I don't know... I always thought it was by a set percentage. Like, there's a 5% chance you'll encounter pokemon A on route X.

It's a combination of the two. Here:

http://www.serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/pokewalker-area.shtml

Okay, that makes sense, but after coming back from my walk I left the Pokewalker alone for a long time, and the counter had returned to 0. However, when I actually returned Lightyear to SS, it said I'd taken over 4000 steps, which would be more than enough to find Kangaskhan or Doduo in Refreshing Field.

My question is whether pokemon like that only have a chance of appearing while the pokewalker's counter is more than a certain number of steps, or if the steps are cumulative. Like, if I were to go on another walk in Refreshing Field, could I potentially come across those pokemon right away (having apparently taken 4000 steps), or would I have to take another 2000/3000 steps before I could find them?

Sorry If I'm not making sense...

Steps aren't cumulative, they depend on the current walk.

Okay, thanks... I'll just have to remember to use the poke radar before the counter decreases next time.

Tuesday 20th April

2:49pm
Okay, I didn't miss anything in New Bark Town or on Route 29, so I'm heading to Cherrygrove.

Oh, but I did come across Tuscany of Tuesday on Route 29, who gave me a TwistedSpoon.

2:53pm
I got a Mystic Water from the guy on the island in the middle of the big bit of sea in Cherrygrove. That's all I can do right now, so I'm off to Route 30.

3:56pm
There wasn't anything on Route 30 or Route 31, so I moved on to Violet City and got the two items on either side of the bridged lake: a PP Up and a Rare Candy.

Now, before I forget, I'm heading over to the National Park to take part in today's Bug-Catching Contest.

4:03pm
The contest has now started. Wish me luck...

4:09pm
I just caught a Pinsir. It's only level 14, so it probably won't be enough for me to win, but that's still another rare pokemon down, so I'm not too bothered. I'm now just going to wait for the contest to finish.

4:22pm
Third place... Not bad. Certainly better than my previous efforts. I'd like to know how the hell Bug Catcher Don manages to win every single time, though...

I decided to call my new Pinsir Murcott.

6:38pm
Okay, after that rather long break, I'm heading off to the Ruins of Alph.

6:45pm
I've crossed the little lake near the bottom of the area, and it's time to solve the second puzzle...

6:48pm
It's an Aerodactyl! If I come across any newly-released Unown types, I'm going to catch one.

6:52pm
Didn't catch any Unown. Onwards to Route 32...

6:54pm
I just got TM05 Roar from a strange shouty man on Route 32. You come across some weird types in these games...

7:28pm
I just caught an Onix in Union Cave. I called him Molar.

7:37pm
I just caught a Spearow on Route 33. Just in time too, since they don't appear there past 8pm. I called him Atmey.

7:46pm
Heading back out onto Route 33 after resting in Azalea Town. Why? Hopefully you'll see...

8:11pm
Well, I just caught a Heracross. Yup, I'm using Headbutt on trees. It was tricky, though... Even though it was only level 4 and I had it's HP in the red, it broke out of two Poke Balls and one Great Ball. I eventually caught it with a Premier Ball after putting it to sleep with Mesmero's Hypnosis. I named him Atlas.

8:42pm
Geez, another tough capture... Even after putting it to sleep and getting its HP in the red, it took 4 Poke Balls and a Great Ball to finally capture this Aipom. Still, I guess I'm fairly lucky in a different way, as I came across one almost straight away. Anyway, I named her Samba.

12:40am
After that fairly long break, I'm about to head into Ilex Forest. Before that, however, I'm visiting the Charcoal Kiln.

12:42pm
The Charcoal Man's apprentice gave me, surprise, surprise, some Charcoal! Right, off to the forest...

12:48am
Well, at least I won't be short of trees to Headbutt in here...

Speaking of which, I can't believe all this tree-shaking can be good for Mesmero's head (and therefore his psychic powers)...

12:57am
I just used Cut on that one tree in the forest, and I thought it was pretty cool how Pitcher (who's currently the one following me) jumped in front of me and actually cut down the tree. I haven't used a field move while the user was at the front of my party before...

1:06am
Well that could've gone better. My first attempt at catching a Pineco, and it uses SelfDestruct as soon as I get its health in the red. Still, I shall learn from this...

1:29am
It really doesn't do much for a trainer's self-esteem when a pokemon basically commits suicide rather than be captured...

1:38am
Mesmero just "suddenly danced with happiness". Either he's actually enjoying this, or all this headbutting has dislodged something in his brain...

1:55am
Yes! Got one! I shall call him Bastion. I'm sure Mesmero will be happy to finally leave this place and have a good night's rest...

Speaking of which, I'll be doing the same. This will be my last update for tonight, so see you all tomorrow.

Nice indeed. And it took me ages to decide on a name for him... Definately one of the most difficult ones I've had.

Heh. Great minds think alike. My younger brother's Heracross is named Heracles.

I don't like my nicknames to have any part of the pokemon's real name in them if I can avoid it. It feels like, say, calling a white cat Snowy or something. Obviously Heracles isn't as bad as that (it's actually pretty good), but it's still to similar for my liking...

I understand that and agree, and so does he. We just thought that the coincidence of it sounding similar was too good to pass up, considering the names actual origin.

You mean the "Hera" of Heracross coming from Heracles?

No, the origin of the name Heracles, and the significance of the character. But yes, that too.

Sonata and Absolem stand out as good ones to me, not a fan of Roxxor.
