Okay, well what about when guys look up at the sky and the clouds form images of his aquaintences?
Or when the camera stops on the main antagonist, and it zooms through HIS eyeball. He's always smiling while a dozen other sub-villains do their poses and crap before the camera gets to him.
I'm going insane. It's cause of this damn ulcer.

As for eyes and the zooming in on them, it's probably part of the well-known literary cliche that you can divine what a person's thinking, feeling, whether they're honest or not, and much more incidental information just by looking in a person's eyes. This is even more exaggerated in most anime, with their overlarge eyes (originally drawn that way in order to make facial expressions easier to draw and communicate with, believe it or not).

Hm, makes sense. But sometimes drawing in that style makes it harder to portray some expressions...
