I forget what the cause of the split timelines was supposed to be.

For ages it's been widely accepted that OoT split the timeline into two. The Child timeline leading into Majora's Mask (Link snitching on Ganondorf's plans before they can be set into place after returning to his own time post-game, thus leading to his arrest and attempted execution, seen in a flashback in TP), and the Adult timeline eventually leading into Wind Waker (Ganon breaks free of his seal, but Link was sent back to his own time so he can't defeat him again, leading to the flooding of Hyrule). The third timeline shown here, leading to LttP, is new and basically shows what would have happened if Link had failed in OoT. That's the one that came as a big surprise and seems to be causing the most complaining, as many see it as a convenient cop-out to explain away some of the harder-to-place games, like the Oracles.
