1) Gameplay - this covers a wide variety of aspects. ease of use, control set up, adaptability of gameplay environment, etc.  Think of this as you over all rule. if it doesn't have good gameplay, it usually isn't worth buying.

2) Competitive Play - i've thought long and hard on this and have come to the conclusion that a game gains more replay if it has terrific multiplayer capabilities (just look at Smash Bros., Mario Kart, etc.). I came to this realization while i was playing Fooseball (sp?) with a bunch of drunk people. It wasn't the gameplay, any discernible story or some other third thing, but it was the fact that we were playing other people. A game is far more enjoyable when played with others (Army of Two?).

3) Suspension of Reality - the most important one. Suspension of Reality (SoR) is what gives a game its edge. If you're anything like me (god forbid) then you should have some idea as to why games can become so addicting. Its because they take you to another plane. Its because they aren't real. I play video games to go on the adventures that i know could never happen. Just look at Twilight Princess. Do you really play it because its familiar? Because you see this stuff everyday? No, you play it because its a SoR. Only in a video game could you even imagine going head to head with giant monsters several feet stories taller than you.

4) Visuals - A game is what it looks like. Imagine GTA4 with Wind Waker graphics. Would you buy it? Of course not! It would look like some kind of cartoon ****. A game's graphics are what give it it's substance; its 'look' if you will. Take Geometry Wars for example; the entire game is made up of retro style line graphics that went out of style years ago. However, could you imagine it any other way? What about Paper Mario with Metal Gear graphics? See my point?

5) Price - this goes without saying. if it costs too much, its probably not worth it.

6) Story - though not always necessary, some games revolve entirely around a story of some sort. for games such as Second Sight, Beyond Good and Evil, and Tomb Raider which lack a multiplayer mode, the story is what drives the game, makes the player want to keep playing to see what happened next in the story line. A good story line in a single player game can determine success of failure. Good story telling always brings them coming back.

7) Content - a game's content is what gives it its replay value. if a game offers more unlock-able content then it will encourage the player to keep playing games over and over again in order to gain new content. The more unlockables in a game, the more it can (and will) be played.

so there you go. i think i forgot a few so i'll update it later.

Multiplayer and competitive play aren't necessarily one and the same.

no, but they do have the same principles: its more fun to play with others than by yourself.

You mocked WW's graphic style. I dislike you for that.

i said GTA4 wouldn't look good with WW graphics. i'm saying the graphics need to match the genre.

Games like that can look good cel-shaded. Look at Killer 7.

Anyway, I get what you mean and you make a good point.
