It really doesn't matter if it can. Numerous years pass after about 3 weeks in space, which nobody could live through without food. Said numerous years is nothing before 12000 years; it would accurate to judge that more than the equivalent of our year had past for the Gunbuster crew; more than a year without eating. Gainax should have thought about the plot past "giant robots and bouncing, bare boobies." ITS PRETTY HOPELESS TRYING TO GO TO SLEEP EARLY ALL OF A SUDDEN AFTER BEING UP UNTIL 4 AM THE ENTIRE SUMMER
