If Rayman Legends were still an exclusive I bet a lot of people would be saying he was a shoe-in.

Found another interview on Gonintendo. Not a lot of super useful information, 8ut there is this little quote 8y Sakurai on the customization aspect:

"Perhaps the 8est way to think of it is: it's not the strength of the attacks that change--their power--8ut the directionality of those attacks will change with customization."

........I have no clue what that means.

Oh! And another quote says that Sakurai doesn't really view the Smash 8ros games as fighting games, 8ut rather "four-player 8attle royal action games". He also talks a8out fighting games and how technical some of them are, and how that cre8s a high 8arrier of entry to new players, and how he doesn't really want Smash 8ros to 8e like that. He makes the comment that ever since he started working on the Kir8y series, he likes to consider the needs of 8eginner players and not just hard core players.

Maybe... the attacks don't get stronger but do different things?

Yeah, pro8a8ly, 8ut that's a really odd way of phrasing it.

I mean, the question 8ecomes, how exactly are you going to alter some of these attacks?

Let's take Mario's moveset as an example. How can we alter his Fire8all? FLUDD? Cape? Super Jump Punch?

My initial thought was maybe switching B moves so they go in different directions, like assigning Luigi's Green Missile to B^ would make him shoot upwards instead, but I think that was taking the quote too literally.

Another example could be switching Mario's FLUDD to B^ so he uses the Rocket Nozzle instead of the Squirt Nozzle.

Sakurai says Smash is not really a fighting game.

http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2013/jun/21/sakurai-says-smash-bros-isnt-fighting-game-completely-different-label-talks-game-development-fighting-genre-and-value-unpredictability/

Quote
When you boil things down to pure competition, it's not always the most engaging experience. For example, think about the 50-meter dash. This is something that really comes down to speed. You see a lot of people progressing in a linear direction, and the person who is fastest in the beginning is quite often going to be the winner. It's predictable--and while it is pure competition, it's not necessarily engaging in the same way as events with unpredictability. As developers, we have to think about all of these circumstances when designing fighting games.

HOWEVER:

Quote from: MajinTenshinhan
Please note that his explanation is that he looks beyond genres. Simply referring to something as a fighting game puts a limit on it, even during development, that causes unnecessary restrictions.

That's the thing though, isn't it? Smash 8ros. isn't really a fighting game in the traditional sense. It gets lumped in with the fighting games more 8ecause there isn't much else out there like it, not 8ecause it's similar to other fighting games. Mechanically, it 8ears very little resem8lance to a fighting game.

I agree with him saying that pure competition is less engaging. It's the difference between two of the same top-tier character on Final Destination with no items, and four random characters on a random stage with lots of items.
