"The Evil Within" came out a few weeks ago. As a huge fan of survival horror, I enjoyed it pretty thoroughly, it felt like a cross between Dead Space 1, Silent Hill 2 and RE4. Currently I'm having fun with New Game+ and all the unlockable stuff.

Floyd is the devil.
I SERIOUSLY DREAMT OF FLOYD BEING A KILLER CYBORG WHO RAN 10 TIMES FASTER THAN ANY NORMAL HUMAN, AND THEN KILLED MM, TURNED FEMALE, WENT AFTER ME, AND I DROPPED FROM THE SKYSCRAPER! IT HURTED, BUT I AWAKE CALMLY, THINKING I WOULDN'T SEE YOU AGAIN.

Everything I've heard suggests it's a poorly-designed RE4 rehash.

During the later chapters of the game, it gets really heavy with RE4 channeling, but other than that, it was more horror oriented. Kinda makes me sad though, I was hoping TEW was going to be straight up survival horror, but they kinda fu cked with it towards the end and made it action-y.

I was hoping it'd be...yaknow...actually scary. Haha
Sometimes modern horror games bum me out. I have yet to play a game that can make me feel the terror I felt when I first played SH/SH2/3, or RE0/1/2/3/CV. It's starting to feel like survival horror is a dying genre.

Did you play Outlast? If so, thoughts? If not, find it and play it.
That game was always a bit jarring for me. However, games like Amnesia didn't really bother me.
Now Silent Hills is something I'm looking forward to. After playing P.T., I think that was the most terrified I've ever been with a game and it was just a demo.

Outlast was a nice change of pace. Over the summer I decided to pick up all the Penumbra games since steam had them super cheap. After I finished those, I moved on the the Amnesia games. Combat-free horror games are always a nice change of pace. As for Silent Hills P.T., that restored my hope for the Silent Hills, if they keep the pace of the demo, I think it'll turn out fine.

My coworker said that this game caused her to lose hope in videogames... I kinda get the feeling it's probably not that bad.

It's a solid title. It's really more like 75% horror and 25% action. It's not as smooth as I wanted it to be, but I still really enjoyed it.

Outlast was a good game from the perspective of atmosphere and an enticing story, though to be honest I'm a sucker for anything set in an asylum. Both that and Amnesia did a great job at creating truly troubling atmospheres, the problem was Amnesia felt clunky and I never really felt threatened. I actually made it through the game without ever seeing a monster until the water part. I've been looking at the Evil Within, and it looks amazing, but I'm worried about the reports of a lackluster ending. Don't get me wrong, endings are always hard but thats not really an excuse for being unable to explain certain story elements.

Not gonna lie, the ending is kind of lame. They're pretty much doing the whole, "make a shitty ending, but announced multiple planned DLCs for the campaign to further flesh it out" nonsense.
