Sure, sometimes movies aren't true to their book counterparts, or maybe they're not as good (which is probably true most of the time). But the major complaint I have is that movies ruin the world that you create in your mind as you read this book. I'm sure everyone has a different image of everything in their head. Of course, if the book is good enough, then it'll describe the setting for you. But that still doesn't mean everyone will have the same thought in their head.
Not that book to movie translations are bad. Some of them are quite good. But I just don't like the idea of limiting the story to the world the makers of the movie came up with. I don't know why, but to me it almost feels as if the placement of things, the way the place looks, and everything else is made official. Thus, the original setting you come up with is essentially nullified because of this. That's how it is for me, at least.
Meh, most *Insert form of media here* translations to *Insert form of media here* aren't as good as the original anyways. Movies to games always suck and vice versa. There are only a few exceptions.

I think that's a different case. The movie comes out with the setting given to you. The novelization is just...something extra. It doesn't really hurt, because it doesn't ruin any creative image you come up with. Why? Well, if you've already seen the movie...
Though I do remember reading a few Spongebob books (I was young >_>) based off of the really old episodes. The books were a bit cheesy and not as good as the episodes themselves. That's probably because they lacked the comical value or something. They were still good for a few quick reads when I was bored though.

Books are made from movies almost exclusively for promotion.

I get you; it's like telling someone a girl is perfect. That girl is perfect in the minds of everyone who hears that. But, when they actually see and meet her, then she may not be how they imagined a perfect girl.

That is one of the things I really enjoy about books, is that you get to imagine the characters as you want to. Sometimes my real life friends even show up in the books I read. Never my real life dogs though, if a dog shows up in a book, there's an 80% it's going to die...

I'm dissatisfied with how I wrote that.

there's a site somewhere completely devoted to bashing those books and the author. I don't mind book-to-movie stuff myself, especially since there can be many versions(Charlie and the Chocolate Factory/Willy Wonka's Chocalate Factory, etc.) that each give it a different feel. And I myself never seem to lose what I imagine when I first read a book, and the films can often times make me think 'Hey, that's a pretty neat way to convey *whatever*' The only thing I truly dislike is they can never be able to get EVERYTHING from the book in a movie(like how in the recent Prince Caspian movie we never get formally introduced to Cornelius, or even Prince Caspian. The movie just throws us right into the action, which is jarring).
