Boot it off an Ubuntu boot CD. This shouldn't even try to spin the HDD drive up, as it runs from RAM. If it boots, that's good. If you can access the HDD drive from it, that's better. If you can do that, start copying everything you want to keep off the disk onto a USB or an external drive.

If it's an HDD failure, everything on there is pretty much screwed. Salvage everything you can that is *absolutely necessary*. Don't do what my brother did, and try to copy 30-40 gig of anime off it. It can always be re-torrented. Or re-downloaded.

If it's a system failure, you're going to be reinstalling. So save everything you can anyway.


There is a last method which can be used to get data off a crapped disk, but that'll be a last resort for you.
