You said beyond the moe fanbase though. Lucky Star and K-ON! are popular and don't appear to appeal to any other demographic.

I cannot speak for K-ON, but Lucky Star is a more interesting case than normal. Its target demographic is basically the computer generation who are well aware of many modern anime topics, including moe, though it doesn't really pander to the moe subculture as much as lampshade traits that are part of it. Of course, given how much the moe internet subculture has encroached upon the modern generation of anime, anyone who would be familiar with it would likely be part of it themselves. Through this, you will get those perverted douchebags who watch it for the jailbait deformed loli ****, though some of these people, even those who are into moe art, may watch it less for this and more for the fact that the subject material hits home. Take that analysis as you would, as it does attract parts of this subculture intentionally, but not in the sense that it wants to fulfill its perversions.

I know I started watching Lucky Star only because I liked the art.

Didn't last long.

K-On! isn't nearly as bad as Lucky Star IMO. I like the music from it...

Scratch that, it's just as bad, if not worse. At least Lucky Star has parodies and lampshading and such, K-On! is "Let's put a bunch moe archetypes around a table and do anything but music" Except when they do play music, of course.

So apparently when water demon lolis need to heal people they take their clothes off (and start glowing) and then... rub their bodies in them in an extremely sugges... Scratch that. It totally looked like they were having sex.

...Why am I watching this again?

...Didn't I say the same thing when I came across this scene in the manga?

Also, it started playing it's... "Funny scene" music so it's basically what I would imagine watching **** with the Benny Hill theme playing in the background sounds like, except not actually funny.
