Jesus, I think we've gotten the point. Everywhere I'm going on this site someone (or maybe it's just you, I dunno) has to say how incredible Kamina is.
This. It's either Kamina, or TTGL in general. It's not Kamina. And it's not TTGL. Kamina IS a great character. TTGL IS an awesome anime. People just blow it out of proportion, because that's what the show is all about. Blowing things way out of proportion. The whole purpose of TTGL is to make people shocked at how much they can blow things out of proportion. I mean, one of the mechs destroy at least 30 other evil mechs... USING THEIR IMMENSE SPIRIT ALONE. They make MECHS EXPLODE. WITH WILL POWER. That's what the show is all about. Explosions, awesome characters and blowing things out of proportion. Okay, the story is good too, but that's not the main reason to watch the anime. But as I said, it's not the show. Or the characters. Blame the people. No it's not, don't lie. The whole show is about EPIC HOTBLOODED MANLINESS. And besides the sudden lack of the ability for anyone to shut up about the show, a while ago I was advertising it and nobody watched it regardless. Now everyone has watched it and thinks it's the best thing ever. What the hell? >_> I was forced into watching the show. I hate 99% of mecha anime, or anime that involves mecha <_< I don't know how that could be, then. TTGL was basically just like any other Super Robot show except that it amplified the ridiculousness/awesomeness.

Many mech shows I've seen seem more focused on the soap opera crap between the pilots than the robots beating each other in the face with drills tbqh

Actually, I've seen a lot of mech animes with over the top action.
Of course, there is a lot of focusing on the love themes and such as well to balance it out...

I think with TTGL, it's so over the top, it toes the line between parody and affectionate tribute so carefully, you can't help but love it.

Those are Real Robot shows. TTGL is a Super Robot show.

Hmm... perhaps I just haven't found any other super robot shows then. Many mech shows I've seen seem more focused on the soap opera crap between the pilots than the robots beating each other in the face with drills tbqh
This is the kind I've seen lying around the most. With the main pilot wangsting. Kind of like Simon, except THEY WANGST FOR THE ENTIRE SHOW

Neon genesis Evangelion springs to mind. That's the first and only thing I thought of based on what you said. But then, Shinji is the unrivaled master of ANGST. He managed to never stop whining even to the very end of the series.
