One would imagine Squall could fight at Mid-range, considering his weapon is a gunblade.

Ah, contrary to the name, the gunblade doesn't actually work as a gun.

Yeah. Pulling the trigger fires the gun mechanism & sends a vibration/pulse through the blade, increasing the damage done.

Still, that's just the original FFVIII gunblades. Later ones in the series do also work as guns, leading up to the protagonist of the upcoming FFXIII, Lightning, whose weapon actually transforms between a gun form & sword form.

So in FFVIII it was like a work in progress?

I suppose. But I think the FFVIII ones are the only one that are officially called gunblades. A lot of the other ones, like the ones that appear in the FFVII compilation, are more like guns with blades attached to them.

New entry: Monday 14th September (2)

Destiny Odyssey VIII – The Lion Stalks The Savannah (Part 2)
Well, I’ve now finish Squall’s story, so I can give you a run-down of my progress through the last three levels.
I came across another 1HP Fallacious Wanderer like the one in level two. Despite now knowing how to deal with him, the fight was still around the same difficulty due to being on a very cramped stage: Pandaemonium. There was a boss battle with Kuja at the end of level three, which I actually found surprisingly easy. I didn’t lose much health and I went up two levels for my trouble.
Level 4 passed without much incident. Though there was an Ephemeral Phantom enemy (Jecht copy) that unexpectedly used a Magus Sisters summon on me. The Magus Sisters summon halves the opponent’s BP for a brief time. Unfortunately for him, my BP, even when halved, was still high enough to OHKO him, rendering the whole process rather pointless. The only other major thing on level 4 was a fight against a high-levelled False Stalwart enemy (Garland copy). This guy was five levels higher than me, and the fight was much more brutal than Firion’s similar battle against the Fallacious Tree enemy, mostly due to the fact that the False Stalwart didn’t just stand there. I was down to just sixty-something HP when I managed to deal the final blow. The boss fight against Warrior of Light was easy in comparison.
And so I progressed to the final level, where I found yet another 1HP Fallacious Wanderer. This battle, however, was much easier than the other two, as I had perfected my strategy for dealing with these enemies (they all even spammed the same single attack) and this battle was also set on Order’s Sanctuary, a very easy stage to navigate & fight on. The final boss of Squall’s story, Ultimecia, was by far the easiest final boss I’ve faced so far. It only took one try and even then I barely lost any health due to all her HP attacks missing me. The only drawback in the fight was when she used her Lich summon to reduce my BP to 0, but even then I quickly built it up again. And so I finished Squall’s story, and purchased Ultimecia from the PP catalogue as a reward. Oh, and I also encountered one of my favourite moments in a Dissidia cutscene so far: Zidane tackling Garland when the latter was about to attack Squall from behind.

Next time: From lion to monkey! Zidane steals the show!

I'll reserve judgement until after I've played as him.

Not having played FFIX, I wouldn't really know. Still, I'll get some insight when I play through his story.
