Thor only used his lightning powers a couple of times in his own movie too. Maybe they just don't want him to seem too far above the other Avengers, like how they've yet to mantion that the Hulk's strength is basically limitless if he's angry enough.

Thor could have Godblasted the entire army out and **** but then there wouldn't be the last third of the movie. Its like in the comics when he says he goes 1/3rd against mortals at all times because he doesn't want to crush their skulls in.
