Also noted the lack of a fog door before the Cleric Beast. Fog filled the arch after I walked through it, but I can imagine a scenario where I walk into the boss fight and am caught totally offguard. Just like if I had taken a few more steps, I probably would have walked into the next boss fight, too. So are fog doors not a thing in this game?

You won't see them until you fight the boss once, but for the most part the areas are less surprising than the Cleric Beast's initial "just pop out of nowhere" thing.

I SERIOUSLY DREAMT OF FLOYD BEING A KILLER CYBORG WHO RAN 10 TIMES FASTER THAN ANY NORMAL HUMAN, AND THEN KILLED MM, TURNED FEMALE, WENT AFTER ME, AND I DROPPED FROM THE SKYSCRAPER! IT HURTED, BUT I AWAKE CALMLY, THINKING I WOULDN'T SEE YOU AGAIN.

Oh ok.

I figure the notes on the ground will probably tip me off anyway.

I killed Gascoigne on my third try. Got him to beast mode both times before that, but just got backed into a corner and overwhelmed. Think on my successful attempt I used the music box three times. Not sure if not using it is one of those indicators of manliness, but I don't really care. I also staggered him once with my gun (when I remembered that was a thing - funny how he makes you forget), but couldn't figure out how to do any visceral attacks on him. Didn't really matter in the end.

My hands are still shaking.

Also, there was nothing down that hole behind the pig.

Oh and I found a hunter lady who gave me some stuff and a gesture, but I almost ruined it because I put my controller down and accidentally shot in her direction. Luckily it didn't hit her.

Gascoigne is really intense. Usually those sorts of fights are the most intense.

also fuck the manliness nonsense, use whatever means necessary to kill a boss. I think the music box only works once, but it's there for a reason.

Are you talking about the lady with the plague doctor mask?

The box definitely made him freak out and stagger three times including once in beast mode. I made sure I had the big tomb at least partially between me and him when I used it though, 'cause I don't see a way to use it without taking a hit otherwise.

I also found the mother's brooch, so I guess now I'll go back and give this little girl some bad news.

And yes, that lady.

Interesting, maybe they patched it then. When I used it in his beast mode, I tried to get behind him to get a backstab. That was the only time I ever really backstabbed a boss.

Eileen's quest is great. Be prepared for the most difficult Souls NPC fight if you continue her questline though. Bloody Crow of Cainhurst can be a jerk.

Gascoigne's daughter's quest is also neat.

Ohh. Well she won't say anything to me other than go hunt, though I guess now I should go back and talk to her that I've killed Gascoigne and see if she says anything different.

Also the daughter is only crying now and won't talk to me, so I guess I come back later?

And is there more I can do with Iosefka?

Freaking souls games and their poor indication of when to advance stuff.

Just keep talking to the NPCs at different points in the game. However, some of them, like Eileen, may show up in different areas of the game. I agree, these games aren't very good at directing you to where you need to go for NPC sidequests. I generally just looked shit up online.

Hard to do that without spoiling myself, but oh well.

I've mostly been leveling Strength, Vitality, and Stamina. At what point is it a good idea to start investing in other stats like bloodtinge? I guess as I find weapons that would require that?

Bloodtinge is good for guns I think. And the Chikage, which is a katana. I didn't invest any points into it at all, but you can make a bloodtinge build and mix it with some other stats. Arcane is...well kind of like Intelligence I guess. You get some special attacks later on that are like magic, but I feel like it takes a while to get the good stuff.

I dunno, I think I just did those three stats exclusively my first time lol. I didn't really understood what bloodtinge and arcane were all about at the time.

also, some weapons scale with arcane. keep a lookout for them as they show up in the messenger bath and see what their scaling is
