I have a soft spot for the majority of the classic FF bad guys, Garland is just badass plus he's the original.

I'd use him, Golbez, Kefka, Terra, and Squall, most likely.
and if they wanted to be really cool, they'd add Ashley and Sydney from Vagrant Story as bonus characters.

I'm aware of that: I always start with the hard-to-use characters first so I could master them earlier (at least, that's what I want to believe). Emperor/Mateus also has an interesting playstyle. He'll probably end up being the most underused in the game, though. |

Call me sad, but I'm going to play through them in order.
Since all the villains apparently need to be unlocked, I'll be going as Warrior of Light first, then Firion, then Onion Knight, and so on.

It has multiplayer, of course. If you're talking about online multiplayer, then you either need a PS3 with Ad-Hoc Party or know how to use xLink Kai.
