I wonder if the VN did it better, though the entire part of Akio's backstory seemed like it was thrown in at the last moment for the sake that no parallels were drawn between Nagisa and Akio being high school actors until Akio reveals it himself. The fact that Akio was purported to be a highly skilled and well-known student actor makes it even less forgivable.
The ending of the first season of CLANNAD really drops the ball with a few things, to be honest.
