Explain the difference between FMA and FMA:B.
FMA - Starts off very similar to the manga, but it has a plethora of differences that affect the show later on. It then finally splits completely like 25 or 30 episodes in. The last 26 episodes aren't quite as good as the first 25, but they're still pretty good. 51 episodes total. Finished. FMA:B - Truer to the manga. First episode is different from the first chapter, but it picks up from there. The pacing is really fast, because they already went over the beginning in the first series, even thought they had their differences. But if you want my guess, then I'd say they're going to slow it down substantially as the series progresses, particularly when it reaches the point where the first anime didn't cover. 5 episodes so far. Not finished. It updates every Sunday. FMA manga has some fantastic pacing though. Probably the best of the three. It has a few chapters left, but that's meaningless. It updates monthly. 94 chapters so far, I believe. Each chapter is like 35-40 pages. I'd recommend watching both. Just marathon FMA until you finish it or whatever, and watch FMA:B as it updates. FMA:B is far from finished. And please make sure to watch the dub for FMA. It's fantastic and better than the sub IMO. If you want to, go ahead and read the manga. It's my favorite of the three.

Yeah, most likely I'll watch the first one, then the second if I feel like it. And alright on the dub, I've heard the dub's excellent for FMA. Also I don't read manga so yeah.

Neither do I. Which makes it a better reason to read it.
Sort of. It's the only manga I've read.

However, they're two different formats, and I don't like the manga format, so there.

Most manga to anime adaptations end in the manga being more fleshed out, interesting, likable and unfortunately often longer, though. For the most notable examples, if you're going to watch things like Tenjou Tenge, the original Hellsing anime or Negima!, it's almost entirely preferable just to forget about the anime and read the manga.
The same works both ways, or multiple ways when you include media such as light novels or visual novels being the original format for the media.

Visual novels are pretty much impossible to translate to anime properly due to having multiple routes, too.
