Sunday 27th March

3:41pm
Okay, my team is levelled up, Victory Road has been cleared of items, now onto the next loose end: Entei and Raikou. Today I'm going to be concentrating on finding and capturing them. Hopefully the former shouldn't be too difficult since they've been practically stalking me, so it's just a matter of actually catching them...

3:56pm
Okay, Raikou is now down to just 1HP after repeated False Swipes, now I just need to actually capture it... I just hope Cheshire is fast enough.

5:18pm
YES! Raikou is mine! It took over two hours, but I finally got him with the very last Quick Ball I had in stock. See, after my Fast Balls were all used up, I decided to just put Raikou to Sleep with Cheshire, then run away. Since his health and status ailments carry over into each encounter until he's been knocked out, I could just run into him again and again and throw a Quick Ball during my first turn, without having to worry about putting him to Sleep first. It's time-consuming, but hey, it works. And I was at the point in a Legendary Pokemon capture attempt where the only thing left to do is keep throwing balls at him, since he was at 1HP and asleep. Why waste loads of Ultra or Great Balls when I can tip the odds in the favour of a more specialised, but as a result more effective, Ball? Besides, Quick Balls are cheaper than Ultra Balls, and they don't take a day to make like Fast Balls. Speaking of which, I think I'll wait until tomorrow to try and catch Entei, so I can try the Fast Balls again. And straight after I've caught him, I'll be taking on the Elite 4 and finally finishing the Johto portion of this game. Until tomorrow, then!

BTW, I think this might be the first time I've caught a Roaming pokemon without the help of a Master Ball. Go me!

Monday 28th March

12:58am
Okay, I've just got my Fast Balls from Kurt. Time to prepare Entei for capture...

1:10am
Huh... Entei's battle music is a little different to Raikou's. Same basic tune, but still, it's a nice touch.

1:53am
Okay, Entei is now down to 1HP and has been put to Sleep. Time to start chucking Fast Balls...

I would say how I think it's strange that Entei and Raikou (and possibly other Roaming pokemon, I'm not sure) can still flee even when they're asleep, but I think this webcomic page sums it up very nicely. Incidentally, I love Entei's eyes in that first panel.

2:21am
YES! Entei is mine! About bloody time too. He really runs all over the place on that map. I swear he moves more randomly than Raikou did... Anyway, I have to admit that I did soft reset once after running out of Fast Balls again, but second time around I managed to catch him with just the second Ball I threw. Not bad, if I do say so myself.

So I'm finishing for now, and I'll do the Elite 4 tomorrow, I swear.

Tuesday 29th March

12:39am
Okay, it's finally time. My team is ready, I'm stocked up on items, let's do this thing...

1:28am
Right, that's Will and Koga down. Both were pretty easy, to be honest. I know my pokemon are a few levels higher, but I was expecting at least a little more trouble from them. Ah well, still three battles to go.

Incidentally, I like the redesigns for the Elite 4 rooms. Koga's in particular looks a lot more ninja-ish.

1:38am
I'd totally forgotten about Bruno and his "Hoo hah!". I still can't work out if it's meant to be a laugh or not...

1:58am
I have to say, Karen initially struck me as the fairly stuck-up, overly-confident type, but she's pretty gracious in defeat. She has a pretty good philosophy towards training pokemon, too. Namely that there's no such thing as "strong" or "weak" pokemon, and that you should just train whatever ones you love.

2:00am
Well look who it is! Time to see if Lance really is all that, considering he let me do most of the work against Team Rocket. ¬_¬

2:24am
Well, he was a little bit tougher than the Elite 4, but not by a huge amount. There were a few tense moments, like his Aerodactyl missing with a Thunder Fang that would've finished Levi off, but nothing too bad. But either I underestimated Tusker's speed, or I overestimated the speed of a Dragonite, because Lance's level 50 Dragonite never even got a chance to attack before it was taken out with Blizzard. I was expecting Tusker to go second every time, but I'm glad I was wrong. Anyway, I'm now the Champion, I'm the greatest!

So there we go. The Johto portion of SoulSilver is done and dusted, and now I'm free to move onto either Black or White. I don't think I'll be blogging my experience in that game, though. So, goodbye for now and thanks for reading!

Tuesday 5th April

Some time ago I wrote up some brief entries for my various playthroughs of the first Distant Glory chapter, so I thought I'd post them two at a time over the next few days. So here we go...

Distant Glory XI - The Lady of Legend (Part 1)

Cloud
So here we go, the first Distant Glory chapter. Looking ahead at the levels of the opponents I’ll be facing, I’m pretty sure I’m still really overlevelled, but I’ll do my best to make this interesting for you. The levels of this chapter seems to follow a similar pattern to the ones in Squall’s Destiny Odyssey chapter. Defeat an enemy, another one pops up somewhere else in the level, or in some cases a chest. The biggest difference, apart from that fact that all battles take place on an Omega stage like in Shade Impulse, is that each level contains two optional boss fights against a Warrior of Cosmos. Level 1 has Warrior of Light and Firion, level 2 has Onion Knight and Cecil, and so on. Oh, and I’ve decided that all Hero characters will use their alternate costumes during their playthroughs, so Cloud will be going through this chapter in his Advent Children outfit. Which is pretty cool, IMO… I haven’t decided yet what I’ll do for the villains, seeing as this will be their first playable appearance in Story Mode.
The second battle of the first level brought with it my first experience with a new enemy: a Lady of Antiquity. And I took it down in about 10 seconds due to it being about half my level. Oh well… Firion met a similar fate in his boss fight. He tried to delay the inevitable with a Mandragora summon (near-immediate BP recovery), but I just caused too much damage for it to keep up. Warrior of Light put up a stronger fight, thanks partly to the effects of Omega Old Chaos Shrine (both combatants’ BP slowly but constantly decreases), but I eventually managed to take him don with a Cross Slash. One thing I found funny was WoL’s message to Cloud as the battle began: “Hesitation will dull your blade”. Perhaps, but it turns out that over-levelling will sharpen it way back up again. ^_^
The Onion Knight boss in the second level was pretty interesting, as its Kraken summon swapped my very high BP (acquired after Breaking him) with his average count, putting me at a big disadvantage. This was soon overcome, however, by my overpowered attacks, and an EX Burst took care of his Phoenix Down after it left him with 1HP. Cecil was a pushover, though. Never even got a chance to use his summon…
The third level brought a Titan summonstone and boss fights against Bartz and Terra. Both managed to get a couple of decent shots in, but were ultimately mown down. The Squall boss in level 4 put up a similarly valiant, though ultimately futile, effort. The Cloud boss was a pretty interesting fight, though. Not because it was difficult, it wasn’t, but because of the atmosphere. AC Cloud Vs FFVII Cloud on the Planet’s Core stage? It was almost like the kind of battle that would take place in Cloud’s own mind.
Anyway, level 5. The final push. And a pretty feeble push it was too. Still, I was at least able to see the Lady of Legend, Shantotto, in action properly, though I’ll have to wait until I play as her myself before I can get a decent impression of her playstyle.

Sephiroth
I’ve decided to do the Villain playthroughs in their regular outfits, mostly because the vast majority of them are just recolours or their regular looks.
Anyway, this is a rather interesting experience, seeing a Villain character on one of these game boards, especially since Sephiroth’s Masamune sword is included in his character piece at its full length. This playthrough may also be a little more interesting than Cloud’s, simply due to the fact that Sephiroth (and indeed all Villain characters with the exception of Golbez, Jecht, and perhaps Exdeath) doesn’t have any Brave attacks that chain directly into HP attacks, making it a little harder to land an HP attack and finish the battle. …Or maybe not, as I just managed to land an Octaslash attack on the Lady of Antiquity in level 1, almost as soon as the match started. Still, the boss fights against Firion and WoL were somewhat challenging.
Level 3 brought with it the first real challenge I’ve had in Story Mode for some time. Since I’d gotten more than a 2-star rating on my last playthrough (3 stars, as it happens), I’d unlocked the Ultimate Battle Piece on the level map, and talk about a contrast. Turns out that a Lady of Antiquity can be quite the **** at times. I even had to retry twice before I finally beat it. I can’t say much about her moveset, seeing as I haven’t played as Shantotto myself yet, but she was able to Break me very easily if I wasn’t careful. Matters weren’t helped by the addition of an Omega summon, which would halve my BP repeatedly over a brief period of time once activated. Overall it wasn’t too horrendous, but it’s safe to say that there are some characters I don’t think I’m quite ready to attempt this with just yet.
The boss fight against Cloud on level 4 was a little nerve-wracking. He managed to hit me with an Omnislash v.5 attack, then used a Carbuncle summon to leave my BP at 0 while his was still recovering. I tried to build my BP up again quickly, but he got a hit in first and inflicted Break on me. And if that wasn’t bad enough he then chained that Brave attack into another Omnislash v.5, bringing me down to just over 200HP! So I retried and took him down the second time with a loss of only about 1000HP. Squall was rather clever with his summon in our fight as well. I managed to get him down to 1HP thanks to Wall Rush damage, but he then inflicted Break on me while my BP was recovering and used his Alexander summon to freeze his BP at over 3000. He then managed to hit me with an Aerial Circle attack, bringing me down to half my remaining HP, before I managed to finish it.
Level 5 brought with it another new enemy: the Warrior of Antiquity. It didn’t put up as much of a fight as I would have expected from an Ultimate Battle Piece, especially after the LoA from level 3, but it still kept me on my toes. I didn’t get to see much from its moveset, though… What was more interesting was that the fight took place on the Omega version of the Edge of Madness stage. I’ve already documented this when I talked about the regular stage, but in case you’ve forgotten, the gimmick here is that the stage BP constantly rises and falls “chaotically”, meaning you should wait for the right moment before inflicting Break for the maximum BP gain. The boss fight against Shantotto was, again, pretty easy. Though this time she did manage to bring me down to about 3000HP.

Thursday 7th April

Next two entries.

Distant Glory XI - The Lady of Legend (Part 2)

Cecil
Not much to say for Cecil, really. The Shantotto copy on level 3 actually managed to beat me this time, but I managed to win on my second attempt. That’s it.

Golbez
Two things to mention about level 1. First, just how tiny Shantotto is in comparison to Golbez, one of the game’s largest characters. Seriously, she only comes up to around his knees. And second, that Firion’s line to Golbez in his boss fight was “You have someone else to face.”. All in good time, Firion, I have to smash my way through you first.
Level 2
Onion Knight: Do you want to talk about your issues?
Me/Golbez: No. *pwns j00*
Level 3 brought my first real defeat at the hands of the high-level Lady of Antiquity. I retried several times, but Golbez just couldn’t keep up with her in terms of BP acquisition. I must admit I think my weapon and armour choices have been rather lacking recently… Not to mention I’ve still yet to properly try using Accessories or extra abilities like Sneak Attack or Riposte. Oh well… I just went ahead and beat the crap out of the remaining enemies to make myself feel better.
The fight against the Warrior of Antiquity on level 5 was pretty nerve-wracking as well. It managed to get to 9999BP, so I had to keep avoiding its attacks and spamming Golbez’s Cosmic Ray attack. And the former isn’t very easy on an enclosed stage like Edge of Madness. Still, I managed it, and without any HP loss whatsoever.
The final cutscene once again demonstrated the size difference between Shantotto and Golbez, by accidentally chopping off Golbez’s head and the tops of his shoulders in some shots…

Tuesday 12th April

Next two entries.

Distant Glory XI - The Lady of Legend (Part 3)

Tidus
Cloud did some serious damage to me during his boss battle on level 4, but I think it was mostly my own fault. I had over 6000 BP, more than enough to OHKO him, but did I do the deed straight away? Nooo… I had to go after the EX Core that spawned. That gave him time to launch an Omnislash v.5 attack, use his Carbuncle summon, Break me before I had a chance to build up my BP again, and hit me with another HP attack, leaving me with HP in the mid-2000’s. I was not happy, and I swiftly dealt him a crushing defeat. Squall was rather badly behaved as well, as he kept dodging my attacks and getting me caught up in his combos. Beat Fang spamming isn’t fun when you’re on the receiving end of it…

Jecht
Wow, fighting that Lady of Antiquity on level 3 really gets the blood pumping after all the other comparatively easy battles. Especially when using Jecht, who, like Golbez, has rather suffered in the Attack department during my recent levelling-up battles. He deals damage, sure, but it never seems like it’s quite what it should be. Still, I only had to retry once against the LoA, so that’s something at least.
I also had my first defeat at the hands of the Warrior of Antiquity, thanks to his Ultima Weapon summon. Basically it inflicts an instant Break on you some time after your opponent uses it. So, adding in the large amount of BP gained from a lucky shot that inflicted Break on me near the beginning of the match, and the ever-fluctuating Stage BP of Omega Edge of Madness, he ended up with almost 9999BP. I was able to hold him off for a bit, but he finally got me during a Chase Sequence. I was able to defeat him in the immediate rematch, though.

I have no idea. I haven't actually played the game for ages, these are just entries I wrote up a while ago. I think I actually played through them during one of my breaks in doing SoulSilver.

Distant Glory XI - The Lady of Legend (Part 4)

Firion
Nothing really to report here, except it was annoying how easily the high-level Lady and Warrior of Antiquity enemies were able to dodge Firion’s attacks… Still, I wore them down in the end.

Emperor
Well this was always going to be an… interesting playthrough, to say the least. I rather enjoyed the early boss battle against Firion, though. Given their hero/villain dynamic (evil overlord vs heroic rebel), it was particularly fun to hit him with the Emperor’s EX Burst. Then, when Firion’s Phoenix Down accessory left him with 1HP after the EX Burst should have defeated him, it seemed appropriate to deal the finishing blow with Starfall, for that classic feel of the “Why won’t you just DIE?!” overkill that often accompanies a villainous breakdown. I suppose the effect is kind of ruined by the fact that the Emperor seems comparatively calm throughout the attack, but you can’t have everything.
I was rather confused by the ending of my initial encounter with the Fallacious Wanderer enemy on level 3. He managed to rebound two of my Flare attacks back at me with his Wind Shear move, so I had to try and take him out while at the same time avoiding them. The second one finally go me after I’d just inflicted Break on my opponent with Thunder Crest, and I was very surprised that the Flare managed OHKO me when the enemy’s was still recovering and in the double digits. It wasn’t until a few moments later that I remembered that rebounded attacks keep the strength of the person that actually used them, rather than changing to fit the stats of the enemy that blocked them. So, as my BP was over 7000 when the Flare made contact, it’s really not that surprising.
The Lady of Antiquity on level 3 was surprisingly easy, given the Emperor’s unusual playstyle. Or at least, it was the second time I took her on. The first time I wasn’t really sure what to do, and by the time I’d figured out a strategy, I’d already lost a fair bit of HP. Ultimately, however, that first match came down to Sudden Death, as both of us had the BP necessary to KO the opponent. I’d whittled down her health over the course of the match, and she’d built up a huge amount of BP due to a few very hard-hitting Brave attacks. I’d fired off a Flare, so she had to keep dodging that while attempting to finish me off. She managed to catch me in a final HP attack, and just before she struck the final blow in the combo, my Flare got her. Unfortunately, however, there were two things standing in the way of my victory. First was the fact that I’d just had Break put on me a not long before this, so my BP was still recovering. The second thing was that I was in EX Mode, having used it to escape from a previous HP attack a few moments before. Now, ordinarily, triggering an EX Burst would have allowed me to recover my BP more quickly and deal the final blow (while also regaining HP, thanks to the Emperor’s EX Mode bonus, not that that would have saved me, thanks to her huge amount of BP), winning the match. Unfortunately, her attack dealt the final amount of HP damage in the split second between my Flare hitting her and me pressing the Square button to initiate the EX Burst. If I’d had my full base BP and not been in EX Mode, I would’ve won that fight… Still, it wasn’t a total loss. I managed to work out a strategy that managed to get me through the rematch relatively unscathed. All I had to do was fire off Flare after Flare, using the next attack as soon as the previous one ran out of steam, while dodging her attacks. Shantotto’s HP attacks have the unfortunate side effect of rooting her to the spot for several seconds while she casts her spells, which meant that she was at great risk of being hit by a Flare while she was trying to attack me. It took a while, she got me with a few attacks, but I prevailed in the end. It was particularly cool on the rare occasion where she initiated a Chase Sequence, because my Flare as still in play and if we hung around dodging each other’s attacks for too long… Boom. It was rather nice to see her dodging my strikes, completely unaware of the large ball of explosive fire slowly creeping up behind her.
The battle against the later Warrior of Antiquity was somewhat easier, due to the small amount of space for him to dodge around in. He dodged very effectively, though, so I was forced to employ the usual tactics I employ when playing as Kefka, and just spammed pretty much every attack I had in order for him to trip up and get hit by the Flare. Finally, the boss battle against Shantotto went very much the same as the one against her copy, just more easily due to her lower level.
Oh, as a properly final note, Tidus damaged the fourth wall a bit at the beginning of his boss fight. He says “What’s this ‘Ungaaaah!’ stuff about?” which of course is the Emperor’s death cry, changing from the “Ubooaaaar!” of the original game.

How does the Emperor play? Like an indirect fighter?

Yeah, he's definitely not good for anything
Seriously, Emperor is one of the two worst characters in the game. But he does best in Pandaemonium, where his opponents don't have much room to dodge.

I would hazard a guess at Ultimecia being the other worst character.

IIRC it's either Firion or Shantotto.

Seriously? You think Firion's one of the worst characters?
