The Bulblax kingdom, you say? I smell regicide.

Yeah. The cave was actually completed yesterday but I decided to write it up today along with today's entry.

Day 14
After harvesting some more berries, I headed over to the new hole with a squad consisting of 50 Reds, 20 Yellows, 20 Purples and 10 Whites. We're back to typical cave/tunnel scenery, no metal platforms or wooden floors with toys about the place, but what was noteworthy was the music. It mainly consisted of horns, drums and bell chimes, and certainly gave off a kingdom/nobility kind of vibe.
The first floor consisted of the circular landing area with four openings in a cross shape. Three of these were alcoves, one of which had a Crimson Candypop Bud, one was empty, and and the third had a sleeping Orange Bulborb at the end of it with a Dwarf Orange Bulborb in front of it near the opening. Orange Bulborbs are basically the same as Red Bulborbs, except with more health and the fact that they're lighter sleepers. A Red Bulborb won't wake up, as far as I know, unless you hit it or throw a Pikmin onto it, whereas an Orange Bulborb will wake up if you get within a certain range. The Treasure Gauge didn't react to either of these creatures, however, so I decided to leave them alone and explore the fourth path, which led to a round room with a large spiralling stump structure in the middle. The exit hole was on the other side of this stump and was being guarded by an Orange Bulborb and three dwarfs behind it. I accidentally ended up with the Bulborb chasing me as I finished my recon, but thankfully I ran out of its range before it could attack any Pikmin, so I ambushed it with Purples as it turned its back to return to its sleeping spot. I killed it and it coughed up the Crystal Clover treasure (150 pokos). After escorting the carrier Pikmin back to the Research Pod (I didn't want them to accidentally attract the Dwarf Bulborb's attention), I snuck around the stump and entered the hole from the opposite side to the trio of Dwarf Bulborbs.
Back to more normal music for floor 2, which was small and easy pickings for Red Pikmin, having fire geysers and a couple of Fiery Dweevils. The only annoying part was the location of the floor's treasure, the Tear Stone (150 pokos). It was on top of another spiralling stump structure, but there was also a fire geyser up there which meant that any Yellows would get roasted. In the end I had to throw some Reds up onto the lowest part of the stump, head into the middle alcove and whistle to get their attention again but they wouldn't fall off the stump, and then direct them around to the geyser and treasure with the C-stick. I was also treated to the interesting sight of a Dweevil picking up its friend's corpse, so it looked like two stuck together.
The third floor was pretty easy. There were just a lot of Female Sheargubs and three of a new creature called a Withering Blowhog. This is like a smaller, weaker, more spherical version of the Puffy Blowhog I encountered in the Glutton's Kitchen, but the air it blows out has the added effect of reducing any Pikmin it hits to their leaf states. Obviously not fatal, but still kind of annoying, so it was fortunate that I was able to drag them down to earth with my Purples and knock them all out before they withered too many of my Pikmin. The floor had actually been randomised in such a way that the exit hole just happened to be in one of the alcoves right near the Research Pod, but I had treasure to find, so I explored the other alcoves. One had an egg (allowing me to re-mature any Blowhog victims), one had an Ivory Candypop Bud (in went 5 Reds, out came 5 Whites), and the other had a buried treasure: the Olimarnite Shell (40 pokos).
The fourth floor was where things started getting tricky. The landing area was at a crossroads between two alcoves, a more open area, and a path that curled around. I explored the open area first (also the location of the exit hole) and was almost immediately surprised by an Iridescent Glint Beetle, which apparently had a treasure so I threw a Purple onto it straight away and it gave up the Crystal King (110 pokos). As I was exploring the curled path, a White Wollywog suddenly dropped from the ceiling. I didn't want to take any chances here, especially as there were also some Anode Beetles very close by just waiting to fry any stray Pikmin, so I petrified it with Bitter Spray and shattered it with my Purples. After claiming the Unknown Merit (100 pokos) the Wollywog had been guarding, I set my attention to the Anode Beetles, which in hindsight I perhaps shouldn't have done because they didn't have any treasure, weren't in the way, and in my haste I accidentally threw a White instead of a Yellow and it got zapped. After this I disabled the few electric nodes around the place, knocked down a pair of Honeywisp eggs hoping for sprays (no luck), and threw 10 Reds into two Violet Candypop Buds I found. I'm going to need all these Purples. Oh! And the Crystal King pushed my funds over 6,000 pokos, so I've now cleared 60% of the debt!.
I think the regal/kingdom music is tied to the Bulborbs (which would be appropriate, given this cave's name) because it returned on the fifth floor, consisting of numerous narrow paths that criss-crossed with each other, which also happened to feature an Orange Bulborb and a pair of Dwarfs. The Adult was unnervingly close to the landing site, though apparently not close enough to attract its attention. It also didn't have any treasure on it, so I left it alone and picked off the two Dwarf Bulborbs between me and the exit hole. Near said hole I found a small spiky growth which, when excavated, turned out to be the Anxious Sprout treasure (50 pokos), so I escorted it back to the Pod and moved on.
The sixth floor was probably the trickiest in this cave, which I suppose was fitting given that it was the final challenge before the cave's boss. Like the first floor the landing site had three alcoves leading off it (two with Crimson Candypops and one wth a Violet Candypop) and a fourth "door" leading into the rest of the floor, which consisted of two large areas connected at different points by two short passages. The first area had two Fiery Dweevils and a pair of Orange Bulborbs (one next to the wall and the other blocking one of the passages with a fire geyser behind it. This one unfortunately had one of the floor's treasures). I killed one Dweevil and the first Orange Bulborb (and was disturbed to see it apparently getting up again until I realised that the remaining Dweevil had simply picked up its corpse), killed the second Dweevil and headed around to the second room, which had another Dweevil and four Dwarf Orange Bulborbs, which I picked off one by one. Unfortunately as I chased the Dweevil into an alcove which had another treasure (Colossal Fossil, 140 pokos), a bomb rock suddenly fell and ended up killing one of my Purples and two of my Reds, but admitedly the damage could've been much worse. Feeling that there was no way I'd be able to knock out the fire geyser without waking the Bulborb up, I decided to head back around to its front, lure it away from its sleeping spot, and then attack it as it headed back after I left its territory. However, this Bulborb was a surprisingly deep sleeper and I ended up having to run up to it as Olimar and punch it in the face before it would get up. It was pretty simple, albeit nerve-wracking to kill it after that, and I claimed the treasure it had swallowed (Eternal Emerald Eye, 150 pokos) as well as the partially buried one I'd seen earlier.
The landing area of the final floor was separated from the boss chamber only by a row of three fire geysers, which I swifty put out with my Reds, and as I did so I couldn't help noticing a couple of eye stalks poking out of the ground visible in the gloom. Combine that image with the name of the cave, and I think people who have played Pikmin 1 will know what's coming. I dismissed all of my Pikmin aside from my 29 Purples, walked into the arena and started throwing them as fast as I could between the eye stalks. Sure enough, the Emperor Bulblax burst out of the ground, albeit a smaller one than the final boss of the first game. And apparently a much weaker one too, for that matter. I know Purple Pikmin didn't appear in Pikmin 1, but I can't believe the final boss Bulblax would've fallen to them so quickly. Throwing all 29 Purples right between the eye stalks had the result of killing the beast literally seconds after it emerged, causing it to slobber unpleasantly as it thrashed about in its death throes. It left behind a large set of remains (probably the biggest yet), as well as the treasure it had been guarding: the Forged Courage (100 pokos). The Ship was able to use this item to make Olimar and Louie's suits fireproof, which was good as I'd need such a function in just a moment. Behind where the Emperor had been was a black wall that needed knocking down, so I set my whole force on it and broke through into an area with a fairly large pool of water and three possible paths. The left one led around the pool to the exit geyser, the right one led around the opposite side of the pool to a low ledge with a some fire geysers near and on it, while the middle path led up to a raised area at the back of the cave (connected to the right ledge) and was only accessible after walking through the pond and had a lot of fire geysers on it, thereby guaranteeing that no Pikmin could go that way. Instead I took my Reds around the right path and threw them up onto the ledge. Next I had Olimar walk up the geyser path where I found the cave's final treasure (Gyroid Bust, 250 pokos) between two more geysers. The whole area looked like some kind of shrine, as noted in Olimar's notes on the treasure. Anyway, I collected the Reds, set them to collect the treasure and it wasn't long before we were blasting out of there.
Upon landing by the Ship and Onions I was greeted by a "60% Debt Cleared" sign and spent the remaining hours harvesting pellets and berries, trying to build up my Red numbers slightly after all those conversions.

Day 15
Today was a bit more hectic and less monetarily productive than I hoped it would be. As soon as I gained control of Olimar I rushed over to the bridge to make sure it was still there and I wouldn't have to waste time rebuilding it, and I saw a group of Sheargrubs crawling over it so I ran over and punched them to death before they could do any damage. Olimar, bitches. I then got out 50 Blues and had them beat up the two Dwarf Red Bulborbs that had respawned before heading over to the watery area with the Yellow Wollywogs and two unbuilt bridges. The Pikmin killed the first Wollywog without much trouble, and I then dismissed them and had Olimar move up onto the middle island where he beat up two Male Sheargrubs that appeared (I didn't take the Pikmin up and swarm them because there was a risk of some getting poisoned by the spouts under on bundle of bridge sticks), and then set the Blues to work building the bridge. I then had Louie bring 15 Whites to build the second bridge just enough to allow them access to the spouts so they could be knocked out, but unfortunately this attracted the attention of the second Wollywog who was able to squash one of the Whites before they'd finished, so I called them away (and had them carry the Shearwig/Bulborb corpses back to the Blue Onion with guidance from a few Blues) and started attacking with the remaining Blues. The Wollywog was defeated, but a few of the off-target Blues started working on the bridge again and completed it due to it being pretty short. Ah well, I thought, no harm done right? I would soon discover I was very, very wrong. I had my Blues collect the Wollywog corpse and the "5" pellet it spat out, planning to come back and get the nearby treasure when they were done, but because the new path I'd just opened up with the second bridge was shorter they decided to take it, and it wasn't long before they were ambushed by a Burrowing Snagret. Yes, you read that right. A boss appeared above-ground (okay, not too unusual as they also appeared above-ground in Pikmin 1). And managed to eat six of the Blues before I called them away and ran back to the Ship & Onions to regroup (narrowly avoiding a Creeping Chrysanthemum that was hiding near the edge of the ledge, because apparently the Snagret wasn't enough). I got out 20 Purples and headed back around to confront the Snagret again (leaving my Blues by the bridges), deciding to use up one of my Bitter Sprays to give my Pikmin a greater chance to attack. It wasn't enough, though, because it broke out and managed to eat 3 Purples before the others finished it off. I then went and froze/shattered the CC as well because I really couldn't be bothered to kill it the "proper" way, especially as it was a few hours away from sunset. So I had the Purples and Blues collect the Snagret and Wollywog corpses, plus the pellets those two and the Chrysanthemum had left behind (along with two "10" pellet posies which had sprouted without my noticing) and they all got them back to the Onion just before the day ended. I then discovered in the summary screens that I had accidentally left two more Blues behind. Oh dear...
So yeah, not a great day. I'll now be kind of forced to attempt the next cave tomorrow before the Snagret respawns as I really don't want to have to deal with it again just to gain access (there's a white wall in front of the entrance, preventing me just running past and entering before the Snagret can strike). Similarly I'd prefer not to have to kill the Wollywogs and re-build the bridges again, so I also need to get the treasure tomorrow before the enemies respawn or the bridges are eaten by Sheargrubs. Fun, fun times ahead. >_<

Next time: Burrowing into the Snagret Hole.

Yeah, cave days are usually the most lucrative ones.

And the way things are going, the last Awakening Wood treasure combined with those in the Snagret hole will probably be enough to push me over 8,000.

Never again... never again...

Day 16
Upon touching down in the Awakening Wood the first thing I noticed was that some sprouts were already present under the Blue Onion, presumeably left over from yesterday, so I plucked them, brought out enough blues to bring my total up to 60 (just to be sure), matured as many as possible with grass nectar and set off to get the final treasure in the watery area. As I predicted the Yellow Wollywogs hadn't respawned yet, and thankfully neither had the Burrowing Snagret when I scouted ahead with just Olimar, so I'd be able to knock down the white wall and enter the hole behind it without any trouble. Incidentally, when I got close enough to the hole I had the usual "discovery" cutscene where the Ship said it detected "a high-pitched wail" from underground, and I realised I was very fortunate that I didn't accidentally get close enough to the hole to trigger the cutscene yesterday during the Snagret fight, otherwise I probably would've lost a lot more Pikmin than I did. Anyway, I went back to the Blues and Louie and set about using the see-saw blocks in the water to reach the treasure (Air Brake, 100 pokos). These particular blocks were rather unusual in that they were some distance apart instead of right next to each other. After this I went back to the Onions, sprouted a few Yellows with the nearby Pellet Posies (no big ones today) put away all my Blues, got out 60 Reds, 20 Purples and 20 Whites, sent Louie with the Whites to harvest some more berries and took the Reds & Purples to break down the wall. By then sunset was starting to close in so I switched my army around and entered the hole with 40 Blues, 30 Yellows, 20 Purples and 10 Whites. This was not going to be fun...
The first floor certainly looked a lot like a burrow. It was a fairly long sloping passage, with few Male Sheargrubs, up to a small area with a sleeping Orange Bulborb (which unfortunately had a treasure so I would have to kill it), and about halfway along there was an intersection where another steeply-sloped and dimly-lit passage led up to the exit hole, which was situated in an odd wooden area with light shinging through gaps in the planks. I killed the Bulborb in the usual way (lure away then pile on Purples as it returns to sleeping spot), claimed its treasure (Crystallised Telekinesis, 120 pokos) and was about to leave when I noticed that the Treasure Gauge was reacting strongly to a feather lying nearby. I had a White carry it to the Research Pod where it was name the Leviathan Feather and valued at 10 pokos, which I think is a new record for least valuable treasure. Still, every little helps. Oh, and the Crystallised Telekinesis brought my funds up to 7,010 pokos, so I've now cleared 70% of the debt!
Floor 2 was quite bizarre, though admittedly not on the same level as any floor in the Glutton's Kitchen. I was apparently outside in a huge grassy area with passages marked out by small stones and sloped logs that would allow any stray Pikmin to re-enter the play section. Scouting ahead revealed a small watery area off to one side with a Cloaking Burrow-nit and Creeping Chrysanthemum guarding an egg on the opposite bank, but as neither of those enemies had any treasure and the egg only contained nectar, I was able to just leave them alone and not worry about taking them out with just 40 Blues... Other enemies distributed about the floor (the largest section of which had a huge upside-down bucket and spade in the middle) included Male Sheargrubs, Shearwigs, another Burrow-nit and another Chrysanthemum guarding the exit hole. Both treasures (Taste Sensation and Combustion Berry, 40 and 190 pokos respectively) happened to be unguarded, however, so I was able to claim them with relative ease. after that it was a simple matter to dash past the Chrysanthemum and quickly exit before it woke up. BTW, the Combustion Berry was basically just a larger Sunseed Berry (or strawberry as we in the real world call them).
Floor 3 was where the troubles began, as it was the first of three "Nightmare Floors" as I shall be calling them. Why? Because somewhere in this one large area (six alcoves were walled off) a pair of Snagrets were lurking, one of which had a treasure. Yes, two of those hateful things. There was also a Swooping Snitchbug buzzing around, but thankfully I was able to bring it down and kill it without accidentally alerting one of the Snagrets. I lost three of my Purples to the first Snagret I faced, which also happened to be the one with the Meat Satchel (40 pokos), and I had hoped that would be the end of it, but unfortunately the second Snagret was right in front of the alcove with the exit hole in it. Thankfully this fight went more smoothly than the previous one, though I did use up one of my Bitter Sprays and I almost lost another Purple but the beast was killed before it could swallow, and I was finally able to break down the remaining walls. I converted 10 Blues into Whites and Purples using Ivory and Violet Candypop Buds, matured them with egg nectar then moved on.
Floor 4 brought me back to the metal platforms floating in a huge cavern that I think I last saw way back in the White Flower Garden. This one was a fairly large structure with some winding paths and seemed empty aside from some electric nodes, but then I entered the area near the exit hole and found it crawling with enemies. There were about five Dwarf Orange Bulborbs, a new enemy called a Watery Blowhog (same as the Fiery one but it shoots water instead) and two Armoured Cannonball Beetle Larvae, one of which dropped from the ceiling and apparently had a treasure. I used the treasure Larva to kill all other enemies (including the other Larva, very satisfying after what happened in the Glutton's Kitchen) and then brought my Purples around and threw them all onto its back, killing it and releasing the Heavy-duty Magnetizer (150 pokos). These two Larvae had just been walking around instead of being half-buried in earth, so it was a lot easier to hit them without risking my Pikmin beign crushed than it had been in the Glutton's Kitchen. No Pikmin massacres on this floor! There were two more treasures here, one of which had been in the middle of the enemy pack (Cupid's Grenade, 20 pokos), while the other was behind some electric nodes (Crystallised Telepathy, 120 pokos), so I claimed them both, along with the Magnetizer and jumped into the next hole.
I was still on metal platforms on Floor 5, and shortly after landing I noticed that something was making the Treasure Gauge malfunction, so I headed in with my squad, killing some Dwarf Orange Bulborbs that dropped from the ceiling, until I reached another fairly large area with a new enemy in it: the Antenna Beetle. These things hop around making weird (and annoying) noises that can cause Pikmin to disobey the captains and run away, so I waited for it to stop "whistling" then chucked the Purples at it, managing to stun and kill it, at which point it coughed up the Emperor Whistle treasure (75 pokos). How very appropriate. Killing the Beetle also fixed the Treasure Gauge so I was able to find the floor's other treasure. I scouted around what I thought would be the most likely route for the Pikmin to carry the two items, made sure no more Dwarf Bulborbs would drop down and ambush them on the way, and set them to carry the Whistle and Crystallised Clairvoyance (20 pokos) back to the Research Pod. Five floors down and two to go, but these last ones would be the nastiest of the lot...
There was another pair of Snagrets lurking in the angular, sandy, puddle-filled corridors of the sixth floor, one of which was in the slightly smaller chamber right next to the larger landing site. A Dwarf Orange Bulborb also dropped down near the opening between the two rooms, but thankfully it was far enough away from the Snagret's territory that I was able to swarm it and claim the Mysterious Remains (150 pokos) it released. I lost another 3 Purples to the first Snagret and it didn't even have a treasure, but unfortunately it would be impossible to for Pikmin to carry treasures through the area while it was still alive so I was forced to fight it. Then it was a matter of carefully moving my army through the narrow corridors, avoiding puddles, until I reached a small antechamber near the second large area (which was also the location of the exit hole). I took in my Purples and Blues and it wasn't long before I found the second Snagret, which did have a treasure. I decided to petrify this one as it got stuck coming out of the ground, giving my squad more time to pound it, then called them back just before it broke out and retreated to the antechamber. I went back in with just the Purples and took the remaining third of its health, making it cough up the Triple Sugar Threat (60 pokos). I then had the Whites knock out a couple of poison spouts so I could access the exit hole and Science Project treasure (20 pokos), and finally knocked down a nearby wall to get at the Salivatrix treasure (30 pokos). I sent a single Blue back with the Science Project first to check the route it would take, then sent some more after it with the Triple Sugar threat and Salivatrix. I then converted 5 of these Blues into Whites with an Ivory Candypop near the Research Pod (there was also a Queen Candypop and a Blue Lapis Lazuli Candypop) and jumped down to the final floor. There was also another Antenna Beetle about, but it wasn't anywhere it could to do any harm and I'd already collected all the treasure on this floor, so I left it alone. Incidentally, the Triple Sugar Threat brought me almost exactly to 8,000 pokos, 8,005 in fact, so I have officially cleared 80% of the debt! Less than one fifth to go!
I had to be careful upon landing in the final floor, as there was no safe place. The entire floor was the boss arena with eight alcoves coming off it, some of which were blocked by walls. There was an egg in all of them except the one with the exit geyser and two with Queen Candypop Buds. I quickly moved all my Pikmin into one of the larger unblocked alcoves and carefully went around the edge with the captains breaking all the eggs in the other unblocked alcoves, and I got a free Bitter and Spicy Spray from two of them. Finally I wasn't able to put it off any longer, so I got my remaining Purples, headed out into the arena proper, and it emerged: the Pileated Snagret. Not only is it larger than its Burrowing cousin and possesses more health, but it can fully emerge from the ground and hop around on its single foot, which also makes it taller and therefore harder to land Pikmin on its head. And you don't want to leave Pikmin attacking its foot as they'll be easy targets. The fight was largely the same as the ones I've had with various Burrowing Snagrets, basically wait for it to emerge and try to land Pikmin on the back and sides of its head, but I did switch it up sometimes and throw all my Purples at it when it had trouble emerging from the ground (another trait it shares with Burrowers), as it would sustain too much damage and immediately burrow underground again. And a few times I petrified it so my Pikmin would have more time to inflict damage. Between said petrifications and Spicy Spraying my Purples to increase their attack power and speed them up to better avoid the Snagret, I wound up burning through my whole supply of Bitter Sprays (I only had about 5 going into the fight) and most of my Spicy ones before the bloody thing finally died. Oh, and I lost another seven Purples. Maybe I'm just not very good at fighting Snagrets, maybe I've been spoiled by the really easy bosses of the previous two caves, but this really wasn't an enjoyable fight. Afterwards I broke down the walls and threw a Blue into each of the Queen Candypops to build my numbers back up again after all those conversions, so I at least exited the cave with a full 100 Pikmin, even if it wasn't the same proportions as when I went in. I also cracked open the remaining eggs to mature my new Blues and whatever other Pikmin that needed it. No sprays, unfortunately... Then I retrieved the treasure the Snagret had been guarding (Justice Alloy, 100 pokos) and gained the "Metal Suit Z", which increases Olimar and Louie's defensive capabilities. Which will be useful, because Olimar got pretty banged up in this latest cave, mainly in the floor with the Cannonball Beetle Larvae. After that, I was finally able to get the hell out of this godforsaken pit, never to return...
Sunset was closing in fast when I emerged back at the landing site, so I felt there was little to do other than end the day. I've now passed the 80% mark, and completely cleared out the Awakening Wood. I never have to return here again except maybe to propogate more Pikmin and harvest more berries. Now I have to look ahead at the remaining areas/caves in the Perplexing Pool and Valley of Repose and decide where I'm going to get those last 1,865 pokos.
Oh, and apparently upon collecting the Taste Sensation, Meat Satchel and Triple Sugar Threat (along with the Hideous Victual and Meat of Champsions collected in the Glutton's Kitchen), I completed the "Gourmet Series" of treasures, which means I can now read The Ship's sales pitches for each item. So that's pretty cool and somewhat amusing.

Next time: Access All Areas - Part 2

P.S. If the Pikmin statistics below seem a bit weird, that's because they are. I apparently lost track of my Yellows at some point and as a result my statistics for the last couple of days my Pikmin counts haven't added up right. I can confirm that the Red, Purple, White and Blue counts are accurate, but I'm having to start my Yellow count over from the current total. Seriously, I have no idea where those 100-odd extra Yellows came from. I do know that I sprouted 11 today, however, and that none died.

Okay, I've got everything figured out, mostly, so now I can crack on with it. Two entries today.

Day 17
I decided to land in the Perplexing Pool as I haven't been back there since I met the Blues, who would obviously open up a lot more options in this waterlogged area. Upon landing I immediately headed over to the wooden bridge by the two bitter Burgeoning Spiderworts to make sure it wasn't under threat by Sheargrubs like the one in Awakening Wood, but it wasn't so I was free to march out with a squad of Reds and Purples to kill any enemies in my path or around the Spiderworts (just Shearwigs, Whiskerpillars and a Fiery Blowhog). After this, leaving the corpses/pellets for later, I put away all Reds & Purples and withdrew 20 Whites, 20 Blues and 50 Yellows. I sent Louie off with the Whites to collect berries while Olimar took the Blues and Yellows to an un-built bridge and an electric fence that blocked off a walled area in a corner of the map that was apparently decorated with bathroom tiles. Yeah, that seemed weird to me too. Anyway, there was a curved path over the water around to the bridge that would have to be built in order to reach the electric fence, but it was thin and had no walls so instead I had to throw the Yellows up onto a raised walkway that went alongside the path (and had a low wall to stop them falling off) and guide them around to the small island with the bridge sticks. After that it was a simple matter to build the bridge and knock down the fence. Beyond it, in the tiled area, there were some Wogpoles and an underwater rock like the one I had seen near The Ship/Onions in Awakening Wood, so I had the Blues break it and all the water in the tiled area, and the large pond it was connected to, drained away allowing non-Blue Pikmin to explore more of the terrain. Breaking the plug also revealed a hole, but I didn't recieve any data about what might be inside. Instead, The Ship reminded me about teamwork and dividing tasks between the two captains, which I was already doing, before I started trying to break the plug. As far as advice and information go, it's really not a very helpful machine...
Anyway, I had the Blues kill the now-helpless Wogpoles and carry their corpses back to the Onion, but unfortunately I hadn't realised that they'd be crossing the path of a new enemy that had previously been underwater in the now-drained pond: the Toady Bloyster. Basically imagine a pale pink/purple sea slug with some kind of bud-like protrusion on its back. Thankfully it only managed to get the last two Blues in the convoy with the tentacles it can shoot out, so I headed back to the Onions, put away some Blues, took out some Reds and Purples again and went to get revenge, throwing them onto the bulb on its back which seems to be its only vulnerable point. It went down with no casualties and spat out a "10" pellet and the Aquatic Mine treasure (80 pokos). I had the Reds carry the treasure back to The Ship and then collected the corpse and pellet with the Blues. Sunset was fast approaching by this point, so I had Louie finish up with the berries and make his Whites carry the Shearwig and Blowhog corpses/pellets extra-fast to random Onions before the day ended. The Whiskerpillars had been collected earlier as they don't seem to actually die when their health is depleted so they can just wriggle off and return later if not carried to an Onion pretty soon.

Day 18
The enemies I'd killed yesterday hadn't respawned yet (except the Toady Bloyster, which was quickly killed again), so I could safely send Louie back to the Spiderworts with 20 Whites to harvest berries again while Olimar took 40 Reds and 15 Purples to explore the drained pond more thoroughly. Aside from the Bloyster there was just a pair of Yellow Wollywogs, which I must say I've gotten much better at defeating, though I also found an indestructable barrier that separated this pond from another one that went behind the Landing Site and connected to the stream that ran past the Citadel of Spiders and the see-saw blocks I had first used way back in my first day here. The Treasure Gauge also picked up something buried, so I went back to get some of the Whites that were now hanging around The Ship after delivering their berries so they could dig up the treasure (Fortified Delicacy, 60 pokos) enough for the non-White Pikmin to take over. The corpses and pellets left behind by the Bloyster and Wollywogs were also carried back and turned into what is technically known as "a crapload" of Blues.
I discovered that I would have to break down a black wall to access the pond behind the Landing Site, and sunset was closing in so I just killed three Water Dumples that were hanging around near the wall, losing two Blues in the process, and harvested their corpses before the day ended. Unfortunately I had apparently lost track of a Blue somewhere as it wound up getting left behind, and I didn't just find this out from the end-of-day statistics. Oh no, I actually saw the poor thing getting eaten by a Dwarf Bulbear and heard its accompanying squeal-then-whimper in the cutscene where The Ship and Onions blast off. I felt very guilty about that...

Three days today because, in the grand scheme of things, not much was done.

Day 19
Once again Louie was placed on berry-collecting duty with 20 Whites while Olimar took 80 Blues to knock down the wall I'd found yesterday. Eventually it fell, but unfortunately I lost 5 Blues to a Yellow Wollywog just beyond it. There were also two Water Dumples in the area but they went down without much of a fight. Quite natural, really, when you're being swarmed by 75 Pikmin. Anyway, there was a small land mass connected to the wall of the Landing Site (which happened to have a small dip in it) which, according to the Treasure Gauge, had something buried on it, so I left the Blues where they were and went around to collect some Whites that were now loitering around The Ship having delivered some berries, and threw them up onto the dip on the wall. I then went back around to the other side and whistled them down onto the land mass so they could dig up the treasure just enough for it to become visible so the Blues could take over. I then threw the Whites back up onto the wall and had the Blues start carrying the treasure back to the ship, as well as the enemy corpses/pellets. Unfortunately, and I swear the direction where the black wall used to be would have been a shorter trip, they decided to carry the spoils into the drained pond and back to the Landing Site from the opposite way I'd been travelling, so I escorted them in case they crossed the path of the Toady Bloyster. Thankfully they never got close enough to get its attention, so they could safely get the Onion Replica (30 pokos) to The Ship. I also whistled for the Blues carrying the corpses/pellets to drop them once they were out of the drained lake area so I could come back later with Reds or Yellows and build up their numbers. Next I went upstream with the Blues to clear the path for tomorrow's assignment, killing some Shearwigs, another Wollywog (lost another Blue) and a pair of Dwarf Bulbears. Unfortunately by then it was too late to go back and swap out my squad for Reds/Yellows, so I just had the Blues claim the most recent kills and set Louie's Whites to carry the earlier corpses/pellets to random Onions before sunset.
BTW, as you can see below, the Onion Replica is just an onion, and it gets its name from resembling a Pikmin ship/home. But the Pikmin ships/homes are called Onions because their shape reminded Olimar of an onion. So now the original thing is being called a replica of an object that was named after the original thing. This is a very strange game sometimes...

Day 20
This time instead of just sending Louie on his way with the usual 20 Whites, I had Olimar take out 40 Blues and Yellows and go with him to take out any enemies that might have respawned near the Burgeoning Spiderworts, namely Shearwigs, Whiskerpillars and a Swooping Snitchbug that got too close. I had some Yellows take the corpses back to their Onion and left Louie and the Whites to their usual berry harvesting while Olimar retrieved the now-idle Yellows and headed upstream, killing respawned Shearwigs and Dwarf Bulbears as I went. Remember waaay back on Day 8 I mentioned a treasure behind the electric fence that was right next to the stream, ensuring no Pikmin could knock it down so I had no idea how I was going to retrieve said treasure? Of course not, even if anyone's still reading this I doubt I can hold their attention well enough for them to remember something so minor from that long ago. Anyway, now that I have Blue Pikmin I have a means of accessing the treasure. Part-way along the stream there's an unbuilt bridge on the opposite bank, so I led the Blues through the water so they could build it and enable the Yellows to cross the stream. Beyond the bridge there was another of the Perplexing Pool's many hollow tree stump structures with a section of the wall that's lower than the rest. And what's on the other side of this gap that's perfect for throwing Yellow's over? The hollow stump with the treasure (Abstract Masterpiece, 100 pokos) behind the electric fence. All I had to do after this was whistle to get the Yellows' attention before they started trying to move the treasure and lead them around to the fence with the C-stick (it was a bit odd seeing Pikmin working from the opposite side of an obstacle, especially since electric fences have such big gaps in them). Then I just had to throw the Yellows back over the wall and bring the Blues around to get the treasure. I then had the remaining Blues/Yellows collect the enemy pellets of the same colour (I've heard that getting a pellet into the same-coloured Onion produces more Pikmin seeds), accidentally losing a Yellow to a Shearwig I missed, then put away all unoccupied Blues/Yellows and took out some Reds to get the remaining corpses/pellets. Unfortunately time was marching on, so I was forced to leave a lot of sprouts in the ground when The Ship and Onions took off. Thankfully buried Pikmin are ignored by enemies and can be plucked the following day.

Day 21
After plucking and putting away the Blue and Yellow sprouts, I took the new Red Pikmin and the usual 20 Whites over to the Spiderworts, anticipating a return of the Fiery Blowhog. It had indeed respawned and it was swiftly taken out with the Reds, but unfortunately both the corpse and the red "5" pellet it dropped landed in a nearby puddle, so I'd have to return later with some Blues to carry them to a position where the Reds can take over. Anyway, I left Louie and the Whites to their work while the Reds took a single Whiskerpillar back to the Onion, where I then put them all away and took out 80 Blues, ready to head upstream again. I had another black wall to knock down plus god knows what beyond it, so there wasn't a moment to lose. With this in mind I decided to petrify the lone Wollywog near the gate as I didn't want to waste time and risk my Pikmin. Plus I had 11 Bitter Sprays by this point, so I could easily part with one. I gave the Blues a Spicy Spray (really need more of those...), knocked down the wall and took down two Hermit Crawmads in the flooded area beyond, though I did lose one Pikmin in the process. I lost two more to some Water Dumples that were also nearby, and then had to contend with a Withering Blowhog. Once all the enemies had been taken care of I could turn my attention to the scenery, specifically the final hole of the Perplexing Pool which was completely underwater so only Blues would be able to enter it (The Ship also said deeper sections were submerged in liquid), and a set of four see-saw blocks that lead up to a high platform with the final treasure on it. Unfortunately the blocks were arranged in such a way that I couldn't really operate them with just one captain, so I'd have to come back tomorrow with Louie. So as I entered the final few hours I took my army up a nearby slope and dropped down into the same area as Louie's squad, killed a couple more Dwarf Bulbears (losing another Blue in the process) took the Blowhog corpse and pellet out of the water, came back with some Reds to collect them and called it a day.
Today wasn't as productive as I had hoped it would be, but the way I have things worked out I should hopefully be able to clear the debt in the next 2-3 days. 4 at the most. Probably. Actually, 2 days would be pretty ambitious...

Next time: Cleaning up in the Shower Room.

Day 22
Wanting to get things over with, I immediately took out 100 Blues (just in case), matured as many of the leaves as possible with egg nectar and headed over to yesterday's new area. I needed to make sure that Olimar and at least 20 Pikmin were raised up on the last see-saw block, so I started by having Olimar standing on the only ground level stone and had Louie throw Pikmin onto each stone in turn as Olimar made his way across to the last one. It wasn't long before Olimar and his new team were on the same level as the high platform with the Massage Girdle (100 pokos) and I escorted the carrier Pikmin back to the Onion in case of a Shearwig ambush or something. So that was the last above-ground treasure of the Perplexing Pool, now I had to tackle the last cave. Of this section of the playthrough, I mean. There's another cave I'll need to explore, the Submerged Castle, but there's no way in hell I'm attempting it anytime soon. The Shower Room is much more inviting, so I put away all but 20 Blues and took out 30 Reds, 20 Yellows, 20 Purples and 10 Whites, headed for the hole (avoiding the Toady Bloyster) and jumped in.
Remember how I mentioned the hole to the Shower Room was in an area that looked like it was covered in bathroom tiles? Well that's what the whole cave was like. Well, except for one floor, but I'll come to that later. Upon landing in the first floor I had to be wary straight away due to a White Wollywog being nearby, but I was able to kill it with no casualties. There were also some Wogpoles flopping around (some fell from the ceiling in certain areas, as did another Wollywog and a couple of boulders) as well as a pair of Watery Blowhogs, one of which was in a smaller chamber next to the Research Pod site while the other was roaming the second area that also had the exit hole. I had to lure the Wollywog away from the Blowhog (also no casualties) and then come back with just my Blues to kill the Blowhog itself. There were also a few electric nodes around the place, including blocking the exit hole, so I took them out with Yellows, claimed the Divine Cooking Tool (90 pokos) and moved on.
The main area of the second floor had a "tub" sunk into the middle of the ground with a Dwarf Orange Bulborb, a falling rock and the Durable Energy Cell treasure (160 pokos), while two more Dwarf Bulborbs, an adult and a new enemy called a Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat (basically a hovering jellyfish with glowing yellow spots that sucks up Pikmin and slowly digests them) patrolled the higher area around it. Well, the adult was actually asleep as usual. There were also some poison spouts, one blocking the exit hole, and a black wall with a treasure behind it. This area was connected to the Research Pod site (which had another Dwarf Bulborb nearby) via two exits: a short one near the Jellyfloat and a longer one near the adult Bulborb. I took the latter while scouting and accidentally managed to get the Bulborb to fall into the tub, where it became stuck. It was trying to get back to its sleeping spot, but the AI wouldn't allow it to use the slope on the opposite side of the tub so it just kept walking into the wall. This made it much easier to kill as I could just throw Purples down on top of it. I then jumped down with the rest of my army, killed the Dwarf Bulborb (the falling rock had already been triggered during scouting), headed up the slope, killed the Jellyfloat using the same tactics as airborne Blowhogs (weigh down with Purples then swarm when it falls), swarmed the two remaining Dwarf Bulborbs and knocked out the poison spouts with my Whites. The only tricky part after this came after I knocked down the wall to get at the Sud Generator treasure (60 pokos). I don't know if it had always been there or if it dropped from the ceiling, but a final Dwarf Bulbear appeared behind the treasure in the alcove and managed to munch one of my Purples before I could swarm it properly. So much for no casualties in this final (for now) dungeon...
The third floor had three paths leading off the Research Pod site (which had a pair of Lesser Jellyfloats that I had to take care of right away). The first had a Water Dumple and led around to a Hermit Crawmad in a small pool, but it didn't have a treasure so I left it alone. The second path, which had two entrances, contained the exit hole, a black wall with an egg behind it (and a Wollywog that dropped from the ceiling and killed 6 Blues), a small pool with another Dumple that snapped up another Blue but I petrified and killed it before it could swallow (and got a free Spicy Spray), and a Greater Spotted Jellyfloat (bigger, pink spots and sucks up captains as well) that yielded the Mirrored Stage treasure (140 pokos). The Greater Jellyfloat was actually the first enemy I killed in that passage as it was attracted by the presence of Olimar and Louie. The final path led to a large area with two Lesser Jellyfloats, two Dumples and two treasures, the Vorpal Platter and the Scrumptious Shell (both 60 pokos), the latter of which was behind a wall. The trick was to first lure each enemy closer, which was easier with the Jellyfloats, and kill them one at a time. Incidentally, the Vorpal Platter took my funds up to 9,015 pokos, pushing me over the 90% clearance mark. Less than 1,000 pokos left to go!
The fourth floor was a rather curious one. Instead of bathroom tiles it consisted of a network of drain-like pipes with plant life here and there. There were two larger chambers with sunlight shining through grates in the ceiling and a pair of Queen Candypop Buds (I used one to replenish my supply of Blues, plus one extra due to the space left by the dead Purple on the second floor), a leaf treasure (Arboreal Frippery, 10 pokos) up in the end of a high pipe so I threw a Yellow up to collect it, and, rather oddly, an exit geyser. If I wanted to I could quit right now and leave with the treasures I've collected so far. But I don't, so I didn't.
The Research Pod site of the fifth floor was between two larger chambers and was inhabited by two Withering Blowhogs, which were swiftly taken down before they could actually do any withering. Both chambers were accessible through a short path in the middle and a longer path that led around to the side of the respective rooms where there were fewer enemies. One chamber's paths were blocked by fire geysers and the other was blocked off by a pair of walls. The room blocked by geysers had a huge pile of sand in one corner, on which were about four or five Dwarf Orange Bulborbs, as well as a Wollywog near the geyser that blocked the long path. Another Purple was killed by this creature, but all of the Dwarf Bulborbs went down with little trouble, though it was a small struggle getting the Pikmin to swarm up the steep pile. Next to the sand pile, and indeed what the sand was piled against along with the cave wall, was a large structure with a grate on top of it and a treasure (Permanent Container, 130 pokos) in some running water under that, so I threw some Blues down to collect it. The other room was accessible through the two walls and contained two Dwarf Orange Bulborbs, two Fiery Blowhogs, two fire geysers and two treasures, one of which was lying on the floor (Happiness Emblem, 100 pokos) and the other (Merciless Extractor, 90 pokos) was on top of a small platform that I would have to use to transport my non-Blue Pikmin past the small puddle that blocked off the exit hole. Not wanting to risk my Blues, I instead punched the Dwarf Bulborb that was in the puddle to death with Olimar, swarmed the other Dwarf, and took out the Blowhogs and geysers with my Reds.
There was another Wollywog right near the Research Pod on the sixth floor, but this time I had to actually move my Pikmin out of the way as it was close enough to leap straight away. Almost immediately after killing the Wollywog I spotted a sleeping Orange Bulborb with its back to me and three Dwarf Orange Bulborbs nearby. I decided to petrify the whole lot of them with a couple of Bitter Sprays as I didn't want to risk attracting the Dwarfs' attention while I was killing the adult. There were three passages leading off the Research Pod site, the first of which was behind a wall and had some Dwarf Orange Bulborbs with the final one in a small puddle that also contained the Rubber Ugly treasure (90 pokos), so I punched it to death with Olimar again, then brought the rest of my army to swarm the other Dwarfs and sent the Blues to collect the treasure. The second path was a very short one and just had a black wall with the Behemoth Jaw treasure (100 pokos). It seemed simple, but as my Pikmin started to carry the treasure back to the Pod, they were ambushed by an Anode Dweevil (a yellow version of the Fiery Dweevil that can shock Pikmin instead of breathing fire) which stole it, so I had to retreat and come back to take it back with my Yellows. The final passage, which had the exit hole behind a wall at the end of it, was a short straight line with four pipe-like alcoves leading off it, while the passage itself was being patrolled by a Bumbling Snitchbug. This creature is much the same as a Swooping Snitchbug, but it goes after captains instead of Pikmin, so I had to lure it close with Olimar and then have Louie come in with the Pikmin to take it down with my usual tactics for airborne enemies (weigh down with Purples and swarm with the rest when the enemy falls). I had to be careful with all this, however, as three of the four alcoves had Dweevils in them. One was an Anode Dweevil, another was a Munge Dweevil (pink/purple and breathes poison), but by far the most dangerous was the Volatile Dweevil, which is basically a Dweevil with a Bomb Rock on its back, so by necessity that was actually the first enemy in the passage I dealt with. Just wake it up, run away and maybe try to lure it close to another enemy to take them out as well when it explodes. No such luck in that department, but it's not exactly difficult to kill dweevils anyway. A little time-consuming with just 10 Whites for the Munge dweevil, but not difficult. Anyway, in the final alcove was the final treasure of the floor (Plentiful Tank, 50 pokos) which I collected before moving on to the cave finale.
So here we are. The final floor of the final cave of this half of the game. The Research Pod area was separated from the boss arena by a series of winding, criss-crossing passages full of walls that needed to be broken down, with the exit geyser behind another wall in the boss arena. I made my way to one of the possible entrances to the arena and came face-to-face with the Ranging Bloyster, which is essentially a larger version of the Toady Bloyster that also has a longer reach with its tentacles when it attacks. Another difference is that instead of going after the Pikmin, the Ranging Bloyser tracks the captain that is currently being controlled by the player and when it gets close enough it lashes out to grab any Pikmin that might be nearby. Fortunately this predatory technique is rather easy to exploit. First I had Louie run out to get behind the Bloyster (what? Bosses always delegate unpleasant tasks to their subordinates). Then once it had turned to face him I had Olimar come out and start throwing Pikmin at the bulb on its back, its only weak spot. All I had to do was keep switching back to Louie when it was about to turn and get Olimar's Pikmin and have Olimar stay behind it to have easy access to the weak point. It was pretty nerve-wracking, especially as Pikmin ended up getting thrown all over the place as it kept turning to follow Louie, but I was thankfully able to wear it down with no Pikmin casualties and claim the Amplified Amplifier treasure (100 pokos), which The Ship developed into the Mega Tweeter, greatly increasing the range of the captains' whistles. I then knocked down the wall blocking the geyser and blasted out.
After landing back by The Ship and Onions and getting the "90% Debt Cleared" fanfare, I went to re-mature any Pikmin in my current squad that had been reduced to leaves. I threw a Purple onto the eggs, as I now always do wherever possible, and sure enough a swarm of Mitites sprang out of one. I threw a couple more Purples, killing the Mitites with their shockwaves, got a whole load of nectar as a result, re-matured my entire army and had my Yellows carry the corpses back to their Onion, finally bringing their numbers up to over 300 like the Reds and Blues. I spent the last remaining hours collecting a few more berries, because there are no Burgeoning Spiderworts where I'm going next. Where is that, you ask? Why, back where this whole adventure started, of course! With both the Awakening Wood and Perplexing Pool completed, it's finally time to return to the Valley of Repose and clear the last little bit of the debt.

Next Time: The Final Push.

Day 23
First of all I forgot to mention in the previous day's entry that the collection of the Sud Generator, Mirrored Stage and Behemoth Jaw (along with the Flame of Tomorrow, Impediment Scourge, Time Capsule and Lip Service collected on earlier days) has completed the Modern Amenities series, so I can now read The Ship's sales pitches for each of those items.

Anyway, back to today. The Landing Site was surrounded by Pellet Posies, including a "10" one on a ledge, that were ripe for picking, but since I had more than enough Pikmin I decided to leave them and harvest them if I had time near the end of the day. So instead I took out 80 Blues and 20 Purples and led them into the large circular area near the Landing Site which seems to be positioned on top of a manhole to kill the Dwarf Red Bulborb and sleeping adult Red Bulborb hanging around there, leaving their corpses/pellets again for the end of the day. I made my way beyond the Emergence Cave and, leaving Louie and the Purples behind, entered the pool which had prevented any further exploration and forced me to move on to the Awakening Wood all the way back in the first days of the adventure. On one side was a shortcut back to the Landing Site (connected to the ledge with the "10" Pellet Posie), and on the other was a wall that blocked another section of the pond and the entire rest of the overworld (I'd only explored about 1/3 of it at this point). I set the Blues to work on it and explored the surrounding area. A nearby snowdrift set the Treasure Gauge off so I sent Louie back to the Ship to put away 10 Purples and withdraw 10 Whites. He returned shortly after the Blues broke through, and I then had them attack the rock seal on the other side of the wall so the pond would drain away and enable the Whites to cross over to the snowdrift and start digging up the Spiny Alien Treat (50 pokos).
Meanwhile, I had Olimar take the Blues over to another, smaller pond right nearby that had a pair of Water Dumples in it, killed them and headed up the slope where I was confronted by two Fiery Blowhogs, a Cloaking Burrow-nit and a pair of new enemies called Decorated Cannon Beetle Larvae! These are essentially red versions of Armoured Cannon Beetle Larvae but are potentially more dangerous, as I'll explain in a minute. Luckily I was able to dodge the enemies (the Larvae were wandering around, BTW, not half-stuck in the ground) and work my way around to a bundle of sticks that could be built into a bridge allowing other Pikmin types to ascend to this area. Not just yet, though. Intead I had Olimar leave the Blues at the safe end of the bridge/slope and return to the enemy area alone. As I was saying, Decorated Cannon Beetle Larvae are potentially very dangerous as instead of just firing rocks in a straight line, they track and home in on captains (explained in the Piklopedia as being magnetically attracted to the metal in the captains' suits). This can be used to the player's advantage however, as not only is it easier to trick the Larvae into killing other enemies than it is with their Armoured cousins, and you can even make them accidentally kill themselves with their own rocks, so I wouldn't even have to worry about risking my Pikmin to take down the one remaining Larva. I think the word is "result".
By this point the final hours of the day were rapidly approaching so I had the Blues carry back the various corpses and pellets (including those from the Bulborbs earlier), but had Louie whistle them away once they entered the Landing Site. I then put away 60 Blues and took out some Yellows and Reds to take their place and simply swarmed all my Pikmin (including the Purples & Whites) over the big pile of dropped corpses/pellets. Once they were all collected I harvested the Pellet Posies and ended the day. No sprouts to pluck as I already had 100 Pikmin in the field.

Just one more day and a little over 200 pokos to go. Let's do this thing.

Day 24
This is it. By the end of today I would have cleared the debt. As there were no enemies or hazards today (well, actually there was one but I'll come to that later) I could feel free to take out 20 of each Pikmin type and listen to them singing a portion of "Ai no Uta" from the first game as I went about my business. Or at least, that's what it's supposed to be, but I didn't hear much resemblance. Anyway, I went through the drained pond, up the new bridge onto the area where all the enemies had been yesterday, turned left and ended up in a place that's connected to the manhole area by a ledge. On one side of this area was a high ledge with my next treasure on it: the Fossilised Ursidae (160 pokos). Trouble is it was too high for even Yellows to reach, so I had to walk up a nearby small snowdrift and throw them up onto a small path that led to the treasure. The Yellows would automatically walk along it and start trying to lift the treasure, but unfortunately it required 25 Pikmin so I was 5 short. So I had Louie take 5 Reds and put them back in their Onion, withdraw 5 more Yellows and throw them up onto the ledge. Immediately after the treasure dropped off the ledge I called the Yellows back, threw 20 of them back onto the treasure and had 5 Blues take up the slack. Louie then escorted the treasure back to the Landing site where he swapped the 5 Yellows for Reds again. Meanwhile I had Olimar go back to the drained pond, where there's a small path over a big snowdrift that comes out on another ledge by the manhole area. I waited until the treasure had been collected and Louie had returned, not wanting any interruptions, dismissed the Pikmin except the Purples and advanced. About halfway along I was ambushed by the final enemy I would have to face in this half of the game. And the reason I chose the treasure this creature was guarding as the final one of my playthrough? Because I felt a fitting way to end the game would be to take on my nemesis one last time: the Burrowing Snagret.
There was much less room to manoeuvre here than in other Snagret fights, but I was still able to stay out of its reach until I was ready to strike. This time I wasn't at all short on Bitter Sprays (and I would have nothing else to use them on for a long time), so the moment it got stuck coming out of the ground I petrified it, hit my Purples with a Spicy Spray and completely pwned the bastard. I know a lot of better players will regard a Burrowing Snagret as being small potatoes and I've probably been going about killing them the wrong way throughout this playthrough, but I don't care. I've hated this species of enemy for a long time so any victory is one I shall celebrate. Anyway, being petrified it left no remains, but it gave out two "5" pellets, four blobs of nectar and a free Spicy Spray. I set the Yellows to carry the pellets to their Onion while the Whites dug up the buried Pink Menace treasure (100 pokos) that had been under the Snagret's territory.
And that was it. As soon as the Pink Menace was picked up by The Ship I got the "You've repaid the entire debt!" fanfare and was sent straight into the ending cutscene. The Ship blasts off back to Hocotate, but upon looking back at the planet just before entering hyperspace, Olimar discovers that Louie isn't in his cockpit! He's been left behind! Whoops... Still, at least that means we get treated to a nice video of Louie exploring real-world nature environments accompanying the credits.

Alas, poor Louie, we hardly knew ye.

But yeah, congrats on beating the game. What do you think of Pikmin 2, in general?

Thanks. And overall it's a great game. I will say, however, that I much prefer the overworld stuff to the caves. Yes, you don't have a time limit in the caves, but since you have unlimited days then that doesn't matter very much. You just have to make sure you take on the map a section at a time so you're not having to kill the same enemies every time you go in certain directions.
Actually, with the apparent ditching of caves in Pikmin 3, that could well end up being my favourite Pikmin game in terms of structure. Okay, you have to keep collecting fruit so your captains don't starve, but as long as you do that you can mess around as much as you want, I think. And I've proven to myself that I can indeed beat a Pikmin game without cheating, so the only remaining concern I have about 3 is the lag on my TV.

My only real complaint about Pikmin 2 is the absence of co-op story mode, or at least a means of programming instructions into your other captain. You can split the party up, but you have to personally control each captain to get them where you want them to go. It sounds like they've fixed this a bit in 3, but not entirely. You can at least issue orders to other captains to go certain places. You probbably still need to keep an eye on them, however. Dumb AI and all that.

So I picked up Animal Crossing: New Leaf a little while ago, inspired partly by ILS's blog (I'm a bit of a sheep, really), and so far I'm finding it surprisingly enjoyable. I say "surprisingly" because I tried out Wild World back when it came out and wasn't really that impressed by it. Maybe I just didn't "get" this kind of game, maybe it was just too slow for me, but I understand now that Animal Crossing is the kind of game to be taken a little bit at a time at a steady pace. So I thought I may as well document my experiences here. Ooh, I can just feel the energy draining out of the room...

Catch-Up: The First Two Weeks
It was just over two weeks ago, on the 16th of July, that I finally felt secure enough in my decisions to actually start the game I'd bought a few days previously. Unfortunately I ended up starting pretty late so I really only had time to enter my town, attend the tree-planting ceremony, choose a plot of land and scrape together enough bells to buy myself a bed for my tent. My lovely assistant Isabelle was kind enough to donate a lantern she'd found in the town hall, so it wasn't too bad a first night.

I was just some random guy who showed up and they made me their new mayor. Little did I know these eccentric citizens were starting as they meant to go on...

I'm currently paying off the second expansion of my actual house (situated more-or-less right in the middle of town, just south of the plaza and north of the river), and I've reached the point where I'm really having to think about changing things up in terms of decoration. Especially as I'm running low on storage space.

That Billiards Table is normally in the middle, and the Bishop has since been painted and joined by another Bishop and a Rook.

Next thing to do would probably be to introduce the other residents of Ambridge, starting with the five that already lived here before I moved in:

Nate the bear

Nate was the first villager I actually spoke to. He seems nice, if slightly simple, and talks about food a fair amount. Within seconds of meeting him, however, I had already started formulating plans. Namely to change his catchphrase to "oh bother" and somehow get him to wear a red vest.

Catchphrase: "yawwwn"

Avery the eagle

I wasn't really sure what to think of Avery at first, since the first time I spoke to him he sounded encouraging of me being mayor, but then laughed when he saw me after being stung by a bee. He was, however, also the first character to invite me to his house, as opposed to me just entering when he happened to be in, and has generally been one of the nicer villagers. He also has a pretty cool wild west thing going on with his house.

Catchphrase: "skree-haw"

Bluebear the cub

Bluebear is probably Isabelle's main competitor for most adorable citizen of Ambridge, though she seems to be a bit more vain and concerned with trends, having cool new things and being the centre of attention. She's probably the villager that's most often asked me to suggest a new greeting/catchphrase (I still haven't done so), becomes concerned that new villagers are cooler than her, and refers to letters she recieves as "fan mail". Most of the time she's very cheerful and possibly a little ditzy (for example she sometimes becomes a bit confused if you talk to her a lot in a single day). She also came up with the nickname "Sweet-B" for me, which... I'm actually okay with.

Catchphrase: "peach"

Dora the mouse

I think Dora may well be my favourite villager right now. She's cute, being a mouse and all, and has been polite and friendly to me right from the off. Unlike certain other villagers she actually showed concern when she saw my stung face. She also seems to be rather studious, given that her house looks like it's full of books, she seems to be a pretty regular museum visitor, and she quite frequently asks me to catch different specimens she's taken an interest in. She does sometimes ask me for things that are a little too interesting, though, like a hammerhead shark (which unfortunately I failed to get for her). She's also picked up on Bluebear's trend of calling me "Sweet-B".

Catchphrase: originally "squeaky", but seems to have started copying Avery's "skree-haw".

Antonio the anteater

If I'm interpreting my list of town residents correctly, Antonio was the last character to move into Ambridge before I did, and honestly in the early days I found him to be kind of a jerk. He started out by taking a jab at my physical fitness (or at least that's how I interpreted it) and then he laughed his ass off at my stung face. He seems to be rather vain and obsessed with training his "bod", and frequently calls me "bro". Still, as the days went on I've become more used to him, we've gotten to know each other better and he even asked me to come up with a new greeting for him ("OH YEAH!"). He also entrusted me with burying a time capsule for him yesterday.

Catchphrase: "honk"

Portia the dog

Portia was the first resident to move in after I became mayor, and to begin with she came across as rather... let's say hot-and-cold, calling me "ruffian", chasing me away from treasure buried around her property, laughing at my stung face and generally seeming pleasant one moment and mean the next. But as time has gone by I've found her becoming one of my favourite villagers (it helps that she seems to like my limited decorating skills), so you can imagine my horror when yesterday she mentioned to me that she was planning to move away! And on a bridge in the pouring rain to give the scene even more impact! Thankfully she seemed to be pretty easy to persuade to stay (the only other option was "Okay, bye." which seemed a bit short and indifferent), so I'm breathing easier. I just hope that's really it and she's not just going to move anyway. She's a nice bitch, really. What? That's the correct term...

Catchphrase: "ruffian"

Agnes the pig

For quite a while after Agnes moved in, I wasn't sure what to make of her. In one of our first conversations she apparently tricked me into taking a t-shirt she no longer wanted, and in another she seemed to suspect Bluebear and Nate of plotting something together (yeah, I really don't think we have anything to worry about there...). However, she's also given me tips on feng shui and actually gave me medicine when I recently spoke to her after being attacked by bees. At first she thought someone had beaten me up and wanted to get them back, but upon realising the truth she gave me a lecture on paying more attention to my surroundings and then handed the medicine over. It felt quite nice, really.

Catchphrase: "snuffle"

Curlos the sheep

Curlos is another character I'm not quite sure about yet. Overall he seems pretty decent, if a little full of himself, but this percieved coolness actually caused him to compliment both me and Ambridge, saying that it must be pretty cool to draw someone like him here. I've also managed to persuade him to buy the first item I put on the Re-Tail flea market (a Lemon Table), though I'm not sure how well it'll go in his house, yet. Not that I have a huge amount of faith in his sense of taste, though, given that he has two gyroids in his house, one of which looks like it's screaming and contorting... *shudder*

Catchphrase: originally "shearly", but seems to have started copying Avery's "skree-haw".

Until now, I honestly had no idea just how few pictures I'd taken of him so far...

Axel the elephant

Axel is the newest resident of Ambridge, and honestly he's probably the only one I'm not currently sure I like. The others are pretty neutral or at least leaning more towards like rather than dislike. I'm not sure what it is, maybe because, being another Jock personality, he's pretty similar to Antonio (he even recently repeated a conversation I'd had with Antonio the day before, word-for-word), though a bit more childish as evidenced by his decorations and suspecting that stag beetles might try and take over the world. He also seems a little more aggressive than Antonio, though maybe I just need more time to warm up to him. His sheer randomness is helping with that. What isn't helping, however, is his design, which can sometimes result in some rather bone-chilling stares...

Catchphrase: "WHONK!"

What else... Well, my Main Street is coming along pretty nicely. Nookling Junction has recently upgraded to T&T Mart, Leif has set up his Gardening Store, and Kicks, the newest addition, finally finished construction a few days ago. Which is good, because after accidentally leaving my default shoes on the Island, I'd been walking around barefoot for over a week. Oh, and Club LOL is currently under construction.

The Museum is also coming on well. I've donated lots of fish and bugs, a few single fossils (which I'm sure Blathers was especially grateful for after so many days where I would taunt him with fossils to appraise, only to sell them and donate a bug instead. Hey, a mayor's got to make money...) and even a work of art after Crazy Redd dropped by. I almost had another piece to donate, thanks to Avery, but the painting Redd had sold him turned out to be a fake... I'm currently working on expanding the Museum as my latest Public Works Project after a new bridge and a pair of street lamps. My currently prize contribution to the Museum is the Whale Shark I caught on the Island. It was the first shark I ever managed to fish up and his name is Bert.

I guess the only thing left to mention is the events that have gone on. Let's see... Saharah's visited my town three times, Katarina twice (I still have no idea what to do with her advice), Redd once, and Phineas once (he gave me an Insect Maniac badge).

Great. First day on the job and I already had gypsies...

Woah... You're twisting my melon, man...

Then of course there was the Bug-Off, which I won. Foolishly I went pretty high straight away with a Bee (74 points), not realising that the right strategy for maximum profit is to gradually work up through better bugs and keep beating your record, and so I spent the rest of the day trying to top it until I finally succeeded with a Horned Dynastid worth 76 points.

Some of my fellow competitors were gracious in defeat...

...others seemed less so.

So that's pretty much it for my first two-and-a-bit weeks in Ambridge. I promise the rest of my entries, for however long this lasts, probably won't be this long. To finish off, here's a rainbow...

...and the very first item I won from a Nookling fortune cookie.

Urgh... Already I'm failing at this.

Catch-Up: 2nd-4th August

2nd of August

Antonio, if you want me to get you an apple, just ask. Don't try to dress it up as a fun exercise. ¬_¬

Finally, some recognition! I seem to be the only one in this town that can actually catch fish...

Eh, I guess it could be worse...

Uh... Does it normally contain a cuckoo, by any chance?

Yep. I've literally donated a load of old crap.

He's changed his catchphrase again? It wasn't that long ago that he ditched "shearly" for "skree-haw"...

What the... Who has a manhole in their house?

You call that cluttered? This is cluttered.

If Mario touches a Bullet Bill he gets killed or severely weakened. I get one fired through my neck and I'm just fine. Wimp...

3rd of August

Is there a sale on somewhere or something?

Right. Shorts. Gotcha.

Is... Is that... Yes! It is! After two days of fireworks, T&T Mart finally has a fortune cookie! And it's not a dud!

...Too bad I already have an S.S. Dolphin...

Dora asked me if I would get a new piece of furniture for her. I chose an Alpine Shelf I found the other day as she already had the sofa and bed from that set.

Cool. Maybe you could replace that-

Wait, what?

You got rid of your TV but kept the manhole. I guess even Dora has her eccentricities...

4th of August

Nice to see Isabelle out and about for once. But wait a minute... What's that over to the right?

A stall at a summer festival... and run by a known crook? The prophecy is coming true! Still, my shorts should apparently protect me...

Okay, I like badges as much as the next guy, but the frequency of Phineas' visits is getting a little ridiculous.

Later, at the Fireworks Festival...

Uh, Isabelle? Why are you looking at me like that?

I wasn't really sure about the gift at first...

...But I soon got into the spirit of things.

This happened three times. This must be what Katrina warned me about! But the shorts do nothing!

Wait... I'm wearing the default shorts that don't actually show up as a wearable item. Does that mean they don't count...?

...SHOOOOOOOOOOOORTS!! (╯°□°)╯

Even when I finally won a prize it was lame.

Thankfully Isabelle, lovely person that she is, was there to help me take my mind off my curse.

And so I did.

So I'm a lazy bastard for only getting around to reading it now, but 'tis quite good. I like the way it's set up, with a lot of pictures. Gives quite a bit more detail, I'd say. Especially with the follow up pictures set up next to the others.

Catch-Up

Let's see... Well, Shampoodle and Club LOL have finally opened. I haven't tried out the salon yet, but I visited the Club on Saturday to catch K.K. Slider's first gig in Ambridge. His first acoustic gig, anyway, I haven't caught a DJ set yet. Now I finally have something to play on my Retro Stereo. And I was surprised to see the game's staff credits scrolling past during the performance.

I've also paid off my latest loan and gained a second floor for my house. Now I owe Tom Nook 298,000 bells... In other news related to money and second floors, I've completed the expansion for the Museum, unlocking the Museum shop (run by the rather cute Celeste) and the exhibition rooms. This latter thing was the most important part of the expansion to me, as I've started building up a collection of gyroids and no way in hell am I keeping those things in my house. And as the next public works project, I've started a fund for a third and final bridge.

Speaking of my house, it's dawned on me that I never got around to showing what my bottom floor (previously my only floor) looked like after I finally managed to decorate it following the previous expansion. So here it is, re-made for a special photoshoot.

This is only a small percentage of the crap I possess. I really need to have a clear out...

And now some random screenshots from the past week:

Finally! Those balloons have been taunting me for far too long...

Remember... Only YOU can support this town's entire economy and development. And get ripped off by Tanuki estate agents.

I like that word, and I want to try and use it more often in conversation.

Who the hell keeps planting these pitfall seeds every night!?

That's right. The town Jock has adopted the catchphrase of an adorable little blue bear cub.

Okay, so technically I have just broken into her house while she's asleep, but I think "evil" is a bit strong... And who sleeps standing up when there's a perfectly good bed about two feet away?

Damn... I wanted to wear it while carrying out my mayoral duties. What's that, Isabelle? You think power has gone to my head? What on earth would give you that idea?

Excuse me, I think you'll find I already am the Hero of Ambridge. I'm carrying this town.

A very stupid question and a blunt statement of fact.

Still, it's nice to get some recognition.

The plaza tree has reached the third stage, reminding me of how many days I've already spent here...
