For those of you paying attention, we would like to thank you for bearing with us in this period of restructuring and reinforcement. The purpose of this topic is to inform you, the user, about staff decisions involving the forum, recent events, and conflicts. Hopefully we will be successful in this regard.

A summary of our decisions in the recent 5Bass v. SaltyKracka flame war will serve as the pilot post for this topic. Last Sunday, Bass and Salty were both suspended for their participation in a site-wide argument. We placed each user in Purgatory one at a time to inform them why they had been suspended and what part of their behavior they would be expected to change. Salty was first, and we reminded him that he is a troll and that he should not be surprised to be in this situation. He didn't appear to be. We then issued him a sort of last warning saying he could expect big trouble if he did not cease trolling in the future. Next we brought Bass in and explained to her that she cannot loose her frustrations upon other users as a means to blow of steam because flaming is of course against the rules. If she has problems with another user, she needs to PM a staff member so that we can deal with it. Once these things were made expressly clear to her, we released her from suspension because this is her first major offense. Salty will be released later tonight or early tomorrow morning. The bottom line in our decision making is that both users were at fault.

The larger impact of this flame war is that it has caused us to redefine and reemphasize what we consider trolling and flaming.

From now on, we will be much more in tune with how we approach moderating these two offenses. The fault is ours for being too lenient with our own rules. We want to make clear that any sort of negative and derogatory remarks aimed at any aspect of another users life beyond the internet, whether it be someone's family, friends, or their personal circumstances, will be moderated as trolling. If it becomes clear that you are doing nothing but antagonize another user for your own enjoyment, you will be moderated for trolling. We understand that some people like to do this in jest. If we are unsure whether a disagreement between you and another user is serious or not, we will likely PM one or both of you to make sure. Blatantly hurtful or offensive insults directed at another user constitutes flaming and will be moderated. Again, we know there is a difference between playfully and purposefully insulting someone, so we might PM you to make sure we understand the situation. It is because of these definitions that we ruled both Bass and Salty at equal fault in the above conflict.

One of the most important aspects of moderation that we have let fall by the wayside is user reports. If you see any posts that you think might be flaming, trolling, or any other behavior that violates site rules, PM a staff member. One of us is almost always on. By letting us know, we can deal with the issue that much quicker. For clarification, PM a staff member. The "Report to Administrator" button is functionally useless. That sends an email to us. We are know different than you; most of our email addresses are junk ones made for the purpose of registering for random things around the internet, so they are rarely checked. A PM is a flashing, red, in-our-face way of saying "Look at this." It is your best bet in ensuring this forum is well moderated.

This concludes what should be the first of many posts that keep you updated on what goes on behind the scenes. As always, if you have any other questions feel free to contact a staff member and they will assist you.
