You might as well drop it after episode 25 anyways, the rest of the story is stupid. Well, the last episode is pretty damn good just to see what happens with Light, but other than that I really couldn't care about Melo and Near at all.
Try to wait until after he's done to say it sucks so that you lessen the likelihood of you tainting his memory of the show |

But that is irrelevant to what his memory of watching the show is like. He may blissfully enjoy the show because he kept his willingly suspending his disbelief (thus ignoring/looking past any stupidity of the plot) and even if he realizes it was dumb in retrospect, he still has that memory of enjoying the last few episodes that he can cherish.
If you make him realize that it sucks now though, he'll think of that while he watches those last few episodes, thus robbing him of that fleeting satisfaction of the show.
