Neon Genesis Evangelion (Series or movie ending no u Jake) are the most notable series endings I've seen just for doing things differently.
If by "doing things differently" you mean half ass it without trying to hide it, then yes.
Movie ending was acceptable though, not excellent but acceptable.
They had a low budget by that point.
So to get the point across they were forced to use old footage and more surrealistic imagery. It fits with the show to be honest.
As for what I thought had a great ending...
Well, nothing I can think of right now.
