New today:

Jigglypuff
Peach
Lucina
Wario
Ike
Pokemon Trainer
Sanic
Lil Mac
Shulk
Ryu
Ridley
Simon

Simon is super fun. I like how you can entrap people with his different projectiles and then get the whip in there. His down-tilt is also great for closing gaps.

I got to unlock Ridley with Samus, so that was neat. He's pretty cool, but I've obviously gotta work out the spacing for his attacks to get the most out of them.

I actually kinda like the idea of getting the hang of Ryu. Been mostly leaning on Samus and Falcon otherwise, in addition to the other two I mentioned.

Also Isabelle is broken and I can't beat her. Have tried twice.

Lost to Lucario, too, and the door hasn't appeared for me to rematch yet.

Unlocked the more handsome Belmont today, as well as

Luigi
Daisy
Falco
Roy
Diddy
Lucas
King Dedede
Lucario

and finally, after four rematches

Isabelle

That puts me at 43 total, which is a bit more than half the cast at this point. Not bad for a weekend in which this wasn't the only game I played.

I've been doing this thing where I go through and just play every stage to both refamiliarize myself with them as well as get my bearings on the ones I've never played before. When I get to walk-off stages, I like to play characters with worse-than-average recovery. So when I got to the Wii Fit Trainer stage, I figured I would give Ryu a workout. After the match

CHALLENGER APPROACHING

it is of course my dude, Meta Knight, whose stage is not one I would play Ryu on

In addition to him, I've also got R.O.B. and I think someone I'm forgetting waiting for rematches. It feels like they're getting harder, either that or the characters have been adjusted in ways that I don't account for when fighting them.

The one I forgot was Pichu, which maybe I shouldn't admit, but oh well.

Picked up it, R.O.B., Meta Knight, Snake, and Toon Link before work/during lunch break (I'm working from home today because snow).

Encountered Chrom, but I got greedy and was punished for it.

Chrom is still being a huge bastard. Think I need to go heavy against him.

Managed to pick up

Dr. Mario, Ganondorf, Olimar, Pac-Man, Bowser Jr., and Bayonetta over the course of the evening, though.

I was finally doing some more World of Light and I think I need to learn to read the UI better. This one fight, Sakura, where you're up against Isabelle and Corrin and they're perpetually healing took me probably 10+ tries. Elsewhere on the board, I came across ZSS with the Boss's spirit, and noticed the battle was rated "Legend." I'll come back to that later (especially since I want to fight her as Snake).

Apparently unlocks are deterministic if you go through Classic mode.

At this point, I think I am only missing

Palutena
Robin
Wolf*
Mewtwo
Greninja
Cloud
Duck Hunt
Ken

and the Mii Fighters, but honestly who cares about them.

* encountered but didn't win

I got Dark Samus finally. She's pretty swag.

Also played as Mega Man for a match or two. He's the kind of quirky that I feel is terrible by default but I want to make him work and infuriate people.

I got caught up in World of Light last night after not really feeling it the first several times I played it. I was actually enjoying taking on some of the harder spirits. I'm still not messing around with the 4-star ones, but some of the 3-stars are actually beatable even with my spirits not leveled.

The Sigma fight is a stamina battle against a Ganondorf with a beam saber, and his AI is smart enough that you can't just repeatedly counter him or really gimp him in any way. I tried all kinds of cheesy tactics and eventually just had to get really aggressive as Kirby to kind of keep him staggered. That let me unlock Mega Man a lot sooner than I probably would have.

The Metal Gear Rex fight was similar except it was two giant metal R.O.B.'s that start with the submarine gun, and that let me unlock Snake. So now I have two fun characters to use compared to the half dozen or so that I had but wasn't really feeling.

Galleom was pretty hard, but once I learned what range to punish all of his attacks at, it didn't take too much longer to beat him.

This really is just the Event Match fights that I remember liking so much in Melee but spread out on a big map. The RPG stuff is goofy but it's not that hard to get the hang of.

Cleared out the sky temple and the molten castle dungeons. Flavor of the day was Snake after mostly using Mega Man through the weekend. I unlocked Samus finally so I've got a fairly decent stable of characters I like to rotate through now.

There sure are a lot of spirits that need rescuing, though.

The other shoe has dropped in World of Light, so I guess I'm slightly more than halfway done with that.

I'm also having a friend come over to play tomorrow night, so I'll finally get to see how trash I am at this game in these early days.

Also I picked up Castlevania Requiem, so that's now on the figurative shelf.
