I believe someone mentioned somewhere along the line that they gave him his mother's name to keep people from worshiping him as "The great son of the Fourth" or something. and as this new chapter just showed, his birth was in secret, so that only a few knew that he actually was the son of the fourth hokage. Also, It's likely to the general populace that Naruto's mom was known as "the wife of the fourth hokage," so it's possible her original name wasn't remembered. This is just thoughts, though.
