It was one of the most fun and well made movies I've seen. It's mostly just over-the-top, self-indulgent movies. What Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez did was just remake the feel of those movies (complete with a double feature that Grindhouse cinema was most known for) and poke fun at them and generally have a good time. The movies are not to be taken seriously at all. The movie was ruined when Death Proof and Planet Terror were announced to be released on DVD separately.
