Okay, this is a more "classic" Castlevania. Its fairly linear when compared to a newer one (think more Super Mario Bros than Metroid). It still has secrets and different passageways and such though so there is replay value if that's a concern, and for 10 dollars its a good buy.
Story is insignificant. The controls work fine. You get the main whip attack and one of five subweapons (you find them in the levels).
Again, more Mario than Metroid.
Short and with odd music but it shows the basics. Also, the series has my favorite video game music ever, bar none.

Even though I enjoyed them (to varying degrees) I wouldn't recommend Judgment (or any 3D Title, really).

I don't know if there was a demo out for Lament. I played the demo for Curse or Darkness before hand.
I love Lament, I will say that much.
But I digress.
If the Metroid style appeals to you, Aria of Sorrow or Dawn of Sorrow would be good choices. I never recommend Symphony anymore if only because the hyperbole I spew out constantly for it seems to ruin other people's enjoyment of the game.
