He only ever isn't near the end of the games, whereas Shadow is never a villain anymore.

Shadow never WAS a villain. he was the "Fake" villain. We think he's a villain, but then he turns good.

Uh. No. A character doesn't have to be evil to be the antagonist. In a game where you play as a criminal and you're fighting the cops, the cops are the antagonist.

The antagonist is just the character who works against the protagonist.

Shadow can also be the protagonist, since you play as him in his perspective too. >_>

In the storyline, he's the antagonist though. <_<


You can play as Eggman too, but he isn't the protagonist, and play against Sonic, but he isn't the antagonist.

It's arguable if he's the protagonist or antagonist. I mean, he's treated like an antagonist in the Hero storyline, but Sonic is too in the Dark storyline.

...And regardless of his motives or how he was at the end of the game, Shadow was no less evil than Eggman. Seeking revenge and attempting to conquer/destroy the planet is still villainous behavior.
