tales has always had some darker elements in the background -- like, you'd prolly have more trouble counting the games that don't have genocide of some sort going on. of course, every game kinda has the weird thing going where some sick or tragic **** might happen towards the side, but the characters are always consummately goofy, quirky and anime and it ends up producing this really weird, almost uncomfortable amount of dissonance between the cast and some of the stuff they do or get involved in.

Symphonia gives you a pretty decent look at systemic racism *shrug*

And also creepy human experimentation, slavery, massacres, generations of manipulation...

Honestly, Symphonia is a pretty dark once you look past the visuals and the characters personalities. I mean, it's still a shounen at heart, but the world it's set in isn't exactly the brightest vision of humanity out there.

abyss was pretty creepy in regards to the entire replica thing and how they factored into the main villain's plans. of course, that game had a super quirky party who always seemed completely at odds with how gross and dark that world is, but considering that every party member was some different variety of a complete asshole from the rest, i guess that wasn't the weirdest bit to it.

vesperia had some amazingly awful, moustache twirling villains like the guy who fed tons of people, including children, to the beasts in his dungeon for fun. even the token lame, super-effeminate, liam o'brien-voiced villain was pretty amazingly awful. that one was kind of weird in how dour and dark its protagonist was, yet how goofy and quirky literally everyone else in the party was (god damn loli pirate)

Abyss is pretty great. I love the way the story is presented through the main character's perspective. Though it's not a good game to start with because the protagonist is really grating, especially to begin with. Jade Curtiss might be the top tales character ever.

I can't remember a lot about Legendia right now, but I do remember that it involved a WMD that was fueled by people and people trying to instigate wars by using it.

I need to replay some of these games and just write down everything terrible that happens in them...

I actually thought of replaying FF7 while taking notes/doing some sort of live commentary to see if keeping track of everything would improve my enjoyment of the game

Maybe taking notes would help my enjoyment of RPGs

If you truly believe it will help you enjoy the games, then you should go ahead and do it. I'm of the opinion it'll take a lot of time and that breaking the flow of the game for the sake of writing things down will work in the opposite direction, but I'm not you.

You do make a fair point, but I practically do it already yelling unsolicited commentary to the guys on the lounge chat

Got Evoland 2 from the steam sale this weekend. Pretty good game with a fun gimmick (if you go into it knowing what that is)

Story's not bad, even if it's pretty much a copy of Chrono Trigger, and I enjoyed the characters.

The main negative thing I'd have to say about it is the references can get a little out of hand sometimes
