but with more freedom to post whatever. I've currently on that post sickness haze and feeling wacky. Last night was the height of this so before bed I decided to watch Eraserhead to try and freak the sickness out of me. It didn't work, but the movie really made me feel like playing some Silent Hill again with its dirty ass industrial setting and radiator soundtrack. I might pop the first one in after Wind Waker since its like a five hour game.

On the subject of Wind Waker, I'm on the Triforce hunt and its nice to see that they tinkered with it considering in the original it was the biggest slog to exist.

I always took the triforce part as my cue to go fill out the map because I figured if it was going to send me on such an errand like that anyway, I might as well collect everything at once.

Makes sense. I usually end up getting the map mostly complete (in this case all complete) before that just through moving around to where you need to go beforehand. The money you have to pay for the charts to be deciphered was also what usually drove me nuts. Even with the biggest wallet and not spending a lot it was an asinine amount.

The Ganondorf fight usually gets all the praise but man Puppet Ganon is such a good **** fight. I went in under prepared this time in terms of hearts/magic meter and it was a real tense fight.

The first game always gets a lot of credit for utilizing the limits of the PS1 to make the game scarier, namely the draw distance and darkness, but I don't think the FMVs get enough love. The one's in 2 are even better, but every one of them looks weird and creepy in a way only FMVs can be.

Played some more of it at my buddy's house since he has his copy. Still a blast. I think I'm going to try Hanzo some more, I dug the arrow switching a lot even though I'm generally not a big sniper guy. And most importantly I won the two games I played while my loser buddy lost the games he played.

Today is a day I have been waiting for for some time, probably around a year. My brother and I are going to Barcade, which is exactly what it sounds like. I don't drink much/at all but having what is otherwise a fully functioning arcade is too good for me to ignore, and their game selection is not only exquisite (there's a NeoGeo machine with Samurai Shodown II!) its changed a bit from when I was there last year, which pleases me. I'm not sure I'm prepared to waste like ten dollars trying to beat Onslaught in MvC, but Die Hard Arcade is there and I've never beaten that so maybe that will be the goal today.

beat dracula x (the snes version) for the first time today, didn't save any of the girls because i wanted to fight carmilla

its not as bad as its reputation suggests but jesus it has some wonky enemy hitboxes and the final fight where you have to jump across pillars while attempting to hit dracula in the one second window you have while also not getting hit because the knockback will kill you 9/10 is really frustrating

I keep feeling that any game I play right now though is a distraction to keep my mind off of the fact that Overwatch still isn't her yet. I probably should have ignored my usual desire for physical ownership in this case.

on Ilios there was a Genji chasing Floyd's Roadhog and somehow he inadvertently and perfectly evaded most of Genji's shuriken which led to the Genji doing his charging sword and flying off the cliff.

At one point I had a one on one duel as Hanzo with a Roadhog and it was the sickest thing ever. He kept chaining me and I would hold him back with ricochet arrows, he'd heal, and thankfully a Mercy came in to even the odds. It last like a legit minute. We lost the match but I won that so I felt okay.

I have at long last played the Bloodstained demo that came with my ludicrous and generous donation and I am pretty happy so far with it. Most of my problems were based on the shitty keyboard controls and not the game itself. If it lives up to the pedigree I think I'll be weeping tears of joy and blood at the same time throughout the game.

1. Burning through my annual/biannual Link's Awakening runthrough. Still the best game to exist other than maybe MM and definitely SotN. Last time I played I got 100 of the hearts but deprived myself of the tunic and sword upgrades. This time I'm just kind of blazing through it. Still no deaths, going for the special ending as usual. About to get to Eagle's Tower which for me is the highlight of the game.

2. Played Overwatch for the first time in awhile with my buddies last night. We did fine (not ranked) until the last two games where we fought against some prestiged or whatever plays and I've never seen a more awful massacre. I honestly don't think a second went by where justice wasn't raining from above. It sacred me off from even trying ranked.

3. I picked up Suikoden I-III on a PSN sale last week. I've been meaning to give them a shot for awhile now as they form probably the largest gap in my Konami play experience. No idea when I'll actually getting around to playing them since I need to dig up the PS3 to play them (why is there no PS1 Classics on PS4?) but maybe this week/weekend.

I'm not convinced ranked is terribly fun, even if you can pair up with a few people. I tried it with a team of 4 on Saturday night, and through 3 attempts at playing, one of the randos on our team left each time. There's some serious problems that they need to sort out with that.

Even then, I'm wondering if the spirit of the game that made me enjoy it in the first place is better contained within quick play.

Ranked play in most things usually is too much for me anyway. I think BlazBlue was the only game I ever seriously put effort into doing well in the ranked mode. Its more fun for me to constantly lose with less pressure but more "oh man I stopped that DIE DIE DIE Reaper with a flashbang to the face cool" moments.

I've heard it has to do with licensing, but it's still honestly beyond frustrating.

I stalked a Psyduck and a Nidoranne around my apartment complex for 10 minutes when I got home before a) deciding I looked too weird to all of the people driving through and b) concluding they were holed up in the construction site next door. Bitter about that.

Fortunately I had an egg hatch on the way home that turned into a Bulbasaur, so screw people who say you don't get anything worthwhile from 2km eggs.

My best eggs have all been 2km eggs so those people are fools.

As is usually the case when I play a Zelda, I immediately feel the need to play more/all of them. Rather than play one I really like though I decided on Link to the Past. I'm just past the Palace of Darkness so the game has finally gotten good. Its funny to see how the series is criticized (often rightly) for the long openings, but LttP has its own opening slog since the first three dungeons are a big bore and nothing has any real interest until you get sent to the Dark World. I also still feel your sword range is too short. I basically consistently go "I wish there was a game with this OST and world but better" and then I remember Link's Awakening and A Link Between Worlds exist.

i don't hate the game and its obviously the most influential game on the series itself but its definitely a lower tier entry for me and the overwhelming and frankly hyperbolic praise it gets always feels weird to me, several of my friends really dislike ocarina and zelda in general and i feel like this is what its like for them to hear me talk about those games

also three of the goddamn bosses are eyes and two are worms and that's very frustrating because when the bosses in the game are good they're great and awesome and cool but nope got fight fuckin' KHOLDSTARE the ice eye in case you got tired of the eye fight

Well, I might like it more than Ages, as that game had some sections that drove me berserk in a bad way, but Seasons is the bees knees and if you do the combined package thing it definitely tops LttP for me. ALBW might top them all but LA though. Its close at the very least.

A Link to the Past has been beaten. One thing it definitely has going for it is an awesome final boss. One of the best in the series actually. Its probably the one area where it trounces its sequel/successor/whatever A Link Between Worlds is.

I put some time into it the other night while I had a minute. Feels good so far. I've always been real bad at KoF so this will probably be more of the same but its fun and the roster is mostly hits (I miss a few characters though.) Its probably my most anticipated game right now, that or SMT IV:A.

I haven't been keeping up, but have you played Revelator yet? I'm only on PC, so I have to wait like six months before they put it up on steam once they announce the next upgrade.

I wish I could play the KoF demo. I still think it looks as fun as KoF usually is for myself, I really don't mind the graphics like some people do.

I didn't play Revelator yet. I had picked up Xrd's vanilla release when it came out and played a few games with a friend, found it fun and definitely very Guilty Gear.

I don't particularly mind the graphics either. Even when it was first announced I didn't feel like it was a deal breaker, and they look a lot better now than they did. Nothing particularly gorgeous but nothing distracting which is all I really need.

An Aerodactyl silhouette was spotted while I was walking to work today. I've never been more tempted to completely abandon the day and search for something in my life.

A Growlithe and Snorlax popped up soon after I got to work. Frustrating.

No Snorlax sightings at all. I won't be able to stop playing this until I have one.

Finally got a 10km egg. I'm looking forward to it being another Pinsir and throwing my phone across the room.

My first was an Eevee. Second was a low-powered Onix. Got a little less than 3km until I find out the disappointment of this next one.

Also I was in a place this weekend that kept showing me multiple Charmanders under "nearby" and yet I didn't encounter a single one.

I'd be fine with an Onix since I don't have one yet. I'm hoping against hope for an Aerodactyl or Snorlax.

The newest game on mine is from 2011 and as of right now I don;t think there's any console games from this gen I'd consider a favorite ever thought here's some I've dug a lot. Some 3DS games come closer.

like, i can think of a few ideas for an online "MGS game". you don't even need characters or a plot, just take the forward base thing from MGSV and expand it into a clan wars kind of deal, flesh that idea out into a full title. bill it as a spinoff -- such an idea is in continuity with a number of elements and themes in MGSV. that's not gonna change anyone's mind about konami or mend their public image, but you could sell that idea without accumulating even more enmity than before.

i refuse to believe that idea wasn't pitched at some point. it's obvious, it's a simple idea to contextualize, it's an expansion of an idea that has already been implemented, etc. but they still chose something completely incongruous as l4d to slap the metal gear name to lol

i'm a little mad they didn't even try to incorporate skateboarding like in mgs2 really, if they're gonna do wacky spin off games with stuff make it something cooler than left 4 dead

Grab the MGS Legacy Collection, its got all of them I think and there's bound to be at least one of them that you'll dig a lot since the main grouping of games is so good.

There is a good chance the girlfriend's brother owns that, I'll have to check with him to see if we can borrow it. I've got the new Persona game and Horizon Zero Dawn pre-ordered, I should probably wait until I have those paid off before I get anything else haha.

Also I second that thought about Yoshi's Island.

KoF XIV comes out next week. I am of course wasting money on getting the super special edition with the CD of music I can't put in my car because of the Mai artwork on the sleeve. A friend of mine got it early and has been informing me about it. I loved (LOVED) XIII but no one played it with me so I'm hoping to put more time into this one. It definitely doesn't look as good as XIII, but no fighting game that ever existed does (maybe Vampire Savior in its day, I'm partial to how expressive and goofy those animations were) but the roster is better and it plays fine if the demo is any indication. And if the rumor/leak of planned DLC fighters is true I'll be even happier. Now just make Samurai Shodown VII and we're really back in business.

UNNECESSARY SIDE NOTE

Recently one of my favorite comic characters was confirmed to be comic back from a six or so year death. At around the same time, another one who's fate was sort of ambiguous was confirmed dead. I can only have things in balance it seems between "its back and cool" and "its not happening" and with Treasure seemingly twiddling their thumbs and no real Castlevania coming out ever (I love you though Bloodstained) it looks like this holds true for games as well. SNK lives while Treasure sleeps.

I gave into my temptations and started up Metroid Prime again. I am pleased to report it is still one of the best things ever and the mere act of running and jumping around still fills me with glee. Just got the Ice Beam.

So KoF XIV is out and I have played it. I've gotten all the endings and played some online matches with mixed results. The patch to fix slowdown should be coming soon but its only really messed up one of my matches where I can hear the person on the other end furiously tapping away at his fight stick and complaining until he gave up and spammed Athena Psycho Balls which i had no counter for with the slowdown. Other matches have just involved me being wiped out completely and utterly. I need to work on that; I've always been real bad at KoF despite my love for it. I'm excited to see what direction they take roster wise with the DLC/sequels based on how the story went.

KoF has taken up most of my other game time so Metroid Prime has suffered but I'll get back to it soon. On a coworkers suggestion I bought Reigns on my phone and I'm really enjoying it. It reminds me somewhat of Papers, Please only less stressful (so not quite as good?) and more conducive to plays since its on my phone. None of my reigns have been super long because I rush things, which shows why I should never be allowed to take control of anything. I think I've had merchants take control of the kingdom and kill me twice now.

SMT IV Apocalypse! I really like it! I ended up moving a head slightly and wasted all my money grinding near a heal spot so I'm a bit overleveled I think. About to face Shesha for the first time.

Game Boy Advance adventure! I felt a wave of nostalgia for the old system a few weeks ago and it became worse when I realized none of mine work anymore so I've just been playing whats available on the Wii U, namely Circle of the Moon and Advance Wars. Stuck at a tough AW battle so my focus has been elsewhere. I never beat Circle of the Moon and I'm a little bit past where I usually stop off so hey new Castlevania material! And with Bloodstained delayed that's something that I won't have for awhile so I should treasure this.

Finally, I picked up Severed now that its available on a console I own. I'm completely entranced by this game. Not sure if its the unique art style, the lack of much exposition or the gameplay but I keep thinking about it long after I put it down. Truly fascinating to me.

Starting off October right by beating two Castlevania games I've never beatn (the aforementioned Circle of the Moon and also Belmont's Revenge.) Both are notable for having really tough Dracula fights, although one is cool and interesting (CotM) and the other is boring pattern recognition with no variation at all (BR.) That said I think I might like BR a bit more overall. It took a lot of the more esoteric stuff from The Adventure (the worst CV game) and put them in a game that actually isn't a chore to play. Its neat.

So the Overwatch Halloween costumes are super neat (I especially like Ana, Hanzo, Junkrat, Mercy, Reaper, Roadhog and Symmetra's costumes) but come on yo Blizzard why not add some Diablo, you're trying to tell me no one was like "yeah make Roadhog the Butcher and Reinhardt the Skeleton King" what the fuck is going on with you guys.

REGARDLESS I'll probably start playing again to try and get some and then get more D.Va Taunts I'll never use.

The Horde mode thing is pretty fun, and yeah the skins are great. The lack of Van Helsing McCree seems like a missed opportunity, though.

Got a little bit of DS3 play time in before Horrorthon this weekend and I dig it. It might be my favorite snow area in the games from an aesthetic and enemy design stand point. I'm also not as rusty as I thought I'd be. No bosses yet. I'm going to Disney next week for a big family vacation thing/to stave off the existential dread of the looming possibility of a Donald Trump presidency so I won't be able to play for awhile but its short so I guess that doesn't matter too much.

Some friends and I compile a list of the games we've beaten throughout the year. I'm at 49 (mostly handheld games and some arcade games to pad the length like the dirty sneak I am.) I beat Twilight Princess HD today since I hadn't started it since getting it. Looking back at the list, I see the 24th game I beat was Wind Waker HD and after that was Silent Hill, so looks like its time to boot up Silent Hill 3 for the first time in years. My memory of the game is positive albeit murky; I only really clearly remember a few set pieces so it should be a good six or so hour playthrough.

well, adding 3ds games isn't really cheating, they prolly make up half of the games i beat this year. not a whole lot of interesting games on consoles, but a ton on the **** 3ds lol

mostly i either just started a bunch of games and quit them after a few hours, played the same game multiple times (hey, if i beat dark souls 3 4 times, does that put me half-way there?) or played MMOs (beat the main, pre-expansion bit of FFXIV three times!)

I mostly consider them cheats because a lot of the games I play on there are ones I've beaten before (Majora's Mask and Ocarina versions, SNES games, etc.) which usually end up being shorter than a console game released today (I think? I don't play many whoops.) Local bar/arcade place helps as well since there's a ton of beaten em ups there I can dump quarters in.

Silent Hill 3 is still really scary. I forgot how long it takes you to get the flashlight compared to other games and how many pitch black hallways with monster dogs they make you run through to get it.

i mean, i haven't beaten that many games this year, but i've probably spent more time playing games in general this year than over the last couple of years. finals week is coming up, and here I am playing FFXIV

Video games are still largely where my free time goes, so I'm sure I've finished a lot (whereas anime has been completely sidelined, I think I finished watching one show this year)

Playing Overwatch for the first time since the big update. I really dig the Winter Mystery thing, its been helping me try other characters without knowing for sure I'll get crushed because everyone else is getting random characters too. I like Sombra a lot. I might actually try to learn her once the event is done.

Did some arcade and was mostly crushed, although I did 3-0 one guy named genjigalore, who ragequit before the match could finish, possibly because the match he just lost was a Genji match.

Tonight is the annual "my buddy is back in town from LA, time to play Smash" night. I went to check to make sure everything was up to date and I legitimately forgot that they added the Fates protag and Bayonetta whoops. Guess I'll be learning how they play tonight while having people get passively aggressively mad since I'm bringing the Wii U and won't let one dork mess with my sound settings.

I think around this time last year I had a clear goal for games: beat all the Souls games (Bloodborne included) in the lead up to III. I don't even have any games I'm excited for right now since most got delayed or have nebulous release dates so I feel a lack of direct goals for a game I should be playing. I guess I have a giant backlog but I'm bad at managing that whoops.

Ideally I'll be finished up with Breath of the Wild by then so I can just sort of roll right into this and finish the other DLC as well. I played some of it when it came out but the timing wasn't great with class and all. End of March/Early April should be better.

It'll have been almost a year for me then, so that's a pretty good time to revisit the game and play both DLCs.

In an attempt to stave off me being interested in and buying full priced new release games I wasn't supposed to want I popped III back in and messed around with the DLC some more. I'm probably close to finishing it since I know its short, so I guess I'll maybe do that before the Switch and Ringed City. I have obtained a Switch. Its nifty and sleek.

I was a little skeptical about Breath of the Wild because I really don't like The Open World Game (or the Ubisoft game) all that much unless its in a setting that really sticks to me (Fallout, RDR, etc.) I expected it to be nice and big but lacking in meat on the bones. This is not the case thus far. I kept putting off sleeping to play it which is the first time I've done so for a game in awhile. There's some nitpicks I have about the controls/interface, but the game itself is filled with neat stuff to see and do and it does feel fun to just move around and explore. It's really quite extraordinary.

I have one more dungeon left. My biggest complaint is a serious lack of bosses but its good at pretty much everything else. I can imagine a lot of people will say this is their favorite game in the series moving forward and I could buy it, although I don't think I can ever divorce my intense personal love for the N64 and GBC games.

In any case, I feel torn between wanting to beat it before The Ringed City and Persona 5 but also wanting to stretch it out as long as I can. I feel like there's still stuff I've missed. I don't have any delusions of 100% this game but I want to see as much as I can.

I finally beat Sister Friede. I ended up summoning on my last ember and just came through. She's very fun in co-op but also jesus she's the hardest boss I've ever fought possibly. I can't imagine doing it solo, the closest I've ever gotten is like halfway through her final form.

Dark Souls III DLC is out and its a doozy. I just got past the first area that they showed off extensively and beat the first boss. Its a neat area and recalls what I liked about Oolacile in the first game's DLC; a sense of crumbling ruin.

I've beaten everything in The Ringed City save Darkeater Midir, who I haven't fought yet but have read he's a massive pool of HP and misery, like some freakish offspring of Kalameet and the Ancient Dragon. So right up my alley. Gael was a fun fight, not as hard as the demons but aggressive and tricky enough to give me several deaths before I finally put him down. Its somewhat fitting for the possible/likely last boss fight of a Souls content to basically be Guts. Really fun DLC, I blazed through it mostly because I didn't want to stop. Its making me excited for E3 as FS is supposedly working on three projects and I need more FS in my life. I hope they rip off Nioh for taking the Souls idea and putting in Japanese  mythology settings and make Otogi Souls although I am the only person this appeals to so that seem's unlikely.

I earnestly loved the demo that came with my PS1. That's the extent of my history with the franchise but I've considered playing the PS1 game at least.

hey i've been playing persona 5 and some gripes aside i really like it

I'm at the point where I feel like the game is starting to go "oh **** I guess we need to start moving towards an ending" since its starting to tell me to hang out with people while I can and things are happening rapidly. Pacing aside that's fine since I'm about ready to wrap it up as the game has been completely consuming my weekends without fail.

all of the spoilers I read about how mishandled that game was in plot, themes and some major character stuff (atlus, i wanted just one thing. you had all the tools to make that one thing happen, and you didn't) makes me just want to wait on P5: Crimson or whatever that's gonna be called for them to iron out at least some of that business, since i'll just end up re-buying it anyway if they do. but i dunno when that'll happen since it took something like 4 years for P4G.

I could see the updated re-release coming sooner. I don't remember what the P4 release was like but there's areas that definitely feel undercooked here and everyone is acknowledging it but at the same time what do i know about releasing and updating major video game releases.

it's weird, because FES came out less than a year after P3, but persona 4 golden took about 4 years. like, the amount of delays persona 5 had makes me wonder if atlus's main production team is starting to become too bloated to run efficiently. the persona series today is a helluva lot bigger than it was when persona 4 came out in japan in summer of 2008 such that they might try to get the updated installment out sooner, but i kinda get the feeling that it's harder for them to push something like that out than it was when they did p3, FES and p4 all within almost exactly two years.

not to mention that they've turn that series into a coiling abomination of a franchise so for all I know, the P5 update could be stalled by like, a P5 dating sim or something.

I really liked it, my favorite Persona and probably only behind SMT IV and Nocturne for my personal enjoyment scale. Had the same problem as a lot of the games where I get worn out by the end but the final boss was at least cooler than 3 and 4's even if it still wasn't all that hard. I'm definitely glad to be finished though; I put like close to 90s hours into this game, way more than I ever did for the previous games (Persona or SMT in general other than probably IV.)

Beat Injustice 2's story mode although I just skipped all the actual story content because I didn't care and just wanted to unlock Brainiac. Spent some time online with a buddy, its good fun and better than the first game for sure. Grodd and Captain Cold are very fun to use.

Tekken 7 is out! I am bad at it and I can't connect to random people online, but its fun! You throw a child into a volcano in story mode!

welp yesterday my flight was cancelled and a trip i planned for a few months had to be cancelled as a result so i was just in the right state of mind to buy crash n-sane trilogy

Its pretty one to one from what I've played (a bit of the first island of 1 and the first two warp zones of 3.) I have been dying to the turtles in one a lot more but I think thats getting used to the new graphics as they have what seems like different hitboxes. But its good so far and the music is nicely remixed, so as far as an impulse purchase made to stave off my misery its perfect.

Also its Steam sale time and I didn't get much but I did get this game Verdict Guilty for like 60 cents and its very neat. Its a Street Fighter II rip off with some unique ideas like handcuffing and stuff and the theme is very cool (its like a South Korean crime setting with an 80s film sort of drape over it.) Very cool surprise. Got Homeworld Collection too since I've never played them but no time for RTS games right now.

Remaster, yeah. I did beat finally finish it, just after a gross amount of deaths on The High Road and a few others.

cortex final boss theme is the good stuff

As soon as you hit The Lost City or Temple Ruins the game just suddenly becomes relentless, then it all accumulates into Slippery Climb wiping out your lives reserve.

It's hilarious remembering that an even harder version of that level was dummied out.

i replayed the original ps1 crash 1 like a week ago. like, it's not that unreasonable to play since it gives you a million lives in compensation for often you die, but I also insisted on getting all the gems which is somewhere between "huge pain in the ass" and "lol screw that" in difficulty. at least the remaster makes it so that you don't lose the chance of getting a gem if you die because fuck that noise

One month until Cuphead comes out and I enjoy video games again. Haven't been playing much, although I did recently start up a new Dark Souls II character to dick around with one weekend. I tried a sorcerer for the first time. I really like Dark Souls II still.

i've still never done a sorcery run. i always put in some stats into some kind of magic stat for weapon buffs because those are awesome in DS2, but sorcery feels so weak

I think I actually did a sorcerer run for Demon's once now that I remember but it was super, super easy so I haven't tried it since.

There was a sale for Capcom games on the fatboxonex so I gabbed RE7. I was seduced by feelings of sorrow at Tobe Hooper's death and was told this game was very TCM. Turns out that is correct and I really liked this game, despite it having one of the worst final bosses I've ever experienced. I think RE6 being so bad was a good thing almost. I haven't payed any attention to the series in years and having 7 sneak up and surprise me was nice.

less than a week away until cuphead brings light into my life

MvCI's story mode was very dumb and bad. I'm ready for fighting games to go back to not caring about story outside of "hey here's stuff that happened in between the games." The game itself is very fun though and the roster is small but filled with my favorites for the most part so I'm more into it than the average fighting game person right now.

Also Samus Returns is very good.

tbh I really wasn't expecting that build to actually be good so that was a pleasant surprise

I am happy to report that Cuphead rules ****. Its probably the most gorgeous looking video game I've ever seen. Its also definitely really hard (I'm at like 150 deaths I think) and the boss designs are super cool. It rules and everyone should get it on their steams and stuff.

Got the Souls pining in my blood this week so I popped in III and took a swing at Darkeater Midir. I had fought him a few times when The Ringed City came out but due to his massive amount of health I didn't make much progress. I finally beat him after basically studying his moveset to avoid getting hit like 65% of the time so I could remotely have a chance. Time off so I'm indulging myself in a playthrough of Paper Mario. Will probably to TTYD after. I've been trying to use different partners and badges than I normally do. My jump timing is also real bad. Still love this game, its in my top five and its filled with so much charm and fun and little things (your party members get fanmail!) On Chapter 4 now.

Also my local game store had its Black Friday sale today so I went and picked up some games. My friends have been yelling at me for not playing Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, so I grabbed that and Command and Conquer N64 because I have a nostalgic love for weird N64 RTS ports. But the crown jewel is Typing of the Dead with the keyboard. I never realized how hollow and meaningless my life was until I played Typing of the Dead.

The only two Paper Mario games they ever made sure were excellent.

sticker star had a few nice ideas, but the whole “consumable attacks” deal was kind of incredibly annoying to deal with.

I didn't mind that, and in fact I liked it a lot. Balancing resource allocation and management with combat made it a really weird little game and Color Splash improved on it a lot. I still much prefer 64 and TTYD but I think both games are worth playing and the over dramatic dismissal of them by Nintendo fans is pretty funny/dumb to me.

anyway HEY related news just beat Paper Mairo again and its still my favorite RPG. I noticed while starting that all my files are under 20 hours (mostly hovering around 17 hours or so.) I wish every RPG was as filled with great ideas and in such a comparatively lean package rather than like 80+ hour monstrosities (this includes a lot of games I really love too.) Probably wont start up The Thousand Year Door today but will def get on that. Should carry me until Christmas when I may get other games.

Also played some Typing of the Dead and its genius. Honestly might be the most fun I've had with a non fighting Dreamcast game. Its bonkers.

I'm a little surprised the servers lasted this long to begin with. I'm not a huge Demon's guy, but it gave me Dark Souls and set the groundwork for some games and memories that I'm extremely grateful for. I might have to put aside The Thousand Year Door and give it one final run.

One thing I kinda wish Capcom would do is port a few of their PSP games to Switch, the ones in particularly I want are Power Stone Collection, Mega Man Powered Up and Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX.

I  was given DOOM for Christmas on Switch. I'm not a big graphics or performance guy and didn't play it on PS4 or Xbone so I have no real frame of reference for how good a port it is, but the pure game itself is a blast. I thought I would get tired of crushing imp skulls after like the tenth time or so but nope its still extremely fun every time. There's a great sort of loop the game goes through with "shoot enemies, glory kills for health, chainsaw for ammo, repeat".

Also a supreme cool guy purchased me Heat Signature on Steam. I went in knowing nothing about it really but the first few exploratory steps are fun. It kind of feels like a fusion of Monaco and FTL, both games I enjoyed very much.

The runes you unlock will make that loop even more fun, depending on what you like doing the most, too.

I have not played either of those, but yeah I dig Heat Sig a lot. You're also getting in after the Fair Points update, which takes care of a lot of the sort of roadblocks you could hit before unlocking some of the better gear. Plus the missions with Glitchback guarantee are a fun way to go experiment.

My advice for just starting out is don't forget you can throw things by pressing T and also never stop pausing.

You can pause and then remote control your pod to come pick you up. Should be an option on the right.

I have been playing with headphones so I can hear the sounds of demons as I tear them apart. Favorite level would probably be Lazarus Labs because it has the Cyberdemon.

also smash night was a rousing success, played smash for essentially 7 hours straight and had lots of dumb laughs, everyone who bet music guy to annoy me was right but this time he showed up late, acting like he was better than us because he was sober (i have never been drunk in my life) and then also straight up smacked someone to try and get their attention to tell them about some youtube video he saw

Been playing Resident Evil Revelations, a game that has circled my "maybe Ill play that" list for awhile now. Got it on Switch because the collection includes a Ghosts 'N Goblins mini game where you play as Barry. I haven't played that yet though because I need a micro SD card for the system oops.

It feels episodic based on the chapters and the "PREVIOUSLY ON RE REVELATIONS" which is nice because I can pick up the Switch, play for an hour and feel accomplished, then let the Switch charge a bit and do something else. Its not like RE4 level or anything but its decently fun. The new characters are all laughably dumb, which is probably what I'd want out of an RE. Lots of one hit kill attacks though and the dodging mechanic is weird. I felt it was easier to just run fast and avoid attacks in 4 than the weird strafing shit it this one.

an associate tells me rev 2 is better so once i get the sd card and die in gng a lot, i'll check that out too

Replayed SotN this weekend, burned through it pretty quickly. Still the bestest. Did a double Fist of Tulkas run which made some bosses/enemies easier than normal and some a real pain. Would recommend.

A friend of mine has been pushing hard for me to get Monster Hunter World. I've never really been interested in the franchise for whatever reason but this one does look good, but I'm also hesitant to get a game that will require like 200 hours of effort. I feel like I could go either way with it.

I read about that game and feel like it sounds pretty ok, but whenever I watch gameplay I don't come away super convinced that it looks fun. Maybe it's one of those games that's more fun to play than it is to watch, though.

I'm not sure what switch flipped for me but up until this one that was my thought process with the series. I think this one looks a little better but again, I'm not entirely sure why. The same friend who's pushing now once super enthusiastically showed me his builds and stuff in Tri and I remember being bored as hell by what I saw. And its like mostly dinosaurs and dragons and shit, so it should be right up my alley.

I mean I also hated Demon's and Dark Souls for a while after they came out so I guess things can always change but I'm still conflicted.

I do like that the game tries to have a semblance of an ecology/randomness to it. Most games don't so I always appreciate it when a little effort is put in. Its cool and frustrating but mostly cool when I'm trying to fight a mid-sized monster and then a T-rex shows up to ruin everything because its hungry.

I picked up Into the Breach yesterday. I haven't played it yet because of Monster Hunter World, but I liked FTL despite never being able to finish it. I'm hearing this is even better so I'll be excited to play it.

On the MHW front, I finally hit a wall last week but I got past it pretty easily yesterday. I also did some multiplayer with the guy who got me to buy the game. Its still fun, although I don't think I'll put much time into it after I've beaten the main story (whenever the hell that is.) The last dragon thing I fought had a had to reminded me of a Gamera monster so it was neat.

On the final stretch of MGS1 (the temperature based keycard run.) Game is still my jam. The Vulcan Raven fight really stood out this time; its super intense and ramps up nicely by the end. I bought the GBC game as I've wanted to beat that for awhile now (only ever emulated it) and thinking about grabbing Legacy collection. One day I will beat 4, Peace Walker and Phantom Pain.

Some buddies of mine and I are also challenging each other to a sort of game book club thing where we download a game on Virtual Console and beat it then talk about it, preferably games that at least two people have not played. First game up is Drill Dozer which none of us have played. No idea if I will like it or not.

Drill Dozer is fun so far, its found ways to make one basic gameplay concept (you have a drill) and mix it up with platforming and exploring. If it stays the level of quality I think I'll be a pretty big fan of it.

went to california since my family was out there for a conference/vacation thing, i could only get a few days off but still got to go to the san diego zoo, get extremely sunburn and buy a bunch of weirdo dvds at amoeba records in LA which is one of the coolest places in the world, it was a good time but now i must go to work again

Been playing the GBC Metal Gear. Like all Metal Gears I am bad at it. Its really strong though, I'm impressed with how much of the style of the PS1 game they were able to capture/recreate here. Also, the hotel I stayed at had a little arcade. There were two big Sega cut outs on the walls but no Sega games. It did, however, have Dolphin Blue, which is a weird mid 2000s Metal Slug rip off that I put some time into. It was neat as hell.

Simon's Quest isn't garbage per se, the sh(http://)itty translation just really fu(http://)cked it horribly. It does have shitty things that a better translation wouldn't have helped though like invisible blocks and obviously the near-nonexistent bosses.

You had to actually beat Carmilla to get something iirc, still surprised she made an appearance in the Smash Castlevania stage.

I expected more invisible blocks but they weren't too prevalent. The worst part by far is when you try to get the diamond and have to jump across floating blocks above water. It requires the craziest level of precision I've ever seen in a platformer. I legit died like thirty times for a fucking subweapon I never used.

Been playing the old Soul games (fighting this time not action rpg oops) in anticipation of VI. Its really wild how much of a jump in quality Soul Calibur is from Soul Edge/Blade. Not that Edge is bad, but its middle tier early 3D fighting game and thoroughly outclassed by the Tekkens of the same time. Calibur is life changing. Once I clear arcade with everyone I think I'll have 100% the game and I'll move on to the higher plane of II.

Simon is so much fun. I'm not sure how good I am with him yet but he's a blast. I'm bad at recovery with him. There's nothing more satisfying than landing his Smash from far away when the opponent thought they were safe. Spirits mode is fun so far, I got Kid Dracula.

D&D happened last night and it was very fun. I'm using a barbarian so pure muscle for the first time and its very fun to completely destroy enemies in one swing right now. We're trying to do more backstory and actual roleplaying and it is hard to maintain a character voice.

I played the RE2 REmake 30 minute demo today. It seems pretty great. There's some new little things that the zombies do which they haven't before which surprised me, its dark and spooky and from memory they really nailed the look/layout of the old RE2 police HQ. Not sure if I'll grab it at launch but I'll probably get it down the road. Its cool to see RE being on top again after that down period.

Started Spyro 3 Reignited last night after celebrating the Eagles' demise. This is the first instance of them changing something for the worse; Sheila controls differently and it feels more restrictive and weird. I guess its a small thing but I'm worried that they'll have made all the side characters control weird this time which would make this more of a hassle than it needs to be.

I have beaten Spyro 3 Reignited and thus all of Reignited.

I didn't get as much in this one as I did in 1 or 2, mostly just enough to get to the final boss. Felt a little worn out on Spyros, but I'm glad I beat them all again. I have a lot of good memories of 2 and 3 back as a child and the new versions are solid, even if a few things are changed slightly in weird ways. I will def be getting the Crash Team Racing remake.

My friend also got me Kirby Planet Robobot for Christmas which I beat today too. My 3DS has a battery problem where the charge dies in like 30 minutes or so. I might need to look into fixing it, but it worked in this case because that's about how long a level or two would take me to 100%. Its a real fun game. Its not as good as the NES Kirby or Kirby 64 but its up there with the more fun entrees I've played.

So I guess RDR2 is next. I've been hesitant to start honestly; its so fucking big. I don't know if I have the time or even patience to finish it. But I gotta try. I've also been toying with playing Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time again and following each with the Koizumi written sequel that I like more to see if I can figure out why that's the case outside of Koizumi rules.

The Gnorcs used to use actual semi-automatic rifles with bullets and sh(http://)it, they changed it to the weird fruit guns in Reignited I'm assuming because of all the school shooting stuff that goes on these days. People still complained though because stuff.

When I saw the water and waves I literally screamed. I'm so excited. I just beat it again recently and that game really makes me feel such joy. I think the new style was a little jarring at first but I'm into it now. I can't wait to see what everything looks like and seeing those locations perfectly restored in a new style really threw me for a loop.

I've been playing Super Metroid. I've had a copy of it on SNES for years but my first experience was not great, mostly because it still has a degree of clunk that the NES original had (not to the same degree but enough) and I didn't feel like shooting every pixel to find where I needed to go. I'm enjoying it a lot more now, although that clunk is still around for the platforming. Someone this game came out a few years after Super Castlevania IV yet it has worse grapple mechanics. I like the GBA games more. The Wrecked Ship is great though, just got the Gravity Suit so time to find the water levels.

in substantially more embarrassing news I downloaded the DELUXE DEMO for DoA6 since it has every character but two and online play. My DoA experience online is 0 and I've only ever played the older games against the computer. I'm mostly getting my ass beat. The hold system is tough for me to get a hold of. That said, I got a certain flow going and can win some matches and when I'm not fighting some weirdo who uses Marie Rose and already knows every move and counter in the game, it can be a blast. The character designs are a little nicer for the most part this time around too other than the newer batch of characters which are real bad. I don't think I'm gonna buy it but if the second KoF DLC character is a good one I might keep an eye out for an inevitable all content bundle addition.

SM is so weird and floaty it's hard for me to go back to after ZM and Fusion.

Agreed. I miss the precision of movement you have in those games. Its just a lot more fun to move around in them and that's a huge deal for me in a Metroidvania game.

Anyway I beat SM. The Mother Brain stuff was really exceptional The floaty problem stayed more or less throughout the game for me, but I'm glad I finally got around to beating it. No idea what I'm gonna play in between now and Sekiro. Was considering Super Mario RPG to continue the "beat SNES games I think are good but not as good general consensus" theme but I'd have to buy it and also dust off the Wii U since I no longer have an SNES copy.

I am having an absolute blast with this game so far. Its still needlessly difficult to the point that its almost comical but when you know what you're doing you feel like a champion. The movement options are so much fun and it controls like a dream.

The new Samurai Shodown looks fantastic my dudes. Can not wait to get my hands on it. Roster is confirmed 16 characters with three new, so the returning characters are

Everyone from the first game but three, only one II newcomer and no one from III or IV. Did not expect Shiki, Tam Tam or Yoshitora at all. Hoping one of the new characters is monster-y since other than Tam Tam, there's no monster rep like Gen-an or Kusaregedo or even Basara. Hoping there's a cool boss too. 1-4 have some of the bets fighting game bosses.

Progressed a bit further in Sekiro. Some spoiler-y thoughts for the area I am now in:

-Long-Arm Centipede Giraffe gave me Capra Demon vibes. The small arena was a pain and there's no stealth option, its just mash L1 to deflect, attack, rinse repeat. Hated it.
-Finally got to the bottom of the Sunken Valley and there's the poison area, I knew you couldn't resist FromSoft.
-There is always a player, there's always a bridge, there's always a giant reptile.
-Guardian Ape is the most Souls-y boss yet, a big angry monster. It is also (not coincidentally?) giving me the most trouble of the main bosses so far. Firecrackers work obviously but they only do so much.

SamSho looks awesome.

Yup. I'm glad they kept that style. I know fighting game popularity is decided by "hype" and how many combos you can stirng together but I love a game that's focused almost entirely on one hit taking out a significant chunk of life. Its so different.

Footsies style gameplay is far more entertaining for me, there's less downtime where you're just waiting for your opponent to be done with their combo and I'd rather games be decided more on honest reads than simple execution.

MK11 also seems to be going down this route.

been stuck on the guardian ape fight for what feels like forever now

Finally beat it. I'm sure there's a more efficient and easier way than what I ended up doing. Probably my favorite boss so far despite my frustrations.

Now trying to figure out where to go next/what to do. Have vague instructions but I feel like I've explored everything available to me. Did some grinding in the interim and I think that's one area this game excels at. Grinding isn't as tedious. I remember grinding for vials and bullets in Bloodborne and wanting to die; here its always fun to move around and stealth kill and stuff so shooting for skill points isn't mind numbing.

Made lots of headway today before hitting a roadblock. I ended up going back to some areas and found the Ashina Depths, including another snake and the dried fruit thing. I did a little research and then killed big snake for the fresh fruit. I think this is ending related.

Imagine my horror after spending hours on the Guardian Ape only to find I have to fight the Headless Ape again and he summons another ape halfway through the fight. I have to assume these versions have less health because I beat them in a more reasonable timeline, but they still fucked me up a lot. I'm still dodging a lot rather than deflecting, which is honestly hysterical considering I used to be a completely shield based player in Dark 1 and 2. Bloodborne and 3 **** me up and now I have to try and undo that.

Beat some more minibosses and also the illusion Corrupted Monk, which was the easiest boss so far. What wasn't easy was Headless which sucked. I beat one finally but god its a bad fight. Slow and annoying. Not sure how many I'll go after. And yet that paled in comparison to Vilehand. I was getting absolutely shredded before I used Puppet Ninjitsu to make his croney fight against him. I still only barely beat him.

I am now on Great Shinobi Owl and he has destroyed me with ease in the first few fights. I think that's a good place to stop.

I fear my progress will be slowed big time friends. Wrestlemania weekend is upon us and its in NY/NJ this year, which means I am of course going. I have five shows to go to from Thursday-Sunday so I will obviously not be playing during that time. I fear the atrophy of my already meager skills will make getting back in tough, especially against the boss I'm currently stuck at.

Have fun, I don't have much hype for Mania this year but Takeover will probably be stellar despite Ciampa having to vacate the title.

Yeah Takeover looks spectacular. I'm so mad they moved it to Friday instead of Saturday, I have tickets for Joey Janela's Spring Break that night so I can't make it, but I've been to a Takeover before so I don't mind missing it to see Masashi Takeda live again.

I haven't been able to devote a ton of time with being busy and all but I think the card looks good with only one or two matches that I'm outright disinterested in. The one thing I'm extremely excited for is Kofi vs Bryan; I think its some of the most compelling stuff they've done with a main title in a long time and if Kofi wins I might ascend into the stratosphere. Its cool the women are main eventing, but the person i want to win has no chance so that's tempered my excitement a bit there.

I made a few moderately successful attempts at the boss I am stuck on in Sekiro last night. I kind of have the right idea of what to do with most of his moves in isolation, its just that it seems he strings them together really well. I managed to do one deathblow and get to the second form though on one run after only losing one gourd and death icon, so its not impossible just absurd.

Coming to terms with the fact that I don't think I will complete Sekiro. Its really great but I am not making any headway against this boss and there's still more to come. It feels like I finally hit a wall I can't surmount. I'm gonna keep trying, but I feel pretty certain I'm eventually going to just run out of available time.

Are you at the point where you're looking up strats? I'd look up strats if I was that confounded.

Whirlwind Slash and running away made the fight possible. Corrupted Monk shouldn't be as bad, hopefully. I cheese the illusion form with firecrackers so I don't have a basis of what to do when its got so much more health. I know you can sneak a few deathblows on it so I'll probably try that. I also have everything set and ready for one of the more obtuse endings, I believe, if I can muscle through. Its still feeling tough and I need to take more breaks than in the other games.

My cousin came over for Easter and brought his Switch so we played Smash. It was good to play again. Didn't get a chance to use Joker outside of arcade mode but he seems cool. I should play more, if any of you want to play let me know.

Put Sekiro away, signifying that I think I am done for now. I got to Fountainhead Palace and didn't have the patience to go on after a beam of energy from a miniboss I didn't see cut through walls and killed me. Overall, its an excellent game and possibly the best game they've done other than the first Dark Souls. I don't regret not feeling the urge to finish it though. With MK11 out this tomorrow I want to spend time on something else.

In the interim, I beat the first Super Mario Bros on Switch Online last night. I might beat 2 and 3 since I've never done so. I'm very bad at them so I used save states for the beginning of each level but did the levels in one shot.

Beat Paper Mario again last night. Still a nearly flawless game. Gonna try to beat all of them this year as I recently picked up SPM. I'm not sure if I want to start TTYD now or hold off since Bloodstained and Samurai Shodown are both coming out soonish. But then there's stuff after that too on Switch. I don't like having lots of games to play.

I ended up starting TTYD yesterday. I beat Chapter 2 so I'm looking forward to Chapter 3 bringing things back on track. I wonder how much of what makes Chapter 3 rule so much is a result of Chapter 1 being a basic (but good) retread of the first game and Chapter 2 being so bad.

Also hey NGE is on Neftlix this week. I think I'm gonna check it out. I never re-watched it after the like, 2010 maybe, viewing. I have fond memories of the pro-NGE and anti-NGE camps on the anime board yelling at each other. Really curious to see how this week being a living work nightmare affects the "this is about a mental breakdown" aspects of the show.

Some of my friends are gonna watch it for this first time. I'm not sure I'm ready for the takes and discourse that will inevitably follow.

Chapter 2 was also marred by the absolute worst partner addition in any Paper Mario game. I remember intentionally upgrading everyone but her, despite having the shine sprites, because I hated her so much.

However, Chapter 3 was genuinely one of the best segments of gaming for me period. There's like literally nothing wrong with it.

I really wonder what the potential of SPM could have been if they returned to the classic turn based combat. It probably had some of the best writing in a Paper Mario game. I respect that they tried something new, and it's actually pretty fun, but it just wasn't nearly as memorable.

Haven't played since beating Chapter 3, which still rules. The line about "you can't leave now that you signed a contract unless the promoter releases you" is extremely accurate, someone on the writing team liked wrestling.

Big week next week with Bloodstained and Samurai Shodown. I've already spoiled myself on the Bloodstained bosses and I still can't fathom that its actually out. I'm glad to see that bugs aside the general consensus has been that its good and that it avoids the Mighty No. 9 and Yooka-Laylee Kickstarter pitfalls.

Bloodstained got here a day early and the patch was already available so I played it until my Switch battery died (about 2 hours.) It is everything I wanted. Its honestly surreal to be playing it and its really cool to see the game being advertised as "this is a game by Koji Igarashi", my dude finally getting the respect he always deserved.

This is good to hear. I want to play it eventually.

bloodstained chronicles:

Beat four bosses so far. I liked the third one a lot. I'm playing on the Switch which is getting a lot of publicity for being a bad port. So far I've only encountered one area that was rough with a screen transition loading time. Otherwise, its been fine. Seems like the developers are aware and gonna patch things so hopefully no further issues when I get further in the game.

Stopped at the fifth boss last night after dying. The werewolves in this game are real big and I like that. I have a cool floating book familiar that says goofy **** when I save my game and so I am using him instead of the almost definitely more useful flying sword familiar. I have also unlocked the ability to change my hair and coloring and stuff but I feel weird about straying from the actual design. Maybe I'll do that in another one. One of the hair styles makes you a straight up Castlevania character.

This game is good.

I wish the whip weapons were better, otherwise I've been having fun.

Yeah the whip feels weird. Its almost like they tried to not make it like the CV whip but tried too hard.

I have beaten Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. I paid 300 dollars for the game to get made and waited four years and I can safely say it was worth every penny and every minute.

Switching DMs in DND since we finished up the story my friend wrote for when he was DMing. Its the first time I've ever really completed a campaign as a player. I decided to go as opposite as possible with the next character, so instead of a Mastodon inspired umb barbarian I am playing a snake lady sorcerer with frost giant magic origins.

quick, how much of my decision to play the giant soul sorcerer origin was because:

-giants are cool
-giant soul sounds like a dark souls thing
-the giant's realm is called ostoria which really sounds like a dark souls thing

I've never played a Fire Emblem game except for a little bit of the first Ike one, but what I hear about Three Houses kinda makes me want to play it.

I've played all of the US releases but one. I would say I'm more casual than a super fan (certain people really get into it.) They're fun and less initially complicated than other tactical RPGs which I appreciate.

Its cool knowing that when you don't expect it. I remember buying a copy of Demon's Crest with the manual on Amazon for like 17 bucks. The cheapest on eBay now is just the cart for 85 dollars.

Fire Emblem was a great series back in the day but it started to fall off after Path of Radiance, the first Ike game. I am a fan that has been with the series since Genealogy of the Holy War.

The two latest ones for 3DS, Awakening and Fates, effectively polarized the series for longtime fans such as myself and divided the **** community (especially Fates because Awakening was alright). Fates devolved the series into a “waifu”/fanfiction simulator (yeah, blow on your 3DS to blow wind in the face of your wife to raise affection with her) where the focus was on side conversations between characters which, in-turn, broke the gameplay which was already a hot mess to begin with thanks to the pair-up system. And Fates was divided into THREE separate campaigns like goddamn Pokémon Blue, Red, and Yellow. ALL of them equal levels of garbage.

Three Houses looks to somewhat remedy all of this nonsense by telling a good story with characters that actually develop, not being limited to strictly black and white mentality, and having moral ambiguity. Not only that, but actual balanced gameplay too. Fire Emblem Fates was filled with one-note gimmick characters except for the occasional outlier or two and the game revolved around the main protagonist whining about his/her family EVERY. ****. SCENE.

And THEN there was Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia which was a remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden....but the entire game was a slogfest of irritating maps and horrid gameplay. FACK.

I have NOT been enthused with the series for quite some time now and I have very strong feelings on the subject. Three Houses will be the goddamn revitalization of this series. Sorry for the tangent and rabbidry

god I have never wanted to like a game more and wasn't able to, the maps were so lame and it felt like there was no enemy unit variety, I remember the exact moment I quit when I was on a map that was just an entire army of mages and nothing else

it sucks because for a game based on a famicom game, it did a good job updating the character designs and stuff to feel more modern, but god I could not keep myself at it by the end


the best part is when they removed a lot the weird stuff from the american version and certain people lost their fucking minds as if they had been slapped in the face

Fates is pure schlock but I put like 100+ hours into it so I will always dig it. Its a perfect commute game (pop it in, mess around on some maps and mess with some character building, turn it off when the train gets to the last stop.) I can fully understand why people would hate it because its total schlock, but I like schlock myself. Other than the first GBA game (which I adore) I was always a casual side fan of the series. It was like chasing the high and I never found it again. I'm almost positive I got Radiant Dawn for Christmas out of obligation and by like level 3 I was over it. I've wanted to play Genealogy since I respect the mid game twist a lot, but I've never been able to really get into it. Maybe if it was on a console rather than an emulator. I guess I could look into repro carts.

i actually think conquest is pretty fun to play, hideously bad story notwithstanding. skill transferring made character building a little extra fun, the maps were pretty good and it was sufficiently difficult that it had me wrack my brain a bit to get through it without being stupidly difficult. i'd prolly play it again were my 3ds not broken. it's just a shame that birthright and revelations had all of the bad parts of conquest and none of the good parts. also i really wanna play three houses just because I'm compelled to play fire emblem-anything, but I don't have a switch

also I have the feeling we'll prolly see a new advance wars within the next decade since that's ripe for nostalgia. i dunno whether or not it's a monkey's paw situation where they'll make some polarizing changes from the older games like they did with fire emblem, though

I vaguely remember an article/interview with someone from IS who said something along the lines of "we'd like to but we don't know how to add the stuff people like about the new Fire Emblems." Realistically if they need to add relationship stuff whatever fine monkey paw away, the COs in the first three games were all goofy anyway. Military academy AW is a compromise I'm willing to make.

I did basically nothing but play it yesterday so I'd say I'm pretty obsessed with it right now whoops. It feels like reverse Persona in some ways and its really good at almost always having some sort of goal in reach to keep you playing.

Well I will say that the route I went is the shortest, but I'm not sure by how much. I didnt skip anything and talked to everyone on exploration days. The only thing I could see being a factor is I didnt grind as many free battles as I could have but it wasnt necessary for me really to do so. My buddy beat Golden Deer recently and his time was around 55 hours for reference.

Yeah, its dope as hell. I'm actually in Toronto and didnt go to the show and I'm kicking myself because seeing that entrance live would have been worth the ticket cost. The lantern being a severed old Bray head is genius.

There's a lot of guys I love and the influence of independent and international wrestling has been a net positive, but too many of those guys also think work rate is the only way to go and don't learn as much about character and stuff. They need more Joey Janelas but AEW stole him away.

-I am in the Golden Deer run for Three Houses, my second run. I'm going slower but hope to have it beaten before Link's Awakening comes out. Game still rules, although I do feel pangs of guilt when I see Edelgard standing around without me to guide her. Black Eagles will always be my house.

-I've been playing Wario Land 4 on my commute because the copy of Wario Land 3 I have has a busted save battery. Its very good, probably the best of the Wario Lands I've played. Bosses in particular are a real step above the other games' offerings. I have one level left before the fourth boss I need to beat to unlock the final area.

-A friend mentioned a freeplay dinosaur museum game called MyMuseum. I am currently addicted to it and am now mobile game trash.

-Most important, I got a Dreamcast copy of Crazy Taxi and it rules. Video games peaked at Crazy Taxi. Its been my post work cooldown, come home and just do a few runs. I'm not even good at it, just enjoy playing it. Sega really used to rule man.

VIII's real weird. It does away with a lot of JRPG staples at the time, sometimes successfully and sometimes not, but its mixed together in a way that makes it really the most late 90s JRPG I can think of. Its overly melodramatic and tries to hard and is probably a big mess and I love all that about it. It also has the best card game of any video game ever.

Nah, I've never been big into the series actually. The humor always put me off it and as much as I can respect the Diablo-esque aspects of it now, I didn't care about that kind of stuff when it first came out.

I am in the time skip for Three Houses and my previous feeling of "no black eagles let me teach you i'm sorry for picking a different house" have been amplified. This game rules.

I feel like I need a new hobby. Not that I have the time, but still. An online acquaintance of mine recently shared a thing about how people should have creative hobbies in addition to consumptive ones, which got me realizing that all my hobbies save D&D (which is not nearly as big a thing as I would like since certain friends are very hard to schedule around) are all consumptive. Its also been about a decade since I started reading comics and coming up on over five years since I started going to wrestling shows so yeah I'm feeling to itch. Gotta start like miniature painting or basket weaving or snake charming or something.

Beat another Three Houses route, this time Golden Deer. It was good even though deep in my heart I am still a Black Eagle and fighting against them felt wrong. Gotta take a break from the game since I'm feeling a little burnt out on it, this will give me time to mentally prepare for Link's Awakening.

I told myself I would take a break from Three Houses after beating the Golden Deer route. It was a lot of time to dump into the game to start another route and I wanted to be ready for Link's Awakening and not be playing a long JRPG. I succeeded in taking the break from Three Houses.

Anyway, I am now replaying Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, a long JRPG.

An interesting thing this time around is its the first time I've played the game since visiting Tokyo and having the dawning realization that I have been to a lot of the places named in game. I just beat Kabukicho Prison, which was not a prison but a place my friend and I walked around at midnight. We were continually approached by English speaking men trying to get us to go to titty clubs. There were no demons, but we did find a place to have ramen. I still find it hard to believe the trip worked out honestly.

Nocturne is a good video game.

Been taking my time with Link's Awakening since I know most of the game by heart save the new additions. Its still a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.

Got Dante in Nocturne and am using him for the first time ever. He seems appropriately lame. I wanna play the Raidou version instead and not understand a word of it.

i think dante is pretty good, although mostly because he starts at level 80 and I get him at level 65 or something. he's a strong enough crutch to lean on for a while that I don't mind permanently losing a party slot to someone who can't scratch lucifer

Been tracking my deaths this run. Seven from bosses, four from random battles and of those four two were in the kalpas. Just gotta beat Metatron and the four kings then its final dungeon time. Did TDE last run so I decided to actually go with a reason this time.

Beat Nocturne on Saturday and Link's Awakening today. LA remake rules and filled me with joy. The fact that such a beautiful and faithful remake of one of the best games ever really hit me at the end. I rarely 100% games anymore but I'll definitely do so for this.
