If that's the case, then my employer is being ripped off.

Well, at least minimum wage there is higher than the U.S. equivalent, or so I've heard.
Something like £5.50 an hour, IIRC.

I can't be bothered to translate that in U.S. currency, though I can gauge at a glance that it's higher than the Michigan minimum wage, which if I recall correctly is among the highest in the nation.

^v^ So, I get higher taxes and higher pay. It all balances out. I like my country.
America's nice, but it's too "look after self first". Everyone is only really after money. And I hear Britain is slowly changing it's gun laws, so... ^v^

The business system in the U.S. is probably among the greatest countries to be in if you really make it big, but it is highly self-reliant, socially ambivalent and overly focused on broad function without amplifying specific functions to bolster morale. And as time goes on, it's only going to get worse; working was formerly a means to an end to reach retirement, though in the future, retirement will become less plausible, meaning that it's a means to another, less satisfying end: death. >_>

Exactly. If you fail to make it, you're fscked.
In Britain, if you're that screwed, there's jobseeker's allowance.

We have our equivalent, which is welfare or depending on age/disability/etc, social security. Granted, the former is a pittance, and the latter can only get you the bare essentials of life. Although I don't know how you reached this connotation from my message; generally speaking, I was touching on how working isn't really satisfying in the U.S.

It's basically the only true high point of labor in the U.S., since there's no conceivable cap to how much you can make in the U.S. Not to say that it's easy or not to eek out a life even if you don't make it big, but if you do, you're going to be pretty well off.
Of course, that's not really an achievement that can be reached by every single person, and the financial gap between those on the top and even the middle-class is immense.
