would you like to take my place at a wedding next weekend that i don't want to go to

Off the top of your head, is there any game soundtrack that you would listen to or do listen to regularly? Any film soundtrack?

how are you

i'm eh. Taking a summer class that's only a month long so I'm gonna have a stupid amount of schoolwork crammed into a short period, and I have to work too, and I'm going to need far more money than I can possibly get by the end of the month so I kinda wish I could just go into a fugue state for a month or two.

is there an open bar

I like the Scott Pilgrim game soundtrack, but I haven't played it I just love Anamanaguchi. Honestly I don't play enough videogames to be able to think of anything other than that.

As for film, nothing that I listen to regularly, but I do really love Suspiria's soundtrack, and City of the Living Dead's. Italian Horror in general has amazing music. Anything Ennio Morricone is amazing. I'm fond of Jon Brion (Magnolia, Eternal Sunshine) when I wanna be sad. The Third Man has an amazing and amazingly unique zither score. That's about all I can think of right now.

Do you still listen Soil and "Pimp" Sessions ever? I have no reason for asking other than they came on shuffle while I was out getting lunch just now.

Honestly not really. It's not that I don't still like them, although I don't like them as much as I used to. They're just pretty low on the hierarchy of what I listen to, and the excitement of discovering them faded. They're one of those honeymoon bands where I love them at first, but then the magic goes away and I move on.

What about Evil Dead 2 makes it your favorite horror film?

To use a pretentious term, I think it's pretty much "pure cinema". It's not concerned with literary things like depth of theme or characterization; its only object is to thrill the audience through purely cinematic means like editing and camera movement. And it uses every technique in the book to achieve this. And it dials everything up to 11. So it's basically a funhouse of ridiculous, swooping camera moves and crazy effects. It's completely relentless throughout the entire run-time. There's not a moment without some kind of dutch angle or POV shot or dolly move etc. To illustrate, in the scene where his hand gets possessed and it's dragging itself toward a knife on the ground, it cuts to a shot of its POV with the camera emulating its start-stop movements. This isn't necessary, but it adds character. The wide-angle lens used exaggerates and dynamizes the movement in a way that adds so much significance, not to mention it's just funny that a hand has a POV shot. Things like this are always happening. Sam Raimi constantly throws in cinematic touches that enliven the experience so much. He gets a ton of mileage out of one tiny location just from the wealth of different ways that he shoots it. Also the movie is funny in a way that never crosses over into parody. He organically finds the humor in things that are nevertheless grotesque and horrifying. He covers the whole spectrum of emotion effortlessly, and I think he does it by showing it all at the same time. The crazy laughing scene is horrifying, sad, joyful, and funny all at once. Overall I think it's not only the best horror movie of all time, but one of the best movies period, because it's pretty much the Platonic ideal of a movie. Not even Spielberg has ever matched the sheer cinematic exuberance on display in Evil Dead 2.

Definitely watch Kuroneko soon. It's super atmospheric and dreamlike, and pretty poignant on a level horror usually isn't.

MONTHS LATER

I finally got around to watching it and I dig it. Super moody and effective stuff.
